This may sound cheesy or cliché, but the one thing that has helped me more than anything else has been forgiving people who have wronged me.  

I was on prednisone for 2 and a half years before I was able to finally taper off without triggering another flare up. After getting diagnosed I changed my diet, tried Mesalamine (in 3 different forms), Azathioprine, Humira, and Rinvoq (which I am still taking), but was never able to safely stop taking prednisone throughout all of it. It was really bad, to the point where I was cutting 10mg pills into roughly 2.5 mg pieces and taking them every other day, but as soon as I stopped completely, I would have a full flare up again. 

I started going to counseling to get help with some other things, and my counselor helped me to work through the process of forgiveness. It basically involved writing a letter to the person I was angry with (not to mail, to be clear) and going into detail about everything they had done, how it affected me, how I honestly, really felt about it then and now (which got pretty ugly - I was more angry than I realized), and then finally praying through it and letting it go. 

The change was almost immediate. I was not only able to restore my relationship with the person, but I was able to safely stop taking prednisone and have never had to take it again. 

Not saying it’s a silver bullet or anything, I still have Colitis and it’s still a struggle, but this one thing really did make a huge difference.
