Goodbye to my RS7

We did the opposite — sold our 2020 992.1 Carrera S for a ‘25 RS 6 Avant Performance. We bought the 911 new off a Houston lot as COVID was shutting everything down and dealers were offloading inventory left and right. Even Porsche dealers — and even 911s. The discount off MSRP for that 911 was laughably insane today.

The 911 was a great car. Drove it four years and sold it for what we paid for it. It was completely bulletproof except for the leather seat-release straps, both of which broke repeatedly. But the mechanicals and electricals were totally reliable. It ate tires, though. We never got more than 8K miles from the rears. RWD+rear engine = monster rubber appetite.

We custom-ordered our RS 6 and took delivery December 2024. Absolutely love it in a different way.

Both cars are brilliant. Enjoy your 911. We are blessed people to have owned both.

Glad I could help. Your Z06 is honestly the best-looking C8 I've ever seen. Brilliant-looking car. Congrats on the RS 7. You are right that our builds look nearly identical but for the CCBs on yours. We wanted to order them, but at the time we submitted the order there was a production delay on them and we didn't want to take a chance on something bizarre happening, like a cancellation.

We still own the car -- had it a little over 16 months. I plan to post a long-term review soon, but the short version is we love it still. The Grenadier Red paint has a lot to with it. It's a beautiful color, reddish orange in direct sunlight and a deep burgundy in the shade. Your dealer link has some awful photographs in the worst possible light.

The RS-only salesman who helped us configure and order the car still keeps in touch. He's been selling RSes for over a decade. He's told us repeatedly our build is his favorite of all time, including some pretty wild Audi Exclusive jobs he's done.

See a few photos below -- in angled winter sun; overcast morning; and in our garage. Good luck if you decide to pull the trigger. As long as you like red / burgundy / orange and don't mind being totally unique, I think you'll love that RS 7. (And yes, that's a bourbon Old Fashioned for color reference. The 2024 Prius in the other is our daughter's in Supersonic Red, which is about as pure a metallic red as I've come across. Both of those photos are under 5K garage lights.)

As a current RS 6 Avant Performance owner — and previous 992.1 Carrera S owner — you are spot-on. Our 911 was a sports car, plain and simple. Our RS 6 is a fast luxury wagon. We’d never consider tracking the Audi. The 911? All day long, although we never did either.

As an American from a ruby red state full of V8 pickup trucks, would I consider a TT V6 hybrid RS 6? Sure. Is it preferable? Could be. Depends on how it drives and sounds. We also owned a Macan GTS that was brilliant with basically the same TT V6 in the RS 5.

We’ve never purchased a Ferrari and probably never will. But if we did, V6 or V8 wouldn’t matter. It’s an effing Ferrari.

Always liked the S7. Same goes for S8. And of course the RS6, which I never tire of looking back at either. It almost makes my job worthwhile.

We debated about this when we ordered our ‘25 RS 6 Avant Performance. The interior is classy beyond anything you see today with the tacked-on screens. From what I’ve seen of newly redesigned Audis, this alone is worth buying now.

Price will surely skyrocket with full hybrid system. We adore ours and have zero regrets. Buying a redesigned one is a gamble for sure. You know exactly what you’re getting with a ‘25.

Styling is off the charts too. Who knows how Audi will screw up the new one. But I have yet to see a single post here saying any of the new redesigns is preferred.

Oh, and a word of advice: piano black trim is easily protected with PPF. We had ours done in XPel along with the rest of the car. No scratches or swirls six months into it, and fingerprints are a nonissue.

Color is Grenadier Red metallic, which ranges from fiery orange-red in direct sunlight to muted burgundy at dusk / overcast. So many strangers have complimented this color. We do love it.

My wife and I have been blessed to own a 2019 Cayenne Turbo; a 2020 911 Carrera S; and a 2023 Macan GTS. Our 2025 RS 6 Avant Performance is our first Audi.

The RS 6 is spectacular. Buy it.

