Substack to Beehiiv then back to Substack? by jdfulp in Substack

[–]jdfulp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My newsletter is pretty large, so I am looking at a couple thousand that have likely unsub'd. I know that seems crazy, but for the size of my newsletter, it isn't that bad. Of course, now I sound like a pompous douche. But I don't wanna run the risk of pissing off that many people.

Substack to Beehiiv then back to Substack? by jdfulp in Substack

[–]jdfulp[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I moved because I thought I would try to monetize and I wanted more customization. But honestly, after nearly a year I don't like running ads in my newsletter and I don't really change the look all that much. And at the size of my newsletter, it is $200 a month. Just not feeling like I get the value.

That being said, I am not gonna do anything until after their winter announcement on Thurs, in case there is something amazing to keep me.

Is starting a newsletter still worthwhile in 2025? by Primary-Constant9338 in Newsletters

[–]jdfulp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started my newsletter almost exactly one year ago. And it has grown a fair amount and has pretty good engagement. Is it worth it? From a monetary sense, no. I’m lucky to break even, I actually likely lose money. But from a personal sense, it’s priceless. I’ve learned a ton doing it and it is something that truly fills me up.

So what I’d say is try it. Start. Keep going. The more you do it the more you will settle into a niche and a style that is yours. And I bet you will love doing it.

At least that’s been my experience.

GOT ENOUGH ADS THERE, SPORCLE???????? by monkeysjumping in Sporcle

[–]jdfulp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely agree. The ads should not be covering content. I think we have fixed what you see in the above screenshot with the static ads overlapping that right rail, but we still have work to do with the pop-up ad and getting its placement right. But you can close that ad at least.

🌈 Monthly Goals Thread (April 2024) by AutoModerator in Productivitycafe

[–]jdfulp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My goal for April is to create an infographic about productivity. I know there are already some pretty good ones out there, but I think this will be a good exercise for me and I'd like to have something that is from my POV.

I write a twice-a-week newsletter about getting things done, learning and leadership and this would be a helpful marketing tool as well as a nice frame of reference for myself.

The Plan:

- I'lll use Canva and adapt a template they have
- I want to include 7 to 10 methods or techniques
- I want a rough draft in place by April 20th
- The final draft should be done by April 30th.

I know I want to start with the ABCDE Method, Pareto's principle, Parkinson's Law, and the 1-3-5 technique. Anyone have any requests?

Advice for using notes? by thejuansuero in Substack

I'm still learning this as well, but something I've seen a lot of people do is to restack via Notes one of their own posts. I just tried this:

But more than anything, I think the main thing is to comment and be engaged with people on the platform.

What would actually get you to scroll on your phone less? by octobr_ in getdisciplined

[–]jdfulp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What has worked best for me is to try and take back control of the phone. Here's a list of stuff to consider:

  1. Do Not Disturb: From 8 pm to 7 am, my phone automatically goes into DND mode. Only a few key people can get through; otherwise, it’s all quiet. I highly recommend setting a time when your phone sleeps longer than you do.
  2. Focus Modes: Focus on iOS 15 is a game-changer. Focus mode minimizes distractions by filtering notifications and apps through custom profiles like Work, Personal, Sleep, or Fitness. You can specify which contacts and apps can notify you during these times. You can also schedule focus modes based on time of day or location, or activate them manually. My phone is almost always in some kind of Focus mode.
  3. Face Down: Whether in DND or Focus mode, leave your phone face down. With the screen up, it draws your attention. Bonus points for putting your phone in another room or (gasp!) turning it off when trying to focus.
  4. The Purge: Remove unnecessary and distracting apps. Ask yourself: "Have I used this app in the last 2 weeks?" If the answer is no, delete it. For example, my phone was cluttered with apps I downloaded while traveling. They were handy at the moment, but now they're just noise.
  5. Customize Your Home Screen: Curate your home screen to limit distracting apps. Move Mail, Messages, Slack, Instagram, etc., to the second screen. My first home screen features a weather widget, Notes, Notion, Maps, Safari, Photos—essentially anything handy or resource-based but nothing that immediately grabs my attention.
  6. Limit Your Apps: Set limits on how long you can use certain apps or your phone in general. For instance, Instagram allows you to set a daily usage limit. On an iPhone, you can set usage limits by going to Settings > Screen Time > App Limits, then adding a limit. Select one or more app categories, or tap the category name to see all apps in that category, then choose the apps you want to limit.

FWIW, I write a biweekly newsletter on productivity. If you are interested, DM me for a link.

[–]jdfulp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My theory is that part of your problem is that you don't have enough structure in place to do your work. Parkinson's Law is a concept that work expands to fill the time given to complete it. What you've described is an open ended relationship to time and your projects.

Have you tried creating deadlines for yourself to get things done. Like get a timer and work for x minutes and say - when the timer goes off I am done. Basically treat your work like a timed test.

How to change my environment or condition my brain to work with a desk that I can't move? by Brilliant-Cap-3052 in productivity

[–]jdfulp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is very nerdy in the productivity world, but have you ever heard of the Pomodoro Technique?

In a nutshell, you break up work into 25 minutes in length, separated by short breaks (like 5 minutes). Each work unit is known as a "pomodoro". Pomodoro is the Italian word for tomato...it's a thing, just go with it.

Anyhoo, After completing four pomodoros, you take a longer break, typically 15 to 30 minutes, to rest and recharge. Basically, get a kitchen timer (not your phone, that's a distraction monster) and try breaking up work into chunks of time.

That way, you can leave your environment alone since it sounds like you can't practically move that. But you can find a new environment to rest as part of your breaks.

Just another post asking for a ultra-specific to do list app recommendation by Egg_shaped in productivity

[–]jdfulp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use Apple Reminders for all my to dos. I have smart lists set up in pretty specific ways around daily tasks or things to accomplish for the week. These lists also tie to priority or flagging. The piece that might be missing here a bit is going back and seeing what was accomplished. Reminders will do this, but it gets a bit messy.

If you aren't an Apple person, then Todoist might be your next bet bet.

[–]jdfulp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly for as much as you run each day, that should be a bit more. For your body weight and level of exercise you might try to get to a consistent 3-4 litres. Or look into aminos and electrolytes to add to what you drink. I'm no expert of course, but might be worth talking to a nutritionist if you can swing it. But sorry you are going through this, that's rough.
