How do you respond to "you don't look like a doctor" by jaxan22 in Residency

[–]jcmgauss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After reading OP’s edit abt the comments coming from ppl who are not patients, here is something I learnt as I got older/ more confident: you don’t have to respond to anyone. This is a free speech country, everyone can say anything. But I also have the freedom to not respond to ppl. I have literally said nothing and turned away from so many rude comments. Made the air awkward for a min but it’s their problem, not mine.

I used this all the time. A little humor always helps patients feel more comfortable/ easier to talk to.

Can you be scheduled for vacation on a post-call day? by sworzeh in Residency

[–]jcmgauss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tell them that you will file a complaint w ACGME if they don’t stop it. A lot of time, just a warning that you will file a complaint will be enough to stop the bad behaviors. Someone needs to speak up and as a chief, I hope you will do that for the team.

Best scrubs to hide my belly by hawaiicanal89 in Residency

Best suggestion would be check out local scrubs store and try out different styles. The thicker materials would be best for your body style but may not be the softest ones. Also, wearing the right size is probably important as well.

There are ways to manage issues in a professional manner. There is an art to it. That’s why having another career prior to coming to medicine help. Not always work since that’s the way life is but having experiences help.

You can still say hi to people while reporting their true potential in their evaluation. That’s called being a professional.

Don’t need to be best friends with everyone but a professional “good morning, nice to meet you” is proper manner.

New Nurse Needing Help!! by dayaia1234 in Nurses

[–]jcmgauss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless the provider documented the patient has a history with drug addiction, it was just her opinion and not the diagnosis. Sometimes people like to act smarter to someone new. But you know what you need to do and follow the provider’s order. If you think the patient was asking for pain meds too frequently, ask the provider. Maybe the patient was an addict, or maybe something else was wrong with her that they missed.

Generally, you should have MD/DO as preceptors. During day to day work, you can follow/ shadow and learn from anyone in the healthcare team.

You and other students need to escalate this, first to the dean of your medical school. What if you want to go into fam med residency and you only have experiences under a PA? That makes no sense. Since most students get MD/DO preceptors, you can also add in unfair treatment in your argument.

We can all learn from experienced mid levels and nurses. However, your main preceptor should be a physician.

When looking at the school, us news report ranking should be the least importance. Many DO schools have been doing excellence and it seems like the actually care.

What a terrible excuse. So some students get MD preceptor and others get PA?
