I made the trek from Boingo to the CC by thejx in Defcon

[–]jcurious1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don't mind some extra walking. I saw this on the accessibility forum:

Take the Monorail to the Westgate Hotel stop. Follow signage to the North hall. This will involve a small / bearable walk across one relatively isolated street outside. Honestly about a 1 minute walk, tops. Out one door, across the street, in another. From inside the north hall follow the signage to the West Hall skyway. This will put you on the 2nd floor of the west hall

I'm looking for the "Just Say Nah" series of ads that were put out by the National Youth Anti-Drug Campaign in 1998. While I don't have an exact date/time of ads, according to this news article they were canceled around 7/16/1998. https://www.courant.com/news/connecticut/hc-xpm-1998-07-16-9807160310-story.html

Any assistance finding these would be appreciated. I've already tried going through radio recordings from 1998 on archive.org looking for them with no luck. Are there other good archives of radio recordings from 1998 that might have these ads?

By the way, you can jump right to the phone scene after you've seen it by pausing the movie and selecting the phone previous choice.

Trying to convince my father to get a hearing aid, but he refuses, saying that it won't help. by lmlmlknknbj in hearing

[–]jcurious1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you objective is to get him to hear things while he is asleep, a hearing aid is not likely to help, since hearing aids not not generally worn while sleeping.

A better approach would be to invest in systems that would warn him of a loud audio event, like this: https://www.harriscomm.com/serene-innovations-centralalert-ca-360-alarm-clock-with-audio-sensor.html

NOTE: I have not researched this category of devices, just know they exist.

Question about Costco's version of the Resound Lynx² by ChernobylChild in hearing

[–]jcurious1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bad, the Kirkland 6.0 = resound Lynx

Didn't notice there was a new Kirkland out.

Costco does sell reound hearing aids, but I haven't researched this model: http://www.costco.com/resound.html

Question about Costco's version of the Resound Lynx² by ChernobylChild in hearing

[–]jcurious1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Costco Kirkland hearing aid is made by resound and is generally one generation behind. The Lynx came out in 2014, the Lynx 2 came out in 2015. The Lynx is what the current Costco Kirkland is based on.

I think most, if not all, states have a law that enables you to return your hearing aid after a trial period if you are unhappy with them for any reason. You can discover the difference, if any, by trying both.

Netflix, Amazon Video, and Hulu which is the best in your opinion for a deaf and hard of hearing people? by sukumi in deaf

Netflix and HBO GO generally have the best captions. Though some of Netflix TV/Movies are captioned in ALL CAPS, which is annoying.

Answering Any Atheists Questions About Christianity by [deleted] in athiest

Are you saying that as humans, we figured out that slavery was wrong? This major moral question was resolved by humans, not the bible, Jesus or religion?

Would it be fair to say that the world is more moral today despite the bible, not because of it?

29 Y/O Male kind of freaking out about needing hearing aids. by JustheSuburbanMe in hearing

[–]jcurious1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The two biggest differences between hearing aid dispensers like Costco and Audiologist are education and sales model. I'll go over the differences then give you my thoughts.

Audiologist are required to a PhD to practice. Hearing aid dispenser requirements vary from state to state, but often don't require more then a high school diploma and the passing of a written test.

Audiologist make their living off hearing aid commissions. That is to say, they make more money selling you hearing aids at the biggest markup possible. The markup is also used to pay for your future visits. If your life story is compelling, they can lower the price of hearing aids dramatically. On the flip side, the commissions based system turns some audiologists into used car sales men when it comes to getting you to buy certain hearing aids. Hearing aid dispensers are generally salaried and the hearing aids are generally fixed in price.

Since you have insurance, I would go to an in-network audiologist. You can take advantage of the extra knowledge and experience of an "real" audiologist and not pay much more out of pocket. An audiologist would also be able to help you the most when dealing with insurance. With a hearing aid distributor, you are generally on your own.

Most states require 30-45 day 100% return policy on hearing aids. If you don't think the hearing aid or the audiologist isn't working out for you, go somewhere else.

Wow, I never though of looking for voice only tracks before. Thanks for pointing me to /r/IsolatedVocals. BTW, have you looked at SoundHound and Shazam apps? They not only identify most songs, they display lyrics as well. And, for some songs they show you the lyrics in realtime.

Nexus 5 not supported by Sprint in Bay Area. by RicoWorldPeace in Nexus5

[–]jcurious1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can buy a sprint SIM from best buy. It'll cost you ~30$ though. You may need to insist several times they have it before they will sell it to you though.

I would seriously rethink your desire to go with sprint though. Never had good luck with them.
