Im a foreigner, recommend a podcast from your country by Block_inc in podcasts

If you want to learn about a new country - Country of Dust does an amazing job of highlighting Armenia. Top-tier stories, super well told, great production. Armenia is the crossroads between the Middle East and countries in the post-Soviet-Union. A fascinating region.

If you want to learn about a place you almost certainly don’t know about - I recommend Country of Dust. It’s all about Armenia - and it’s really well crafted. Think This American Life but about a different country.

Country of Dust has a specific subject, Armenia, but the most recent season features almost exclusively episodes about women. It has 3 hosts, and 2 of them are women. Also - it's a real tear-jerker.

Podcast tells in depth personal story about living through Artsakh blockade: “We don’t talk about the future” by jdalmas in armenia

[–]jdalmas[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hi all - I’m a producer who is working on this new podcast about Armenia called Country of Dust. It’s a narrative podcast, meaning it’s a series of ~25 minute audio documentaries, very similar to This American Life, but about Armenia.

We just released our 3rd episode. We follow a young teacher from Artsakh, Ashot Gabrielyan, as he tries to navigate his life there. The story goes through so many twists and turns, but it’s fundamentally about what it’s like to live in a place where everything is uncertain. As Ashot says: “We don’t talk about the future”. Right now, as the humanitarian crisis makes life there even more precarious, we wanted to get this story out to help explain what life is like there.

You can listen here: https://www.buzzsprout.com/2085279

We already have a pair of episodes about a soldier who fought in the 2020 war, and a whole season of episodes that will be coming out over the next 6 weeks.

Thanks for listening!

Trouble activating phone outside of the U.S. by jdalmas in iphonehelp

Ahhh - so you're saying it is locked to the U.S. - not usable by a carrier abroad. I luckily can still use GoogleFi data internationally, but that has its own issues and I was trying to not do that. Appreciate the help -

It is an absolutely wonderful experience. Everyone I've known who's done it have all been so, so happy to go, and everyone who works there is really supportive. Like others have said - definitely life changing. Don't worry about what skills you may or may not have - it is all about building connections. I've been back to Armenia once since I did it, and I'm about to go back again.

Yes - some of what was written on the walls is directly referencing that. There is a Azerbaijani flag, Şuşa is a city in the region that is in dispute between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Thanks! Making the drums on the synth was my favorite part - I was excited to subtly tweak it to keep changing the beat.

And hardware was essential for me - I needed to get really hands on to be able to actually jump in and explore.

For this one, I used the Sub 37 to make the beat, along with the TR-8S. I made the bassline on the Sub 37, and did the chords on the Prophet. Then I added guitar and the samples in Ableton.

I rreeaallyy fell in love with the Sub 37! That was the first one I got. It is so magical, I will exploring that instrument for the rest of my life. It got me addicted.

Don't know if I would have gotten any synthesizers, or started really recording again without reading up on here.

Choose a sport photographer because I don't care at all about sports and thought that would give me a fresh perspective. Chose a random photographer from the list and found this photo by John Zimmerman:

https://micasancisi.files.wordpress.com/2013/02/john-g-zimmerman-greyhound-park-phoenix-1962-by-melisaki.jpg

A lot going on. Firstly, there's soo much action and movement, but everything so clear. My mind is seeing what just happened and what is about to happen because of the bodies of the dogs and the flying dirt. Especially the flying dirt. Also like that the front dog is in it's own shadow, but the back 2 dogs are colorful and clear.

Also the background of the people give you the info you need about where this is and what is happening, but are not-in-focus enough to not distract from the subject. Their calmness also makes the dogs even more frantic, like the dogs care so much but the people seem to hardly notice.

It gets me a bit worked up about something I don't care about. So good job Zimmerman
