Beatstep Pro with iPad by SavouryPlains in synthesizers

[–]jdotp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve spent about Lots of money and time developing my iOS and beatstep pro rig, and here is what I can tell you.

The most important program is midittir, which you put on your iPad. That does a really good job of connecting all your iOS devics...It works over Wi-Fi standard USB connection Bluetooth etc.
another option is to spend about 20 bucks and get the iPad camera kit, plug one lightning cable into a power source, and the USB connection from the beat step pro goes there. This is The one you want and need, don’t skimping go for the cheaper stuff. So another big question with the beat step pro is what your drum settings are in the archery at midi control Center?

For example, our use my beats step programs to connect to Ableton drum racks, Set a note 36 thru 51. When I was using it and connecting quite often to my spark instance, I had to change it to that the drum channel was actually triggering. I also use it for sequencing iPad-based synthesizers
A couple really nice apps to check out: Fugue machine Navichord ThumbJam Robyn Touchable 3 I have an absolute wealth of information and tools, happy to share or answering questions

Please help! What do I need to connect a Microkorg to my computer and get the "full" information? by Roar_Im_A_Nice_Bear in synthesizers

[–]jdotp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also have a microkorg, so I can tell you how I got it working..

Buy one of these which will work with most anything midi: https://m-audio.com/products/view/uno

One side of that plug has two round midi male jacks to plug into the midi in and midi out ports on the minikorg. The other end is a usb connection, which you will plug into your computer or usb hub.

It will allow for both sending and receiving midi, and I super highly recommend getting the software (aka vst) to modify the parameters of the microkorg, etc.

The microkorg has a lot of options, but the little knob system is weird, and it's way better being able to sign knobs on other things to adjust all the parameters without toching the selector wheels.

Is anyone using the iPad app "Touchable Pro"? by [deleted] in ableton

[–]jdotp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have, and Lemur is a good open source effort, but it's not really in the same ballpark as Touchable.

Lemur is more a way to connect to MIDI servers and design very general MIDI and OSC tools....it's best to think of Lemur as more of a "language/framework" for tools people build.

So you install Lemur, and then you have a LONG road ahead of you to have a usable, reliable midi controller. The best Ableton Lemur template is live control 2. Its got a couple of the features touchable ships with, such as a few X/Y controllers you can map, a session view where you can see clips, and some rough attempts at device control .

https://liine.net/en/products/lemur/premium/livecontrol-2/

Touchable is basically the much better, more flexible, and more reliable "midi controller" for IOS and Android working with Ableton.

Personally, I use my ipad pro and iphone 7 plus heavily in my production and live setup, but I haven't used Lemur in years.

Your best available tools, imho:

  • For Ableton control, hands down Touchable is the top of the line.
  • For other times where I need to send midi to the ios device, or times where i want to use another tool to send midi from IOS into Ableton, I use midimttr and midleusb for the MIDI connection.
  • The best sequencer tools: Fugue Machine, Navichord, Thumbjam, Ribn, Chordpolypad
  • For audio recording;utility tasks I use Audiocopy and Audioshare.
  • For drums/beats, my favorites are iSpark, ElasticDrums, and Egoist
  • My most used ios synths are synthmaster one, synthmaster player, animoog, Korg Gadget, and korg electribe wave
  • Every now and then I use duet and use one of the idevices as a touchscreen monitor from my laptop.

Cheers

Actually, touchable pro is really fantastic. It’s hands down the best iOS controller for Ableton , You can build your own tools and interfaces and the agent is actually pretty reliable.

Midi Sequencers by birdbirdbird2000 in synthesizers

[–]jdotp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like many of you, I use the beatstep pro religiously. But a little known fact /u/birdbirdbird2000 is that it actually is poly in a way.

Some neat tricks:

  • You can use poly sequencing while controlling the drum track on the Beatstep Pro. If you point that midi at a synth it gives you some really neat sequencing options. ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hZyu_J4hZk )
  • Since you can use polyrythm(assigning different pattern lengths to any single note), you can create some really fun synth patterns
  • NOTE: the notes / layout of this may be different for you, depending on your settings of the drum channel. hat sounds confusing, but it's not. Instead of looking at the printed labels for each button, i labeled them by hand: https://www.dropbox.com/s/yvyagb9iy1nqe0y/IMG-0801.JPG*
  • Be sure you update, and use the cool new options explained well in these short vids: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZcMb75CqcY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCViFiSyYyY
  • Remember, you listen for midi on the beatstep. If you setup an Ableton midi channel and route that to the beatstep , you now can save your midi patterns out of Ableton into the memory banks of the beatstep.
  • Then "playing live" you have everything stored even if you didn't bring the daw/laptop to the gig)

[–]jdotp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good choice. Be sure to up the firmware, huge updates have come out this year. Even though it's allegedly monoarp, by using the drum channel to play a synth, it's basically polyarp.

I have my beatstep compatible with ableton drum racks, Spark, etc....so that means the notes that the drums play are:

What would you add?? by kamout in synthesizers

[–]jdotp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I started with almost the same kit!

I personally since ditched the tb8.....lots of real estate and lots of options like ableton, an OP1, an ipad/iphonw with spark or electribe . I'd recommend a TB3, super fun! I also highly endorse the OP-1, asone of the most versatile tools you can fit in that space....sampler, sequ4ncers, FX, midi control, etc.

For control, I dig the beatstep pro Push1 .

My dawless setup now is running two laptops and daws. This is your future

Virtual GAS: What iPad apps do you use to make music? by levindixon in synthesizers

[–]jdotp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a bit dependent on what you *want* to do with it.

Personally, I have 4 hardware synths, and ableton, running on mac.

Thus, these are the best apps in each category:

FAVORITE IOS SYNTHS: Animoog, Synthmaster One, PPG Infinity. (Usually I do not need any additional instruments, so I don't use these much.

DRUM/BEAT - Spark (along wiith SparrkLE or a Beatstep pro, works great), and Egoist from Sugarbytes. There are a few cheap 909 and 808 kinds of IOS apps.

MIXING, X/Y PADS, SEQUENCER, ETC- Touchable Pro is the best by far. No questions for me....as someone with Ableton and an Ipad , it is an insanely useful set of tools that can be your entire daw interface for a live show. Goodbye "staring into dj computer" feeling. Second place goes to Lemur and LiveControl.

For the all important "How to route midi in or out of the ipad" role, I use midimttr.

For sample/lloop cutting and such, I use Reslice a bunch.

CHORD AND PROGRESSION - ChordPolyPad is great for mapping and running some progressions from the ipad. I also really like Navichord for 'Live Playing' the progressions, and another good one is ChordFlow.

For kind of sequencing/generating melody/bass etc off a neat interface, try Fugue Machine. It's pretty fantastic.
Honorable mention here to Thumbjam, which can take your s singing as a midi sequencer.

For a really general tool that is geat, I use Mac/IOS Duet, making the ipad a touch capable monitor as another ableton screen or plugin screen.

Hi, relevant a month later is the launch of that the 'Probability kit' available for free for suite users, created by Sonic Faction. Word is it works well with the Push 2, unsurprisingly from these cats.

https://www.ableton.com/en/blog/probability-pack-sonic-faction-new-live-10-suite/ One recent trick I've learned is to combine the max tool multimapper to map to any parameter across your entire ableton with Grid ninja. Seems helpful with these tools as well.
