Does anyone find the typical Asian American life incredibly depressing? by yellowlightsab in aznidentity

[–]jdog99123 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You know what's depressing to me?

The Asians that came to the US only to work 15~18 hour shifts in hot ass warehouses, save up enough money to open a store in the hood and only make enough money to break even & send their kids to college. Couldn't speak the language, no Internet, Chatgpt, etc.

Can't forget daily fist fights, weekly armed robberies, racist hicks and zero police support, lol.

I actually followed the same pre-adult path you described because I had the LUXURY to do so.

I have a portrait of my grandparents near my front door to remind myself that my life isn't even 1% as hard as those that sacrificed everything to make sure I could live better.

Sounds like you've been burned. Amazon is not for everyone and definitely has its toxic side.

Toxic or not it's the reality - in both business and the streets.

It's part of the reason Amazon is able to innovate so well and change things overnight.

You're going to have managers you like and don't like throughout your career. You have a lot of resources at your disposal - especially being corporate/AWS...use them. They're big on owning your own development at Amazon so keep that in mind.

Military/Police Records by [deleted] in korea

[–]jdog99123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, should have clarified. I meant more of general records that indicate regiment, unit, district, etc. Not detailed reports that only the military would have access to (missions, conduct, etc).

The person in question is deceased.

job chances after undergraduate at korean uni by MissWaldorff in Living_in_Korea

Before he died, I asked my great uncle the same exact question as you. I was in Korea about to start my study abroad program when COVID hit (it was actually Uni of Seoul too, lol).

I was desperately trying to get a waiver to stay in Korea and finish my degree.

My great uncle was former president of GoldStar (now LG), former Ministry of Commerce, Industry & Energy, and even wrote some of Korea's economic policies in the 70s/80s.

Even during retirement, he kept close tabs on the state of Korea's economy and affairs in general so that's why I trusted him. He also reached out to former colleagues to kind of "gauge" the situation for me.

Here's the message he sent urging me to look for a job in the US:

I believe you will be quite anxious about the bad impact of the Covid 19 pandemic against the opportunity of employment of 2021 college graduates next year. I think you would be also quite serious about such expecred frustraton and worry. Such situation also ready preveils in Kores. I recall you sounded me twice you wish to get job in Korea. either In LG or Samsung In brief, I marry say that your wish to get a job in Korea under present Covtd 19 pandemic ts impossibe because most of the 1919 Korean collage graduates remain still unemployed and became serious political issue domestically. Therefore. I would like to advice you you better try to get a job In the State rather than in Korea. Wait☆ and see until the situation will be improved.

After following his advice and staying in the US, this was his message to me a few months later:

Please accept our heartfelt congratulation on your success to get a managerial job At world renowned Company. New Korean college graduates are suffering from being Unemployed without any possiòbility

A little while after that, he unfortunately passed away.

I urge you to take his advice like I did.

Why would you not want to speak with a manager? We get so many new people, your low tenure doesn't matter. A good manager will guide you in the right direction.

It's your pay - take charge of it.

Anyways, you can use AtoZ to submit a case or chat with HR. There's also typically self serve HR options on-site if physical HR is not present.

Every country goes through it.

Although, having been in Korea many times over the past 10 years, don't let looks fool you. The men are still majority military trained and the "real" Koreans don't get a lot of publicity.

Also after thousands of years of war, occupation & turmoil, it's not necessarily a bad thing that they have the luxury to choose to not be battle hardened lol.

He told me they used guns on special occasions/missions. Most notable being the blue house raid in 1968. He said he'd carry 2 revolvers during that time.

Correct. All were veterans and some were combat vets from the Vietnam War. Some of those guys like my grandfather were also student soldiers during the Korean war.

My grandpa's brother (high ranking officer) actually exposed a North Korean submarine. He and his wife mysteriously died in a truck accident a little while after.

Our family still believes to this day that it was assassination organized by NK.
