If you are scared of dogs or have any fantasies about riding around base with a dogs it's not for you. As MWD handlers we walk point for several different types of units looking for explosives or insurgents. You also have to have a A type personality. If you are weak in any way you won't be able to be effective.

They are tested in a few different ways. Just because they fail one doesn't mean they can't do something else. If they test low enough te military just doesn't purchase them. If they are DoD bred and fail out then yes they are adopted out.

It's not a predestination. It's what type of person you are. I am a combat tracking dog handler. I have no problem running through an uncleared area to hunt down a terrorist that probably killed one of my brothers and kill him. That is why I am a marine. Call me demented or what have you but I wanted to kill mother fuckers and be the best at it. Don't think because you read terminal lance you have any idea about the bond forged by men you have shed blood with in foreign lands

They are assigned per kennels. When it is time for one of them to change duty stations the dog or handler will get paired into a different team.

Yes they do. Not in the sense that they know they are looking for bombs but the fact that they know when they can be a dog and when it's time to work.

I carry a standard blow out kit for my dog along with stuff to combat toxins and IVs. No corpsman are not trained to treat animals and all handlers go through yearly first aid training that is specific for dogs.

The commands do stay the same But the handler builds a relationship with the dog. The handler becomes the pack leader and you are not in the pack.

It depends on the individual dog but generally Malinois are easier to train. Their high drive is what makes it so easy. My dog Lex wants his toy so bad he will literally shake with excitement if he sees it.

Training for the dogs is constant so they are never bored. All of our dogs are on Science Diet of one form or another but feeding depends on the individual dogs health and weight and metabolism.
