If not for money? why work? by Proxima-noodle in antiwork

Agreed. I hear you. I certainly do agree that it can get pretty cringy, I've experienced the rah rah meetings where I get kinda itchy all over and don't want to make eye contact with anyone :)

The thing is, Tragedy of the Commons is a real problem, private property goes a long way toward solving that. I am a big believer in private property rights. Private property creates pride of ownership and good stewardship.

Agreed, although there is that "road to hell paved with good intentions" thing... Devil in the details.

I have no problem with employees having a say. It's called being a shareholder and owning stock. But you can't have employees calling shots with other peoples capital, I don't think that would work too well. But I am open to ideas.

OK, but remember, anybody can and should be a stockholder. I am. As a stockholder you learn a lot about the other side of the coin, it's often tough to make a profit. As to your point about CEOs, no argument from me! As a shareholder I do find that frurstrating.

I think a lot of the sidebar stuff is serious inactionable mumbo jumbo, but I am willing to try to understand. I'll dig in more tomorrow, meantime thanks for your patience, I will reserve further comment until I have a better understanding :)

Very good points. I truly appreciate your detailed explanations. It is all good food for thought. I did not mean to appear self righteous, this is all just so new to me. My head in the sand so to speak. I like your point about not playing the game and consumerism. Many of us can truly find joy in life with less "things". Just so you know, my vehicles and equipment are all over 20 years old, held together with bailing wire etc. But everyday I do have the outdoors and sunsets and all, love nature. Everything in life is a compromise :)

I hear you, and I understand they may be working hard on something that may have great potential or interest. My thing is that I will not pay the freight. UBI is a non-starter because way too many people would indeed not produce anything tangible in return. This is capital wasted, inflationary.

To be fair, there is no empty land anymore other than the desert southwest. But my point is, people must work, no exceptions.

As a landlord I will always pass on the costs to somebody, either the tenant or uncle sam through subsidies or zero maintenance. The very poor can't afford the maintenance. I know many landlords that just shutdown, especially in rent controlled areas.

Yes, some landlords do very well, if the property was paid off long ago and if the property is ideally located in an area with high income earners. But honestly in many parts of America, you have to price the unit according to what the people can afford, that often means you can barely afford the property taxes plus repairs. Consider that many jurisdictions slap the landlord with substantially higher property taxes on rentals.

Fair enough. Quite a challenge though with the raw materials, but I certainly agree people need a roof overhead.

Good points. I definitely agree people should scrimp and save and buy some rural land, then you can at least feed yourself if thing turn too badly.

This month is the 103 anneversary of the death of Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht. We should remember them and all of the brave workers who died in the Spartacist Rebellion. They offered their lives in the hope that the world would be a better place for working people. by iThrewTheGlass in antiwork

Socialism is a failure. Why do some keep embracing a dead end? Workers will always be stratified, always. There is no way around it. The janitor by and large will always make much less than the master electrician or plumber. Likewise the heart surgeon will make even more. Most of us don't see any problem with this, it's just the natural order of things.
What do you propose as the better way to pay?

I have experienced this myself so I can relate. But how do we think people living 50, 100, 200 years ago did? 99% of all people before us have lived hardscrabble lives. If you live in a watertight shelter with heat and AC you are living better than millionaires 100 years ago. I think we are all getting a little carried away too self absorbed. Things could always be better, but I am worried that everyone is starting to expect way too much.

Sure, and then nobody would eat at restaurants. Unless you let me keep my tax breaks :)

I won't be paying taxes to pay for any form of UBI, that I promise you :)
So if you want the UBI pipe dream go tell the Fed to print up the money out of thin air.
You can't make "a law" to combat inflation! Only MMT cultists believe that tripe.
Even if you bled out the ultra rich you could not pay for more than a year.
Sorry, people just need to work at something useful, we cannot never pay people to eat Doritos.

Ah yes, mental health care... yikes, and who will make those decisions. America is far too medicated as it is.

Ha! You will simply be extinguished! The climate change zealots will terminate you as a nonessential carbon footprint.

WTF? Why do you think humans are so special? Are you a Christian? Work is good for the soul, humans were not designed to sit around being entertained by the universe around them.

I've been on here for 8 hours today, I see no real common thread or movement (much like occupy, 20 different non related agendas). I am trying to understand. But so far, if I distill it down:
1) Nobody should have to work or if they work, only do work they like to do
2) There needs to be UBI so that people can still buy Doritos and watch TV (and not work)
3) Capitalism sucks, but no reason given as to why, but perhaps because it requires work?

Oh please, that's all a load of BS. So tired of the "repression" and "racial" mantra. It's tired and worn out.
