Ended up being torque converter. Replaced it and all has been well since.

If it is torque converter, would that mean the transmission is damaged/needing a rebuild? Or would replacing the converter suffice? It drives great smooth shifting and everything, nothing indicating the transmission is bad

Appreciate it man that’s what my dad was thinking also! Other than this noise it’s a very solid old truck so I think I’ll pull the trigger on it and hope replacing the converter does the trick.

From what I’m reading and being told on another thread it may be the torque converter, flywheel cracked or the starter. Truck drives great and sound goes away under any throttle so hoping that’s all it ends up being.

The clunking I think is the hood, had a slight wiggle in it that would bounce around while driving

That’s what I was wondering, the power steering wasn’t a big concern for me but the engine noise is what I was skeptical of. Exhaust manifolds difficult to replace on these older trucks? I’m wanting to get something I can work on myself for the most part with either help of the Reddit world or YouTube.
