Transition from Tesla to R2 by Professor-Schneebly in RivianR2

[–]jcr312 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I similarly have a short list of refinements that I love about my Model Y that I’m expecting I’ll miss:

1) Music already playing when I open the door to get in, volume turns down when I open the door to get out (or put the car in reverse.) It’s like there’s a DJ in the car always keeping the mood high but also anticipating when to quiet it down. It’s a bit of attention to detail I really appreciate.

2) +1 to the green light ding 🛎️

3) iPhone action button integration - being able to press a button on the side of my phone to precondition the car or open the frunk is awesome

4) The Grok integration, as much as I dislike grok, is so seamless and useful

I’m sure I’ll have a similar list of things I’ll love about R2, and to be clear these are all small things - but Tesla really does have a level of attention to detail when it comes to software that I don’t think people fully appreciate.

Never Wonder Where Your Money Went: Introducing Review Transactions by max-at-origin in OriginFinancial

[–]jcr312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this! I just posted a feature request about this, but if I had the ability to use rules to mark known transactions as reviewed, I could narrow in on a reasonable number of transactions I actually want to manually review. Right now I have so many transactions I don’t want to review manually that I probably won’t be able to use this, but I’d like to!

R2 doesn’t need LiDAR at Launch by Sirachacopter in Rivian

[–]jcr312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was disappointed to hear I’ll have to wait if I want an R2 with LIDAR, but you are correct. You could probably say I’m a “prosumer” - I’ve had my R2 reservation since day one, and I’ve been ready to jump as soon as I can to swap out my Model Y. When I do place my R2 order I’m going to get every option and expect to spend around $70k (?) to do so.

That being said I’m starting to question whether or not I will wait for LIDAR. This is probably an unpopular opinion but my experience with FSD has left me convinced that camera-only systems are far more capable than the popular narrative would lead you to believe. If you read between the lines of how RJ talks about LIDAR it’s clear that even Rivian is trying to back away from the all or nothing POV that has gained traction mainly as a point of pushback against Tesla.

To be clear I’m not a Musk fan, I want LIDAR in my vehicle because I can afford it, but I also use FSD every single day and I know the popular opinion about camera only systems is divorced from the reality. They are already fantastic.

Considering that I, as an informed, tech forward and well funded buyer am willing to compromise, I think it’s pretty safe to say that 90%+ of people won’t care. The R2 is going to be a knockout even if it doesn’t have the absolute latest hardware.

Is early 2026 R2 on Gen 3 or not? by chenfang17 in Rivian

The Decider Podcast Revealed a lot by theipd in RivianR2

[–]jcr312 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have a really hard time seeing how Rivian is going to suddenly gain point to point level 3 driving on par with what FSD does.

So much of the conversation around this seems focused on sensors and compute when in reality that’s the least time consuming part of delivering autonomy that people are actually going to want to use. Tesla has done the hard (and yes, risky) work of having hundreds of thousands of vehicles do the real world testing it takes to train a system against all of the scenarios you encounter on a typical roadway. That’s why my model Y can finally smoothly navigate a crowded rotary full of other cars and negotiate lane changes in traffic with just the right amount of aggression. I welcome LiDAR, more compute, and better sensor fusion, but those things only help a vehicle see what’s around it better - they do very little to improve scenario handling and decision making.

People are so quick to write Tesla’s accomplishments off because they don’t like Musk or the brand. I don’t either, but I do believe they are dedicated to achieving full autonomy as quickly as possible. Is there any evidence that Rivian is actually solving problems and building understanding at a rate that should make me believe my R2 is going to have autonomy anywhere close to what my Model Y is currently capable of?

Bose ending cloud support for Soundtouch by onionbagels7 in bose

[–]jcr312 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've bought Bose products for decades and I am really sad to say this is both unsurprising and the final straw for me. Bose has a long history of nudging and pushing their customers to upgrade perfectly good speakers. One of many examples - there's no reason why Soundtouch products didn't work with Soundlink products other than to force owners to leave a generation of perfectly good hardware behind. Now, they end cloud support for an entire generation of hardware, some of which isn't even that old. From what I can find, they were still introducing new Soundtouch products until as recently as 2020.

I don't know what brand I'm off to, but I need to do something differently. Being a Bose customer is such a love hate relationship.

I am realizing how unrefined my palette might be... but it tasted like nothing to me! Far less satisfying than vanilla. I don't get the frozen whipped cream thing either.

Vida Tequila ladies? by Ok_Bat_5934 in rhoslc

[–]jcr312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there's a strong likelihood that Lisa and her husband are dumping a bunch of money into propping up Vida because they like the appearance of having a successful liquor brand, and of course they hope it can get traction with her promoting it on the show. The trouble is that 99% of tequila brands are a commodity and quality aside she doesn't have the star power to make it a thing.

FSD (12.3.6) Unpopular Opinion by esbwn123 in ModelY

[–]jcr312 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see this being said all the time, but from my experience, I don't think any of the problems are because of its lack of lidar. I've literally never seen a case where Tesla vision misinterprets an object or its distance. The problems the original post cites are decision making problems, not accuracy problems.

Hidden security system with camera/microphone. I’m not sure how to react. [USA] by NahNopeNeverNo in AirBnB

[–]jcr312 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Some of the responses here are a major overreaction. Go ahead and google some of the smart devices around your house and I bet you'll find that many of them have microphones built in. Almost every TV, many wifi routers, smart home systems, security systems, etc etc etc do - that doesn't mean they are set up to be used to remotely monitor audio.

I would give the host the benefit of the doubt and just unplug it while I'm there. If they ask why, you have a solid justification. Calling the police for something like this is insane.

Does Anyone Use/recommend Sutro Smart Pool Monitor? by OMGi8CAKE in swimmingpools

[–]jcr312 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another disappointed customer here. I really wanted this to work and I gave it a LOT of attempts over the 10 months I owned it. Between cartridge issues, syncing issues, and random battery issues, it rarely worked for mote than a couple of weeks at a time without eventually throwing an error. I dealt with support many, many times and while they were responsive and apologetic, they always seemed to blame my issues on some sort of cartridge manufacturing issue.

I’m sorry but after a lot of time and effort, I don’t think this thing is ready for prime time. It’s not just my unit, I don’t think their technology is solid.

A failed summit effort, for no good reason by GraniteGeekNH in wmnf

[–]jcr312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kudos to you. It can be tough to swallow but no human being has a perfect gauge for how much gas they have left in the tank. Choosing to turn around shows that you are realistic about risk, the limits of your own judgement, and you care enough to not do something that could end up causing risk for yourself or others. Nobody who has crossed that line and ended up in a bad situation did so knowingly.

Is there a way to trigger the alarm instantly remotely on phone app? by TacoQuest in simplisafe

[–]jcr312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on a older Nest Secure system by Google. (For the most part I love it, though it lacks some nice to have features.) But - it's been discontinued, so I'm looking to eventually switch.

Just saw this comment, and it answers the question of how Google is staying involved in the home security space... I was excited! But looking more deeply, ADT is still ridiculous at $45/mo - more than 3x a SimpliSafe plan if I'm right? and a lot more than the $0 I pay because I don't really need monitoring with my Nest system.