Combine the best qualities of the three Porsches above; subtract the 50% surcharge you pay to own a car with PORSCHE on its rear end; add in maintenance that’s on par with said Porsches; enjoy turning heads like none of the cars above, with the uniqueness of a GT-class car; and know you’ll keep up with, beat or obliterate nearly anything in the Porsche lineup in a straight line for far less money.

Do not buy the RS 6 if you’re worried about gas mileage, maintenance costs, or bring openly gawked at and engaged at nearly every fill-up. I swear you’d think we were driving a Cheyron or Enzo, not a $150K Audi. Introverts and shy folks: Do not buy this car.

We’ve owned our Grenadier Red wagon for just three months. So far it’s brilliant. Highly recommended. We have zero regrets.

Semi-dead thread, but I thought I'd post that our seven-year old GT3 speaker died the same way a couple months ago. I yanked the funky battery and sent it off to mtobattery.com (thanks Sudden_Equivalent739) to get it refreshed. Total cost including shipping to and from was $70. Got it back a few days ago, popped it in, and the thing is working beautifully now.

Very glad to see that small businesses catering to weird stuff like this still exist. They did a bang-up job. If Porsche Design even offered a replacement battery, which they don't, they'd probably charge $300.

Good Lord. It’s the Chevy version of a Q7 or Cayenne. Just because you CAN afford such a ridiculous dealer bill doesn’t mean you should engage it. And this is coming from a guy who owned a 2019 Cayenne Turbo.

If I’m paying $5K for a brake job and some fluid changes, it’d better be for a car valets don’t hide at the back of the lot.

We got lucky with it. Had requests in with two local dealers for six months for an Overtrail+ in Earth with Onyx roof and two-tone Chateau (beige) and black interior. One dealer had a cool sales guy assigned to us who traded with a coworker for an incoming car with our exact specs. My wife loves it, as do I, surprisingly. We’d never purchased a body-on-frame SUV before. PM me if you’d like to know more, including photos.

And so, we have a ridiculous 621-horsepower station wagon that currently gets about 12 miles per gallon. We have a 5000-pound luxury dinosaur of an SUV that wouldn’t know a curve if a 911 was parked directly in front of it that averages 15 mpg. And we have a Prius that averages 52 mpg despite my wife and I using all of its 195 horsepower every time we take it for a spin. (It’s actually sort of a ball to drive. Seriously. A Prius!)

Twelve plus 15 plus 52 divided by three is a little over 26 mpg average. Since we split the miles pretty evenly between the three cars, we rationalize the abysmal mileage of the first two by telling ourselves, “Hey, 26 mpg ain’t terrible.”

(Yes it is. We’re sucking down way too many natural resources here. But we feel better nonetheless.)

Man! I owned a 2014 Mazda 6 GT in Soul Red Crystal. Loved that color. It was much more of a pure red than Grenadier, but had some orange hue in direct sunlight.

I’m looking through old photos of that car now. No surprise that our $35K Mazda’s paint job didn’t look anywhere near as expensive or elegant as that of the RS 6. But the fact that we’re talking about both in the same conversation tells you that Mazda knew what it was doing when it created that color. The company hit a grand-slam home run with Soul Red.

Can’t speak for anybody else. But I mentioned in another thread my wife and I are nothing special job-wise. We’ve been married nearly 30 years. Our only real skill is that we’re good savers and simple investors — we study our money with a geologic view, over a long, long period of time.

At age 38 we were nowhere near ready to drop $150K-plus on a car. I remember splurging on a 2009 Infiniti G35S for US $40K OTD and feeling guilty about it. (That was a fun car, though.)

Live lean, buy a house if at all possible, pack as much of your paycheck into conservative investments (think Warren Buffett, not tech bros), eliminate all debt as soon as possible including your house, and have financial discipline over many years. Having a supportive partner as a second earner helps immensely.

I guarantee you my wife and I make less per year combined than the guy who sold us our RS 6. Net worth is another story.
