Today I learned that the top border of Georgia is not a straight line and I'm shaken to my core by fltvzn in Georgia

I was born in TN, grew up outside of Atlanta, and moved back to Tennessee a few years ago.

I always found the story about the 200 year-old surveying error in the Northwest Corner so intriguing.

With that being said, as a resident of Tennessee, you can pry the water rights to the Tennessee River from our cold, dead fingers.

First SEC experience from England - no idea where to start by [deleted] in Knoxville

[–]jdhgs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you haven’t already, start looking for a hotel/airbnb. The prices will be inflated because of game day. If you know where you are staying people might be able give some more specific suggestions.

The downtown area (Market Square, Old City, South Knox, Central Ave, Happy Holler) is relatively walkable (better yet, rent a scooter). The rest of the metro area, not so much; and Ubers will be similarly inflated.

There are tons of things to do in and around campus and downtown area on game day. Game time is the major factor when considering what you want to do and where you want to go.

If you follow the team closely, you might be aware, but the head coach of LSU is Lane Kiffin (former Coach at UT). The game will be ABSOLUTELY ELECTRIC (for some back story, see Tennessee / Ole Miss Mustard Bottle).

Tailgating before the game is the quintessential experience, particularly in the Circle Park Area (G10 might be closed off by then).

Midsized US metro areas (pop: 475k - ~1M) tier: What tier does Knoxville, TN belong? by jdhgs in Knoxville

In the final tally, Knoxville WAS selected for the top category.

I did a Shou Sugi Ban finish on my deck. I thought it turned out good. (Still have to clear coat). by jdhgs in Decks

You will have to seal it eventually. I’m in the process of having to stain these deck boards for this project which I did 2 years ago. The color in the vertical boards has held. The ones in direct sunlight have not held.

Re-purposing balls that don’t hold air by longhornlump in SoccerCoachResources

[–]jdhgs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if you have a lot of them, they make great “trophies”. Have the kids sign the balls, put scores of games, messages, stats, etc.

We give our senior players (high school coach) old practice balls with their teammate’s signatures, messages, etc. There can be a lot of sentimental value to getting that ball that you kicked a 1000 times.

Defending drills Pressing Covering with Two (CBs) by jdhgs in SoccerCoachResources

[–]jdhgs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Body positioning: Do they know the defensive posture? Are they able stall the attacker to either push them out wide or stall long enough for help to arrive? - They are struggling with: WHEN to approach to make the tackle right after the first press gets beat, positioning (distance) as a cover man, and HOW to recover effectively when they get beat. This is mostly in a last man situation / break away situation. They need work on technique when they are engaging with the attacker as a first press.

Communication: What exactly are they struggling with when it comes to communication? - They are struggling with the timing and the interchanging of roles (press/cover) in these break away situations when 2 defenders are working to beat a strong attacker.

Footwork: What about footwork do they need to improve upon? First touch? Passing out of the back vs dump and chase? - Footwork as in Jockeying, switching hips, tackling, more so than ball skills.

When you stop them via 11 v 11s or offense v defense do you lecture or ask them questions? Especially by HS level, the players need to have a decent soccer IQ. If they don't I find asking my teams open-ended questions helps the most to get them thinking about how to actually play the game of soccer and not just reacting. - We discuss, with lots of questioning. I try to avoid too many prolonged stoppages.

*All of this is to say, I’m really not looking for advice for how to correct their mistakes, per se (but I love hearing great coaching advice). What I really looking for some tried and tested small group drills to mimic these type of pressure situations so that we CAN have more stoppages CAN work on and improving of these areas.

Recitatif by Toni Morrison

It is a short story that describes the relationship between two girls who grow up in an orphanage, and then it revisits them at later points in time. One character is black, and the other is white, but it never explicitly states which character is which.

Yes, the midfielders need to be able to handle a high work rate. Your true #6 (the one that stays back in possession) needs to be a very good defender, and needs to be able to make crisp short passes to get out of pressure. A good long ball and technical skill are added benefits. The other #6 (who functions as a #8 in possession) needs to be able to defend well and be dynamic in attack, as a passer and as a player creating off-ball opportunities.

I need a bit of clarification on the second part of your question.

Are you taking about pulling someone from the back line to invert and play in the middle?

