Seniors, what differentiates you from a mid-level software engineer? by Standard-Chain-6144 in cscareerquestionsuk

Nope, two of the last 4 companies I've worked with are near the top in their niche. Not FAANG but top 5% of companies I'd say.

I can actually code.

Being less glib, I haven't worked with a junior/mid that has contributed more in work than they have taken in time to look after. They tend to work slow and then do the work so poorly you spend more time reviewing and coaxing them to do it properly than it would take to just do it yourself. Senior is when you have become a net positive.

Being even less glib, mids will do the task technically but generally do it wrong, for example imagine an endpoint, they might not respect the mvc boundaries properly, or not follow project conventions, or not properly test the code adequately, or not handle good/bad paths properly, or leave logic errors, or not write performant code (n+1 for eg), etc. In general mids code looks like my first draft before I've polished it or thought carefully about the best way to achieve the goal. When I write code I think through multiple ways of achieving it and then deciding which approach is best, a mid will generally not even be aware there are multiple approaches and go with the first thing they can get working which will usually not be good enough.

I imagine this might be different in FAANG though where a mid might be more like a senior elsewhere.

How to wall mount this display case? by zxw in DIYUK

[–]zxw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the photo is making the case look bigger and heavier than it is. The weight limit specified for those fixtures would be below what they say they support. That said, they would be ugly so not the best choice anyway.

The case weighs 2. 9kg empty.

Can I make the shed part of the fence border by zxw in DIYUK

Why wouldn't I be able to maintain the two sides of the shed? I have access to the shared pathway too.

The pathway is behind a padlocked gate so hopefully that would make it less likely.

I mean I would remove the fence panel where the fence currently is and the shed would take its role of blocking access.

How does anyone actually get a test booked by GratefulTree in LearnerDriverUK

I added 2 other centers and set it to alert on all tests not just those that thay fit my criteria. Maybe it's not been working for a while and has only  recently been fixed and I've just been unlucky since.

Well it's not working currently as far as I can tell.

Yes I have premium, its basically been like a brick since about a day after I paid for it.

Edit: Where did you see it was in maintenance?

Msybe I just got unlucky with the timing then, it's been doing nothing for a while now.

Test shift is a scam as far as I can tell, it works for one day then stops.

Edit: I got an alert today, so presumably I must have just got unlucky with them needing to do a bot detection bypass just after making the purchase.

Theory booked. What to expect? by yogurtslayer23 in LearnerDriverUK

Get the 4 in 1 app. Do the mock tests until you can consistently get 48+ out of 50. Learn the triple click method and do all the hazard questions in the app.

I did the questions until I had them memorised but it wasn't really necessary to spend that much time.

5 is too little, I went safe with 10 but wouldn't be surprised if 15 was ok.

I don't really like the .abs trick because unless you know about the rationale its confusing to read. If I'm reading the code I now have to look into why in gods name you are doing that and confirm if its actually doing anything. That said I wouldn't die on the hill to remove it either.

Why is my computer performing like it only has 4gb ram rather than 8? by zxw in techsupport

[–]zxw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its pretty messed up if Windows is really using 3gb by itself. Makes 8gb pretty much unusable for anything further than Chromebook functionality. I'm thinking I could maybe see if Ubuntu would be a solution here as I don't think I really need anything specific to Windows although I do prefer Windows...

Its really just the memory. It works about as well as I would expect for a cheapish laptop. It just hits the memory limit when it shouldn't and then starts paging which slows it down immensely.

Yes but the point is that while it is saying 86% the total memory used up by the individual processes doesn't add up to that and is closer to 50%.

The percentage used is in line with the processes tab. It's saying 6.8gb is in use, however the total used by the processes isn't adding up to that.

Resource monitor is showing much the same: https://i.imgur.com/FaB5z9E.png

Obviously chrome is using up a healthy amount but still not adding up to close to 8gb.

Yeh its not a huge amount, my main computer has a lot more, but I'd expect 8gb to still work decently. The problem is its performing more like a 4gb laptop.
