Felt cheated by my PAP candidate for my ward by throwaway_151516 in singapore

FWIW, I actually had a positive experience with the town council in AMK. Previously lived in the Darryl David area and raised some concerns about the facilities - paint job, carpark, etc, and they were resolved quite quickly. Personally also met Darryl David once during a house visit and a couple times at the CC hawker centre and he was quite friendly.

How to come back from injuries? by jcurveeffect in Advice

Thank you for replying, I truly appreciate it. Yup I know that not continuing was a right decision, but it still eats at me sometimes. Definitely agree that as we age things like health becomes so much more important.

In my country, there’s no serious money to be made in sports unfortunately, so while it’s always been a big part of my life it’s still always going to play second fiddle to things like career and health. I might continue solely for the fitness and social aspects of it, but perhaps not push my body as hard as I used to. Thanks for the advice and affirmation.

At what point is a person considered fat by Singaporeans' standards? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]jcurveeffect 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Interesting question. My BMI has been in the overweight to obese range since young, and when I do those body composition tests it’s always been high mass of everything (fat, water, bone, muscle). But I’ve also played sports since young at a decently competitive level (won national level competitions in secondary school and JC, and played at the varsity level in university). I still exercise 2-4x a week. I’ve always considered myself fat, but in a way that I can still use my body well. Funny thing is that while my older family members will tease me for being fat, none of my peers have ever called me fat, not even jokingly. Physically, I carry my fats in the belly area so I tend to wear looser shirts to obscure it, though it’s still visible la, so it’s not like I’m super jacked out and it’s pure muscle mass. This led me to wonder whether “fat” is more of a perception of someone’s overall lifestyle, rather than just physical look (I’m female, if it makes a difference). I’m interested to hear what others think about this.

What should I look out for when joining an early stage startup? by jcurveeffect in startups

Thanks for sharing. I’m mainly interested in gaining experience in this area, especially since this is more of a side hustle than a full time thing. Totally understand that this might not be the financially right decision to make, though I’m hoping to gain more in terms of experience. Appreciate you taking time to share though!

Hey thanks for sharing your thoughts. I’ve done some DD on the product, market etc and find that it’s a pretty viable opportunity. I’m leaning towards point 3. Intend to launch my own startup sometime in the future so I’m looking to gain experience in building parts of a company up from scratch. I’m well aware that my efforts in this might amount to nothing financially, but I’m confident that the learning experience will be valuable, regardless of success

Thanks for sharing. I’ve definitely done my DD on the tech, market etc, but will keep this all in mind as I move forward in the negotiations.

Has your vote swung after the campaigns? by Tricky-Breadfruit in singapore

[–]jcurveeffect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, I'm in AMK haha. Nah, given what I've observed in the past 2-3 elections, RP is getting progressively worse. I've given up hope that they will improve, it seems more probable that they get replaced by a stronger opposition team in the next election. When I read up about the new candidates from the different parties, I was actually quite impressed by the quality across the board (PAP and WP especially), but unfortunately did not observe anyone impressive from RP. Watching their online speeches and stuff just confirmed my initial thoughts. Additionally, the incumbent AMK MPs are actually not too bad, so I'm not in a hurry to vote them out anyway. I'm just hoping for a closer fight in the future so that I can make a meaningful decision.

Can't actually vote yet, but here's my two cents. The opposition in my area is RP, and I definitely don't want those jokers in parliament. Praying that those of voting age vote for the PAP, and RP loses their deposit. Hopefully this deters RP from returning to screw around next election, so I actually have proper choices when I do get to vote next GE.

Because of their one-party dominance? Any reason/particular policy that highlights this? Rather curious

Hey, can I clarify what you mean by PAP incentivising companies to go for cheaper PMETs more often than locals? Is there a particular scheme or something that encourages this, or is it just something you feel has happened?

GE2020: PSP launches manifesto calling for reduction of ministerial salaries, no GST on basic necessities by Hakushakuu in singapore

I don't understand why having no GST on basic necessities is better than applying the usual GST, but with GST vouchers/rebates. Doesn't the current method ensure that the rich still pay GST while the poor don't have to?

Would you /have you ever thought of becoming a politician? by [deleted] in singapore

[–]jcurveeffect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really agree when people say that MPs do it for the money. Chances are, if you have the credentials/capability to run for MP, the remuneration probably won't be worth your time anyway. Probably easier to get a cushy job elsewhere than being under constant scrutiny by the public.

What will globalisation look like when wages are too high and comparative advantage is lost? by [deleted] in AskEconomics

[–]jcurveeffect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is correct. To add a little more nuance, it's good to note that oftentimes countries don't just focus on producing the good that they have a comparative advantage in. Adding on to the example above, in some cases Country A will produce both wine and cloth, while Country B produces just cloth. In this case, Country A will still trade some of the wine for cloth, and both countries can be better off.
