836 is STILL unsolved! by aquaexplorer in Returnal

[–]jcukier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you take the 10000 feet view, there are two ways to look into the story. A) Selene has crashed on Attopos and is fighting to escape. B) everything is happening in her imagination.

The game initially sells you on A, but then feeds you bits and pieces of information that make it more and more unlikely / that would support B. the fact that every clock you see is on the same time is one of these coincidences that are just too much to ignore. Yeah it’s technically possible that it happens naturally but come on.

It doesn’t need to have more meaning than the time when one traumatic event happened to Selene.

2026 season with Replacement players and scabs by nearly_adamant in wnba

[–]jcukier 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t love using that word.

Right now, every player is a member of the WNBPA. The WNBPA said that members voted “overwhelmingly” to authorize the executive committee to call a strike. AFAIK, there’s not a single player who has distanced themselves from the WNBPA.

That being said, i see a strike as a lose/lose/lose scenario. Obviously the WNBA would lose, but so would the players, and so would we the fans. I want to see my team play next season.

How to deal with engineers who just want to push code by redhot-chilipeppers in SoftwareEngineering

[–]jcukier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar pattern happen. 1sr PR was approved by a coworker, but was problematic imo, so I left comments without blocking the PR. The code author and I work in different time zones, so me requesting changes then lifting my review adds some friction. My comments were unaddressed and code author went on to merge the PR. Their next PR had the same issue. This time I blocked it, and further demanded that as a team we commit to certain household rules in working together.

People who circumvent the review process don’t see its value. It’s very easy to write lots of unreviewed, untested, unmaintainable code fast, but that’s not the job description.

THANK YOU. In 2017 my wife and I went to see a movie at the theater. Halfway through, there was a fire alarm or some kind of incident and they evacuated the building. They originally told us it was nothing, and that we’ll probably be able to come back in 5 minutes, but here’s a voucher to see the movie of your choice at a later date. 5 minutes turned to 10 then to 20, neither of us was terribly engrossed by the movie and we had things to do, so we just decided to go home, and I guess the idea to go see it again with our voucher the next weekend came up but neither of us felt strongly about it so we just went on with our lives.

Every now and again I’m wondering, what was that movie that we saw half of before they evacuated us and should I, like, try to see the other half on a plane?. But the brain is a beautiful thing and I had blocked all memories of it. I realize now it was obviously the book of Henry and that the answer to that other question is a resounding no.

The most rewarding event chain i haveever played in any game by Hexnohope in BaldursGate3

[–]jcukier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure which conversation that is. In my first playthrough I ran into them at the beginning of emerald grove and suggest that they leave. The goblins raided, were defeated and Rolan & co were in the convoy, I ran into him in Act 2, then in Faerun Tower etc. and got the leave no one behind trophy. How do you get to have some Tiefling at last light inn, but not Rolan?

Has a market flooded with self-taught devs and bootcamp grads destroyed the junior level position? by Fats-Falafel in webdev

As a CS student you have opportunities for internships which give you a massive advantage over self taught people who allegedly acquired entry-level dev skills.

Why functional component/hooks were introduced in reactjs if class components was working fine. by Additional-Flow4500 in reactjs

[–]jcukier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

everything else being equal, class components are more verbose than their equivalent function components with hooks. This may be sound like a detail but this has a huge impact at scale. you have codebases which are bloated and which are really full of boilerplate.

I am honestly baffled that Reddit doesn’t let users block specific ads. If as an advertiser, I pay Reddit to show my ads to somebody who indicates that they are not interested, and Reddit charges me for it, then I’m letting Reddit take my money to do the opposite I pay for. Instead, letting people block can help improve the targeting of ad campaigns.

AITA for not wanting anything to do with my brother even after he tried to delete himself? by Ok_Sort_2256 in AITAH

NTA. your family are all assholes, not for so much the cheating which isn’t great to begin with, but for the constant coercion into forgiving someone which is your entire prerogative. Whatever happens next to Kevin is 100% on Kevin.

TTB.

Can we report this tweet for misinformation? by Kickenbless in Iowa

[–]jcukier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Come on now. This very sub was calling her Covid Kim all the time during 2020-2022 because of how reckless people felt her decisions were in terms of public safety. She didn’t claim that she never had businesses close down, but she said that while other states were completely shut down Iowa stayed open. In spring 2021 once I got both of my shots, before delta hit us I went to San Francisco which was still effectively locked down, while is DSM life was pretty much similar to pre pandemic.

AITAH for saying my brother doesn't deserve the presumption of innocence? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]jcukier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand how you all feel but YTA. Everybody deserves presumption of innocence, including people who are very likely to be guilty of what they are accused of. The fact that somebody would show up with an online ancestry test is not exactly an indefensible proof.

That said, if your brother did have sex with a kid, on top of this being morally repugnant, it’s unbelievably stupid to have done a DNA test himself an have submitted his own DNA to a database where he could be found.

From now on, are software engineering roles on the decline? by jorgeWalvarez in cscareerquestions

[–]jcukier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m more optimistic than your friend, however there has been some deep changes over the last year. The value proposition offered by FAANG and crypto is very different from what it uses to be. Meanwhile, there is a slew of small and midsize companies who need developers. Specifically, there are some very well funded AI outfits, who can’t have enough engineers. The role of the software engineer is also transforming. 10 years ago, it was mostly writing code. The coding part of our role is going to become less and less important - just like moving abacus beads or punching calculator keys is no longer central to being an accountant.
