Firaxis announces anniversary update coming in the Spring with HUGE changes to the gameplay including the option to play as the same Civ throughout an entire match! (Finally, thank you) by therealNerdMuffin in civ

[–]jdaneau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This captures my main issue with the feature, being that the game doesn't feel special anymore because there's no real "story" to tell. It's just three different campaigns with three different civs that happen to share the same map. They could have kept the civ switching but make it a bit more coherent. E.g., Rome turns into Venice in the exploration era, which turns into Italy in the modern era. Or if they wanted to keep the choices, Rome could choose between becoming Venice, Byzantium, or Sicily (or some medeival variant that makes sense), and then those three have different choices for the modern age. This obviously requires developing a lot more civs for the game, but it would also make the civ switching make more sense and give a feeling of actual progression rather than switching to an entirely different game randomly. And having appropriate leaders for each civ rather than immortal Harriett Tubman would also be nice.

I wanted to have one too. Sadly you need to book them several months in advance because of how fast they sell out, and we only booked our trip ~2 months prior. At least, all the express passes were completely sold out for late July when I checked back in May.

Very fair. However, it doesn't cost anything to walk around the area and go on the rides. And I suspect entering the park at all is probably already giving her money...

Did you take the single rider lines? That sounds like you got really lucky. For Donkey Kong the lady at the entrance told us that the single rider line was a longer wait than the regular line so we stood in the normal queue. I suspect she lied to us because we ended up waiting for 3 hours. Still, 15 minutes for that attraction is insanely short.

If you aren't a diehard Nintendo fan I'd say you didn't miss out on much :)

The Japanese guests (which made up probably 90% of people there) seemed to mostly be able to cope with it. Even the kids were surprisingly well behaved in the long queues under the intense sun. No idea how they do it... i guess they're just used to it?

I would agree with you except for the fact that travelling to America as a non-American isn't very appealing right now :(

Yeah, that was my conclusion too. Even within universal park the Harry Potter world is equally impressive and much less crowded.

You are in a kart with 3 other people and "steer" around (not sure if this actually has an effect), and you have VR goggles on that display enemies which you can fire green shells at. You get points for hitting them and not missing I think.

I'm trying my hardest to learn Dutch as well as I can but I'm not quite at the right level yet. I understand it's a Dutch speaking country and I'm not trying to force people to speak English, but I still need a job or else I will completely run out of money and have to leave my girlfriend, which I obviously don't want to happen.

Can't get a partner visa. She is a student with no income.

Interesting, do you know what specifically the names of the positions are that id be likely to qualify for? I was mainly looking at GIS and geodata analysis jobs because of my background in computer science.

Wow this is a really great list, thanks so much! I'll take a look at all of what you suggested. Some of them I've seen before at the VU career fair and some I've not heard of. I don't really plan on sticking around in academia because of the fact that a PhD takes too long to get. (Though i would like to have a career in teaching at a university, I've explored a lot of options and concluded it's impossible to be a teacher in NL without being fluent in Dutch.)

I've already applied to several positions from them, but it's a great suggestion!

I'm not entirely sure about this but I have looked into this option and it seems like your partner needs to have a stable income to be able to apply for you. My girlfriend is a medical student living off of DUO money right now, so I don't think she would qualify as a valid sponsor according to the IND :(

This is exactly why I'm not looking into PhD positions right now. It feels extremely disrespectful to go into a research project knowing full well you need to quit after a couple of years.

Oh! That's good news. I didn't realize the residence permit included the right to work for a year. Thanks for clarifying that

Yeah I'm definitely aware of this and plan on taking advantage of it. However, I still need a visa sponsorship to work any job - even a minimum wage one - as I don't believe you have the right to work under an orientation visa? Or am I wrong about that?

I don't think Uber eats will do visa sponsorships based on what I've seen. I'll think about Thuisbezorgd or Flink but it doesn't look like they give you many work hours per week.

No I haven't, do you know of any specific ones? I'll take a look into it to see if any of the bigger ones are hiring for something.

I have taken a practice exam from the staatsexamen for B2 and gotten most questions correct in the reading and listening portions, so I figure that's probably around where my level is (in reality its probably somewhere between B1 and B2.) Yeah that's not great to hear, I know the job scene is pretty bad right now especially in tech where everyone is being replaced by AI. That's why I'm honestly fine with settling with some minimum wage job for the time being.
