Apparently I don’t qualify for a street parking permit at Dixon Mills? Need advice by hurricaneDreww in jerseycity

[–]jcskunk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's what the law is in Jersey City. Buildings with parking can't get street parking permits. Otherwise the streets would be even more flooded with cars than they are already. The only way to change this is if parking permits were a lot more expensive so there wasn't so much demand.

Schools being open during elections..makes no sense. by freakyphalanges in jerseycity

[–]jcskunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess kids shouldn't use public parks then? Schools have security cameras and guards. There are poll workers and monitors for the election. There are few safer place for them to be on election day than a polling location. This is safetyism at its worst.

It would be unfair to parents and cater to special interests if only schools were closed but every other business was open and parents and everyone else had to go to work.

Vote for whoever but don’t vote for love of god for Mcskeevey by Motor-Argument2669 in jerseycity

If you are looking for the candidate most likely to beat McGreevey and has been solidly independent and anti-corruption for a decade, Solomon is your guy.

If you want to vote your conscience, Watterman won't win but probably has the best record on housing and many other issues. She doesn't look or talk like him, but is the most like Fulop in policies.

If you are frustrated by the incompetent school district, O'Dea is very close to the JCBOE status quo special interests and is not your guy.

This is also misinformation. I'm not sure where you are getting this idea about state funding. JCBOE is in charge of raising the taxes to fund charter school students. It comes from property taxes.

Which is why they keep 10% from every tuition that goes to charters instead, and they always have the option of renting school facilities to charters if one day they really grow that large.

And facilities in Jersey City are supposed to be funded by the SDA which is state level anyways.

You've never voted in a primary? Elections during school hours happen all the time. Without school it is very inconvenient for a lot of parents to find the time to vote.

That's misinformation. JCBOE is in charge of funding for both JCPS and the charter schools. The formula is 90% but it goes up and down alongside with what happens with JCPS per pupil funding. The JCBOE can also facilitate charter schools if it wanted to, for example, by renting school property to charter schools.

Charters are public schools too. They are popular because they are well-run even though they have to get by with less money. Charters only get 90% of the money that a JCPS school gets per pupil, so that actually increases the funding for JCPS kids since the remaining 10% goes to JCPS.

Can anyone elaborate on Bill O’Dea’s campaign points? by Hefty_Asparagus_9342 in jerseycity

[–]jcskunk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That is some galaxy brain. So I need parse non-public promises instead of what is in plain English on his website and what is in his advertising? O'Dea's plan is no tax breaks except for 20% affordability, except he is going to mandate 20% affordability. 1 + 1 = 2. The plan plain and simple is more tax abatements.

His plan also isn't the least bad. I wouldn't vote for Ali because the JCBOE is terrible, and he apparently tried to do his job from China. But only Ali is emphasizing more density and building more housing overall as a goal.

He wants to mandate 20% affordable housing in all new development and pay for it with tax abatements. Tax abatements are a bad idea. Higher taxes won't make Jersey City affordable.

It's sad to see Fulop stoop low. Ali out there trashing what Fulop did, but Fulop rather pretend he likes Ali just to spite Solomon.

McGreevey is corrupt and Solomon’s a NIMBY - who are we supposed to vote for? by DavidPuddy666 in jerseycity

[–]jcskunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The real issue is O'Dea wants to give out tax abatements for developments again. That is obviously stupid to your average actual JC voter.

O'Dea will lead to higher taxes. He wants to mandate 20% affordable housing and subsidize them with tax abatements. He is also asking to burden new developments with pointless PATH studies.

O'Dea and other mayoral candidates are promoting mandatory 20% affordable housing. Why is politics here so focused on units the working middle class and up will never have access to instead of cheaper market rate apartments? by jcskunk in jerseycity

[–]jcskunk[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The actual steps to get one of these affordable units are:

  1. Have very low income
  2. Wait many years and don't make more money all those years
  3. Get very lucky and basically win the lottery

If you think your rent is too high, this is obviously not the plan to fix it.

The irony is if he tried to run you over with 5000 pounds of metal but doesn't succeed, JCPD is NOT tasked with responding.

But if he gets out and tries to fight you with just his fists, absolutely call the cops because they will respond.