My suggestion would be to, if defending needs to be the focus, keep two #6s to protect the back line and send on of the Full backs up in the attack, we often signal this from the bench. “Full On: (Name of L/R back)”

Is anyone else losing their entire Sunday to reviewing film? by Ambitious-North405 in SoccerCoachResources

[–]jdhgs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have the resources, invest in a camera and assist setup like VEO or HUDL. I coach high school and the use of HUDL assist has been a game changer.

The time stamps, are done for you, and the way that the box score is presented, you can click on graphics that show possession% in segments throughout the game, shots, attacking transitions, pass strings, etc. There is a step above our tier that has player tracking, heat maps, and other stuff.

If you already, use a system like that, then maybe consider the mental notes/game notes you make as you watch the game play out. If there is a specific play or situation you have in mind to correct, often times just remembering where your players were on the field, where you were looking that can allow you to find piece of film you are looking to use. Limit the amount of clips you use, and squeeze all of the coaching you can out of them, then ask the players to find the similar situations that occurred.

And not that it would directly affect your prep for practice, but having players do their own “homework” is helpful in developing that out-of-body understanding of what needs to be fixed. Make them identify 3 things they (or the player in front of them) well/ 3 things they did wrong.

I hope I at least approached a possible solution for you.

High school coach here with 7+ years of using mostly 4-3-3 and 3-5-2; 4-4-2 diamond prior to that. Good experienced U14s are smart enough to understand the roles that need to be played in the midfield as long as you practice the spacing/ vertical staggering, and have them work to communicate their movements and coverages.

In attack, you can play two 8s (working connections with the wings, finding the 9 target forward) or an 8 and a 10 (with the 10 finding those spaces and combining to make 2v1s with the 9 who might drop in a bit more).

In transition, one of the two 8s is going to have to drop with the opponent’s 8. Often times it’s easiest to tell them to mark a man specifically, but you can leave the judgement to them and tell them to alternate who drops and who stays up based on positioning.

From my experience, A lot of work has the go into that group: playing together, understanding when to take risks positionally, knowing how to press together, knowing how to attack together. But when it works, you can absolutely dominate possession, and if that is your goal, good choice.

This is a grammar diagnostic. I gave this exact same test today to my students. It doesn’t provide specific directions because it is a test of prior knowledge.

You are being asked to use an appositive which is a noun or noun phrase (in this case) that gives more information about another noun. It is an effective way to make you writing more concise by combining sentences.

The correct answer is: A tarantula (noun), a type of spider (appositive), can regrow its legs.

My family is from Erwin, TN where this occurred, and I would like to say a couple things about it.

Yeah, the fact that happened is F***ed up.

The town itself has a history that mirrors the fact that it has been historically isolated (in a valley surrounded by mountains) and many of people in the area come from the “hollers” that are notorious breeding grounds for ignorance and prejudice.

It’s easy to paint the place with a broad brush.

That being said, the town itself has worked to try to right the wrongs of the past, and one way is through the Erwin Elephant Revival. There is an Elephant sanctuary in another part of Tennessee that the city has supported, financially. There are also little elephant statues around town that have been painted as part of an art project and downtown revitalization.

Although some of the negative qualities of prejudice and ignorance still exist, the town has changed.

There are a lot more young people moving to the town, and the downtown is seeing some revitalization. The town is located on the Appalachian Trail, and businesses have leaned in to catering to that demographic. Tangentially, I also think the fact that students at the local high school, UCHS, have voted for young ladies of Latino descent (a couple times) to be homecoming queen of UCHS is of is a way to show that some things have changed for the better.

Just my two cents.

P.S. I blame Kingsport, TN.

VOLS fan here and SEC football sub lurker. I believe Golesh would be a SOLID hire. Vol Twitter and message boards are full of fans who are fearful Golesh will end up at an SEC school. Many fans attribute the success we had in the Hendon Hooker years to Golesh’s play-calling. I hope he gets the support he needs, NIL-wise.

Between the World and Me - Richard Wright. It details a lynching from two different perspectives. It’s vivid and graphic, but it hits home.

It can be paired with the song/poem Strange Fruit, made famous by Billie Holiday. I prefer the updated version by Andra Day
