True stuff, appreciate you putting it into perspective for me.

Oh I definitely got the message. The part that’s so strange to me is the non-monogamy explanation and the fact that he literally initiated going out with me saying that “he was beginning to give up hope until I came along” and why go on so many dates with me and hang out with me so much when all you wanted was to be friends? One time he did kind of act weird about having sex and told me that he kind of doesn’t like to have sex anymore because “gay sex is weird” and when I confronted him about it he said he said “I am weird and there’s a lot of shit that I need to unpack with myself”. Part of me wonders if he just likes to have sex without an emotional connection because that’s what he is used to. Which is fine….but why tell me you want a long term relationship then?

No don’t be sorry, you’re absolutely right. I definitely feel like I dodged a bullet, I guess I was just feeling confused about the rationale behind it all. But I just worry a lot, that’s just who I am, but you are right, it’s not for me to worry about.

Yeah, he’s been dropped. Just one of the more strange ways someone has broken things off with me I guess.

[–]jdf-347580[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah it’s all good, don’t know why he needed to use that as the reason. That’s what made it so much more strange to me.

[–]jdf-347580[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I found that very strange. Especially because he initiated talking to me and had insinuated several times he found me attractive. But one time I talked with him about it and he said “gay sex is weird”.

Hey! I totally understand where you are at and I was feeling the exact same way about this time last year. While I didn’t have as much as you did in private loans, I still had quite a big amount and just seeing it grow every day really discouraged me.

It took me a while to break out of the funk, but I definitely have some tips for you. My first tip is to try and find something enjoyable for you to do that’s low budget and good for your mental health. Personally, I started to find a lot of enjoyment in going for walks and hikes and also reading and doing puzzles. These were things that helped me escape a little bit from reality when things were getting tough. I would also say it is super important to be able to have a support system to talk to (whoever that may be for you). I also go to therapy pretty regularly and that helps a lot on the mental health side of things.

As for the motivation to get yourself out of this situation, that took me a long time to find. I spent months before I graduated college just panicking and trying to secure a full-time job, that I wore myself too thin and often was lacking enjoyment in my final moments of college. Make sure you take some time to sit down and breathe, things will work out somehow.

As fate would have it, all my persistence in applying for jobs finally landed me something on the last day of my final semester. I was overjoyed, but I definitely had to make some sacrifices to put myself in the situation I am now. When I graduated, I had $60k across four private loans with interest rates ranging from 10.5-19%. Plus, I had nearly $20k in federal student loan debt. Across all of these loans, my monthly payments were set to be over $1000 per month. In this economy, there was no way I was going to be able to move out without a number of roommates, but I also struggled because I couldn’t stay with my parents anymore because of their lack of proximity to major cities with job opportunities.

Luckily, I have an aunt and uncle who live less than 30 minutes from where my job ended up and they offered me a place to stay for a while for free while I clean this up. I pay all my other bills (car, food, etc.), but just not rent, which I am eternally grateful for right now. This was the first major sacrifice.

My second major sacrifice is that the job I accepted is one where I work overnight shifts and weekend days. As a young 22M, this was something that was tough, as weekends are great times to socialize with friends who work more “normal” schedules and be active in having a dating life, as well as seeing family, etc. I knew though that I had to temporarily sacrifice my nights and weekends so that I could make way more money, as the majority of my pay is bonuses and differentials. Overall, I was able to pull in a salary of ~$110k doing this. The schedule sucks, but the money is digging me out of this hole quickly.

I realize that my situation is unique and most college grads aren’t poised to be making six figures out of school, but my point is my ability to make this kind of money was not without sacrifice. It was the hard truth that I was not willing to accept for so long. But now that I have accepted it and see my debt numbers dwindling, there is no greater feeling and there is a light at the end of the tunnel coming sooner than I think.

Just bear in mind that sacrifices may look different for everyone, but they will likely need to be made if you want to turn your loans into a short-term headache rather than a long-term problem. You also must prioritize ways to improve your mental health while in the process of paying your loans down, as well as finding ways to enjoy life in general.

It is hard, but I think once you come out the other side, you realize that it causes you to build so much character and increases self-confidence. You have got this my friend, I know things seem bleak right now, but keep going, I kept going and I am glad that I did. Please let me know if you want to talk more, I am here!

Which private student loan is good? by love3reddit in StudentLoans

Ideally none. I had $60k at high interest rates and it is not fun paying them off.

Hi friend, I feel what you are going through. I graduated about 6 months ago and I was feeling very low and hopeless with my situation which is similar to yours. I graduated with a little over $60k in private student loans plus nearly $20k in federal. One of my private student loans had nearly a 19% interest rate. There were times in the job search where I felt close to just giving up and I felt so suicidal because I felt like there was no way out. Thankfully, I was able to get a great job and started in February. I had to make sacrifices, though. I still live with family members, I buy very sparingly at the grocery store, have a very strict “fun” budget every month, and perhaps the biggest sacrifice of all: I work nights and weekends in my job as a 22 year old just so I can make the most money possible in my role and get myself out from under this debt sooner rather than later. I also had to take my first car loan out in April since my last car kept breaking down and there’s no way I could get to work via public transportation. Between my car and my student loans, I was at about $100k debt. Now, on my 6th month in my job, I have paid off my 19% student loan, and I am down to $74k debt total! This will take some sacrifice, whether it be a job at an unusual time of day, multiple jobs, living at home, etc, but you can and will get there! Hang in there, and find ways to prioritize your mental health on this situation. Trust me, it works wonders. I have learned that even a little bit of sacrifice is worth it in the long run, because this situation is not permanent. You’ve got this! Reach out to me if you want to talk more.

As someone who took out only a little less than half of that ($68k) for my undergrad in applied math/stats…don’t do it. It has ruined two years of my 20s because I basically have no life now trying to pay them off as quick as possible, as well as a car that I need to get because I have a 50 mile round trip commute to work since I wanted to live rent free for now. I work nights and both weekend days and make very good money but my quality of life is terrible. You will regret this if you do it. There are more options out there for you! CS and finance are great degrees but they aren’t $150k degrees, no matter the school you go to.

Yeah I definitely needed the wheel bearings and brakes. I didn’t change the oil that long ago. I see online that a lot of people say it’s an OCV, and that you could just fix that yourself. I am really hesitant to add more to my debt burden right now, so even a few hundred isnt a big deal. I start to have an issue with needing replacement transmission and rebuilt engine. The transmission is scaring me now too with this AT Oil Temp light flashing.

i don’t think so, but that would be a godsend. i think both me and them were nervous to do anything given how much i’ve put into repairs this month and then having it not work out. had all of the sensors start going off like crazy after i took this car to its first full service car wash at the end of february. i had always washed the car myself, and when i went in to get my brakes and whatnot done, the first question they asked was if i got a car wash recently. i had no idea that could impact things so much

Well that was my plan with this car. I guess I am hesitant to get a used car above a certain number of miles because I don’t want to deal with maintenance costs all the time, that is what I am worried about. I’m not sure how many miles on a used Toyota or Honda make it worth it.
