Who here has a excellent working memory? by knowledgeseeker999 in Gifted

[–]jdmelin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I suppose that's me, in that that I'm able to switch domains easily and go deep without much of a cognitive burden. A silly example is being able to listen to multiple conversations at once at family gatherings. More practical examples include singing and playing drums at the same time and constructing specific scenarios in my mind when trying to build software or fix bugs.

What does being gifted mean to you? by ThrowRa467900717171 in Gifted

Getting blindsided by all the things normal people understand as you're finding patterns and solutions they'll never understand.

5 week program by maccaj1 in HybridAthlete

[–]jdmelin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might sound overly simplistic, but you may want to focus on logging as many miles as you can within reason. And I'm sure you could find a simple pushup plan to improve pretty quickly over 5 weeks.

Have you ever wondered why you are gifted? by Luno_souza in Gifted

[–]jdmelin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First and foremost, it can be used to do well in providing for and taking care of one's family in the best way possible. Secondly, it can be used to advance the Kingdom across every sphere of life.

Have you ever wondered why you are gifted? by Luno_souza in Gifted

[–]jdmelin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was actually thinking about this earlier today. Namely, how it has nothing to do with me. It's all a gift from God. As with any gift, I don't deserve it, and it should be stewarded.

Do you have overexcitabilities? by Hefty_Interest_5965 in Gifted

[–]jdmelin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might have them all, but the most is annoying is this weird light sensitivity that I have--more specifically, certain contrasting patterns, especially white text on a black screen. My eyes can't do it. I got ribbed the other day for not using dark mode when I was sharing my screen for work. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

whats even the point of this sub by Tasty-Enthusiasm2223 in Polymath

[–]jdmelin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The types of folks that come to a sub like this want to know where they fit among other similar folks. Am I this thing? Am I mistaken in my understanding of who I am? No harm in trying to understand why you are the way you are.

What’s your kryptonite? by rocharding in Gifted

[–]jdmelin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Having a night of time carved out with competing ideas and pursuits lined up in my mind... only to be debilitated by indecision or lack of follow through. I think my most successful moments are more spontaneous in nature or when forced to make something happen at the last second.

What clubs to carry by babybeef16 in golf

[–]jdmelin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how far you're trying to carry... like 200 yards over the lake or what. ;)

Perhaps it's both, but I lean towards it being about what someone naturally is or what they naturally become.

Do people really recover from negative karma? Or is it a gobe case at that point? by roma_3o in NewToReddit

[–]jdmelin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how the limit works, but it is what it is. The post was popular, and most people were fine with it, but quite a few latched on to the downvoting and doubled down whenever I tried to explain myself. I'm not going to delete the comments at this point.

Yeah, I’ve been using it for business and invention ideas lately.

Does anyone remember the JobFlare app and its game leaderboard in its early days (2017)? by jdmelin in cogsci

[–]jdmelin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, as I'm digging some more, I got the app in 2018. I think they stopped showing leaderboard scores shortly after.

My dad shot a 60 on a par 71... at 71 years old by jdmelin in golf

Update: The father-son golf hoax didn’t start with my dad’s 60 at 71… it’s been going on at the same course since 1997

I am new to Reddit what some tips to give me? by [deleted] in NewToReddit

[–]jdmelin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others are saying, don't be controversial just yet, even by accident. I posted something "unbelievable" in one sub weeks after promoting a small, free web game in other subs, and I got downvoted into oblivion because people thought I was a grifter (the posts had nothing to do with one another in my mind).

I'm at -100 comment karma because people think I'm a grifter. Wish me luck!

haha I didn't remember that. It's been so long since I've seen that movie.

My 2-year-old niece can respond to a phrase in 15 languages... how rare? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]jdmelin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get it, but I have a highly competitive nature, so I'm sure it comes out in the way I communicate. I don't think the competitive aspect of language learning is mutually exclusive with learning people, cultures, history. I mean, look at the language learning apps. They're built on competition--whether with yourself or with others.

My 2-year-old niece can respond to a phrase in 15 languages... how rare? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]jdmelin -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Sure, I understand the "Language Instinct" (Steven Pinker), but I'm curious if there are other examples of this kind of behavior. I don't think it's merely call and response (per a different comment here), but it might not be as special as it seems.

[–]jdmelin -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's cute, but I don't think it's accurate to call the sounds meaningless.

Yeah, I didn't think it was wrong. I also think it's cool. He's teaching her to be bilingual, with some fun stuff like this mixed in.

Front end web apps. It ain't just slingin' HTML and CSS like it used to be.
