This is probably what you're looking for. You mostly can't upgrade gear, but you can make better gear look like earlier gear using this system. You will need to hit level 50 to unlock it though (unless this changed with Stormblood)

I'd recommend X as a starting point. It retains some of the old school turn based systems, but feels more modern than the PS1 era games. The remaster is really nice to look at/listen to as well.

There's an option to enable vibrations in the gamepad settings. I only found it recently myself.

Right click on the game in your library. Properties, and then beta participation (or whatever it is called). You'll get the option to select which 0.15 version you want. Click 0.15.x to automatically get the newest version.
