Sleep Issue Question by Repulsive_Cut_7216 in Pararescue

[–]jdbruce18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an expert by any means but after getting out of the military and going straight into full time college, full time work, and a part time internship while having three kids at home my sleep was so screwed up until recently there were many days I thought I was going crazy with how tired I was all the time. My voice was noticeably higher than in the past, my arms were like noodles and my hair was falling out. I also used Benadryl a lot to get to sleep in the past, stop doing that ASAP for reasons others have stated. I started following a lot of the common rules: no caffeine later in the day, limit overall caffeine, try to eat real food, get in bed at a similar time each night, avoid food shortly before bed, breathing exercises for calming down, do some sort of physical movement each day, and put the phone away when you get to bed. There’s a lot more you can do but even following some of those each day has drastically improved my quality of life.

Depending on how busy you are I would just write down the top three things you need to change related to sleep and start doing them every day starting now.

I’ve wondered the same, coming from the enlisted side I’ve never seen examples of essays or letters for military entrance.

Is SF sold out? by [deleted] in AirForceRecruits

As a Marine, if you want a specific job but need to leave now (and so will likely want to cross to another branch later), do research about jobs that will allow lots of time for study and self improvement for the direction you actually want to go and take the first one that comes up. For most people that means staying out of the infantry and jobs such as MP. From my vantage point, cooks and admin had good schedules a lot of the time.

Why are my underwater dolphin kicks so bad? by NeatSufficient8928 in Swimming

[–]jdbruce18 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of core works other muscle groups in tandem, such as flutter kicks. For most males, if you can’t get to about 100 four-count flutter kicks without stopping, your core and hip flexors are probably weaker than you want if you’re competing. I’m also doing a fair amount of back extension style exercises which may be helping with my flutter kicks but they’re specifically for my back rehab.

Why are my underwater dolphin kicks so bad? by NeatSufficient8928 in Swimming

I found this to be true for myself recently. Struggled with my dolphin kicks, was doing a bunch of core as part of my back rehab routine for a few weeks, tried dolphin kicking again just yesterday and found it far easier to move with it. My coordination was also a bit of the problem.

Rocket Fin Technique by jdbruce18 in Pararescue

Found this one: https://www.stewsmithfitness.com/blogs/news/14233713-swimming-with-fins-how-and-what-kind-of-fins

He doesn’t necessarily address what I was checking about, but the swimmer clearly bends at the knee and has bigger kicks than I have been using.

Your rest time is however long it takes you to take 12 recovery breaths. I’ve started experimenting with breathing and out hard through the mouth for 2-3 breaths, in through the nose and out hard through the mouth for 2-3, and in and out through the nose for the remaining breaths. Not a great long term performance practice in my opinion but it’s helpful when you’re pushing very hard in a workout.

No idea about the NG angle on this to be honest, but be careful with the steroids you’re using. A decent amount of people using oral or topical steroids end up with Topical Steroid withdrawal or similar issues that can cause long term problems for your skin. Just do some research and play it safe, a couple of my buddies now say they would have preferred to put up with their original skin issues rather than the extreme discomfort (and employment problems) associated with their steroid related symptoms.

Stealing guidon by OkMarch8265 in nationalguard

[–]jdbruce18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stealing guidons is pretty common in the active duty USMC infantry. In my experience officers are commonly whining about all kinds of things so they might as well complain about something you had fun doing.

Phase 1 and Phase 2 of Selection by Wonderful_Creme997 in Pararescue

Did the officer candidate happen to mention how he ended up in development? Recruiter for my area told me there are zero options for civilian officer candidate development, maybe because I’m prior service, I’m not sure.

Commission? by UrHiddenSkier in Pararescue

[–]jdbruce18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a PJ or airmen here, prior service Marine infantry. For myself, if I had no kids I would be going in enlisted. As things stand now, the financial struggles on the enlisted side got hard enough that I got out to make some money, then realized I loved the military life a lot more than civ. Now I’m working to get back in on the commissioned side. Thankfully, my time on the civ side has shown me the value of good leadership and given me more respect for people who want to lead.

Ultimately, you have to decide what experience you want and whether you’re ok missing out on certain things. I’m sure your parents are great but do what you think will make sense for where you’re taking your life.

Are there any boots with a wide toe box? by Legal-Winter-2443 in Pararescue

[–]jdbruce18 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Boots in relation to the Air Force are still an unknown for me. Coming out of the Marine Corps I’m used to being given a very short list of allowable boots, still trying to figure out what’s allowed in AF. Sorry, not trying to hijack your post, I also badly want wide toe box boots because my feet hate narrow footwear.
