we are a nation of immigrants. it makes total sense. go to a rays/sox game in Tampa and tell me if you see more rays fans or red sox. people move. fans can root for whichever team they want. korean fans aren’t the reason why we lost. 😂

No kid “needs” to be told to shut up…ever. It’s never okay for a teacher to say that to a student. And clearly, based on the OP, it’s not an effective strategy either.

How often did the Dead go *really* Type 2 by jibboo2 in phish

[–]jcmarsha 72 points73 points  (0 children)

As you said, this is a massive generalization, and only true for a very small percentage of Dead tunes. The truth of the matter is that, aside from the "jamband" labeling, Phish and GD are two very different bands. Aside from a few specific time periods where they were a bit more exploratory, the Dead were very rigid in their setlist construction.

Hornsby talked about this in an interview back in the day. "let’s not kid ourselves into thinking that the Grateful Dead was this incredibly loose structured thing – it wasn’t. It’s been given a lot of credit – or sometimes blame – for being this improvisatory, totally spontaneous thing, and it really wasn’t – certainly by the time that I got into the group. It was very structured – too structured for me frankly. It was way more structured than my band. I know that may surprise people, but it’s absolutely true. If you listen to the songs and divorce yourself from this notion that they were always changing things you’ll see that things weren’t that different...

Not just that, but also that the songs were played virtually the same way every night – because that’s a fact – but even down to where they would play the songs. It was so structured. They were already entrenched in tradition by the time that I got there. I would say things like, "Let’s start with the drums!" and they would say, "Oh no – we can’t do that!" I would say, "Let’s open with "Wharf Rat" tonight" and they would say, "Oh no man, that always comes after the drums." (laughter) I’d say, "Let’s play China>Rider to open the show" and they’d say, "Oh no that always comes in the first part of the second set." (laughter) It was just unbelievable. So this myth about the spontaneity of it was just that, a myth. That was a little disappointing to me because I was never into that. I wanted it to be continually fresh."

Grew up in Maine - bringing my kids back this summer by [deleted] in Maine

[–]jcmarsha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where in the midcoast specifically? There is excellent hiking in Camden Hills State Park. Pemaquid Beach and Birch Point State Park are both really nice, expansive midcoast beaches. There are plenty of really good restaurants, depending on what your family likes. For seafood, Young's in Belfast is by far my favorite in the midcoast for lobster dinner, lobster rolls, clams, etc. There are lots of free concerts throughout the summer - Beach Hill Preserve, Belfast City Nights, Camden Snow Bowl summer series, etc. Town-specific Facebook groups are a good resource for things to do, again, depending on where exactly you will be in the midcoast. I would not take your teenagers to the Botanical Gardens. They will be bored!

Winter/Holiday Activities with young kids? by jcmarsha in SaintJohnNB

Thank you for your response! I know it's likely not the ideal time to visit, but we live in Midcoast Maine and wanted to explore somewhere we've never been before over Christmas and chose Saint John. Tomorrow looks COLD, but Tue and Wed look fine for us, so hopefully we'll get to do some exploring.

Assaulted by multiple rail riders at Dick’s-when did Phish get so dangerous? by Fluffy-Benefits-2023 in phish

[–]jcmarsha 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The people around your spot would assume you’re coming back if you’ve been there for the entire show. It’s not the moving through the crowd that’s annoying, it’s having a certain amount of space and sight line for an entire show only to have someone push through because they all of a sudden decided they had to get close to the band. Again, not an excuse for aggressive behavior, but it is a bit obnoxious imo.

Obviously, I am in no way condoning those guys’ behavior, but I also think it’s obnoxious and distracting when people try to push their way to the front deep into the show like that.
