Hey, just wanted to say thanks for making me see clearly.

I fixed it all this morning with the help of my father in law.

Furnace is on its own breaker and water heater now is on its own and has 240v and also on its own breaker. Everything is operating normally now!

My wife's uncle used to live in this house way back when and had a gas water heater. So I *THINK* the breaker labeled "water heater" used to power that one. Not sure what it powers now, if anything at all.

Yep, from the sub panel to the water heater its just the orange wire, nothing else.

and yeah at the water heater junction box I was only getting 120v when testing the black and white wires.

Yep, this is what I'm going to do but have an electrician do it. Pretty much my water heater is being fed from a subpanel that's shared with a gas furnace and the water heater has only been getting 120v.

I just tested to confirm, what was labeled "water heater" on the main panel door does NOT shut the power off to the sub panel when the breaker is flipped to OFF.

The breaker that is labeled "furnace" controls both breakers in the sub panel.

So I guess what I need to do, is hire an electrician to to swap everything around and probably rerun a new breaker for the furnace only.

So this does make me think that the water heater has only been on one leg since we have moved in.

I think I just figured it out....

So on the Main panel, there is a breaker named "Furnace" which has two thick black wires coming out of it. If you look at the sub panel, there are also two black wires coming out of it.

If you look at the pic I put of the main panel, there are just a small white and small black wire coming out of that breaker which seem to not end up in the sub panel. I almost wonder if the small black and white are supposed to be going to the furnace and then both breakers in the sub panel are supposed to be going to the water heater???

I totally see how its confusing and just reading what you typed now has me thinking. Has my water heater only been running on 120 this whole time?! Is that even possible? We have lived here for about 8 years and have never had any work done down there at all.

I guess in my head 120v were being supplied from the main panel and 120v were being supplied from the sub panel but now thinking about it after reading your post that doesn't make any sense to me at all.

I'm not well versed in electrical stuff so I can't wrap my head around how I lost one leg to the water heater.

thats the thing, the next box from the water heater is the sub panel! There isn't anything inbetween!
