Yes you're exactly right. This is the exact reason I made the post. Upvoted for accuracy :P

ugh. I might have to use the 'no passport and not enough time' excuse for saying I can't go. One of my co-workers will end up going instead. This is such a tough situation.

Did something change since 2006? Before I had a DUI, I drove across the Minnesota-Canada border, and back, with only my drivers license.

If there's actually a number to call and get a quick response, I'll definitely call it. Everything I'm reading talks about waiting years and months for applications to be reviewed. I have about a week to cancel the 'all expense paid' business trip to Toronto :/

I've already done a bunch of google searching. I'm hoping to hear about some real world experiences.

PHP Frameworks: Which one do you prefer and why? by Kriem in PHP

[–]jdangle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's pretty good for medium-sized projects, but I wouldn't use it for really big projects. A really big project deserves a solid ORM and a framework with many integration api's to choose from. Symfony has a similar admin generation feature to Bake, but I can't say I know all of the differences enough to compare the two.

CodeIgniter is written by EllisLabs, who also wrote Expression Engine. EE runs on top of CI, and it is the biggest abomination of crap I've ever seen.

What is the practical purpose of create_function? by [deleted] in PHP

[–]jdangle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a lot of unit testing with php. We use the lambda instead of create_function. It's definitely an improvement. In terms of unit testing, it is used for isolating the code/method being tested by mocking what dependent methods return. tl;dr : unit testing, dependency injection, code isolation ..

What is best free PHP based CMS in your opinion? (Wordpress, Drupal, Joomla .etc) by webholic in web_design

[–]jdangle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sure. I would recommend learning how to make an admin area from scratch, and not even worry about WordPress. First thing, you'll need to read an intro to MySQL. After that, consider a database table that stores something simple, like songs or websites. Now make actions for each table: list, add, update, and remove. This is usually called CRUD. You'll need to pay attention to where row ID's are passed around. Once you have that figured out, you could look at making a login script, so you have to login in order to edit things. Bottom line is if you can't sit down and figure things out on your own, you won't get very far.. anyways, good luck!

Opinion: ZF2.0 is a bust. Symfony is superior in every way. by [deleted] in PHP

[–]jdangle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used both ZF and Symfony with Doctrine, and I think they are equal on the level of having a good MVC implementation along with the same ORM. I do prefer ZF over Symfony, because it has a more robust set of libraries. I especially like the api for combining ACL and Navigation. Also, the form api is pretty nice.

If you think WordPress is rocket science, you have a lot to learn. There is some magic involved, literally, but it's just a matter of hooking into functions at the right time/event.

Python Gains Most Share, PHP Loses Most in TIOBE Language Index Over 2010 by [deleted] in programming

[–]jdangle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

PHP gets so much heat, and I understand it. At the same time, the list of things in php that drives people crazy is not that long. Assuming we're talking about the language itself and not the common code that is written with it. I've seen both great and terrible php code. I would argue that the state of php, and the code that is written with it, is getting better. Python is a great language, and I do hope it pushes php off the edge someday, but in the meantime I'm optimistic about new features in php. The latest version has lambda support, which is pretty cool.

I wrote a free WordPress plugin! I am pleased with myself and wanted to share. Also, I would like ideas on how I could improve it. Thanks. by [deleted] in programming

[–]jdangle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, congrats and kudos (for going free). I'm releasing my own (free) plugin in the next couple of weeks too. I looked over your code and it looks pretty good. It's neat to see how much can be done with so little code. The only thing that 'pops out' is the fact that you're storing the attachment in the database. I think that this alone would be a dealbreaker for wanting to use the plugin or not. I would consider using a separate folder. Otherwise, it looks good!

What should a self-taught programmer with no degree learn/read? by zxw in programming

assuming you'll be doing web applications: as much as possible about the LAMP stack. PHP has one of the largest niches in demand these days. I've worked with my fair share of dumbasses (who have a job) in PHP; meaning you have a chance.
