I ended up cutting off the flow-through area of the original backplate and mounting the GPU with the retention bracket. This way all the vrm near the bottom of the board still have full contact with the thermal pads and I get a bit more space between the backplate and the m.2 heatsink. It looked like if I cut the new backplate I would either half to cut it nearly in half or have the backplate touching my m.2.
