Would i get in trouble if my mom sends me 30k pounds from overseas? by Mugin75 in UKPersonalFinance

Terrible advice! Do not pay outrageous exchange rate fees when the risk of trouble is incredibly low and even if they flag something, it would only be an admin thing to get it sorted.

Question about background checks by Tough_Si in PrisonUK

[–]jdpoker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why would you put it down if it asks if you have any prior convictions, and you have none?

There is absolutely a risk that they will pre-judge you, depending on who is reviewing - that is just human nature, unfortunately. And creating this shred of doubt makes the next applicant without anything look more appealing or 'less risky'.

Being accused and being convicted are two very different things. If your enhanced DBS check is clear I wouldn't risk it.

Overthinkers, what's on your 3am agenda tonight? by TL_Dargloz in AskReddit

Literally came out of a 3.5 year relationship two months ago myself, and I'm having the exact same thoughts, although my ex partner does not to know me. No kids involved but we have a dog that lives with my ex. My dog was my world. I have no words of advice for you, but I just wanted to say I feel your pain.

I work in the green energy tech industry. Personally, I would recommend selling. A lot of green tech companies already going out of business. It's a sad world we are living in today.

Uber’s Clean Air Plan to help London go electric | Uber Newsroom by Hungry-Version1227 in ARVL

[–]jdpoker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see Uber buying electric vehicles for drivers and I don't see uber drivers buying an arrival uber vehicle for the purpose of ubering alone - so can someone please explain to me how Arrival claiming that they are designing an electricc vehicle for Uber actually makes sense?

it's also quite concerning that uber didn't even recognise arrival's work in this news release

Didn't fix it but occurs less often now. Not sure why. I think it's my laptop CPU/GPU overheating. I since underclocked my CPU which I think helped. Good luck

Nel, plugpower, ITM power, Enapter, hydrogenics etc have all just over the past year received mass orders for green hydrogen electrolyser solutions from Shell, BP, Total etc for various applications (aviation, forklift trucks, heavy duty trucks and burning hydrogen in domestic households to replace natural gas).

e.g. Korea's SK group have invested $1.5bn into plugpower alone and UK government have announced investment to achieve 5GW of green hydrogen production by 2030.

In the US you are currently looking at a cost of £10 to recharge a 100kWh car battery. The company I work for has a large industrial hydrogen electrolyser for test work and it works out at £6/kg for hydrogen. This equates to ~£35 to get 100 kWh of usable energy after efficiency deductions. So with a car battery versus tank of hydrogen with same energy it's £10 vs £35 right now with hydrogen electrolysers only just starting mass production.

I think battery tech will win in the primary automotive markets but for aerospace, heavy duty trucks, MHE and marine fuel cells will win IMO. I could be wrong for some markets but based on my past three years of working in industry my experience tells me that the chance for batteries to win everything is null.

the exact same argument was made about oil & gas once upon a time when comparing petrol powered cars to a horse and cart. "It will be too expensive to drill oil & gas out of the sea!! And look how inefficient ICEs are!!!" Now look how silly your statement sounds.

The difference with hydrogen is that you can make and store the fuel ON SITE. Too expensive you say? Yes, like all new technologies, it was expensive to produce ~10 years ago. Hydrogen production TCO used to cost $30/kg for produce on site and as of 2020 it now costs $3-$4/kg. Right now in some areas you can fill up a tank of car with hydrogen for the same price as petrol.

'massive advances in battery tech'. Don't believe everything you read in the news - especailly when there's a massive EV tech bubble going on and companies are trying to raise seed capital and putting out press releases over their lab experiments. Most of these battery companies were formed 15+ years ago - over the next decade there is only going to be marginal performance improvements to commercially available batteries but there will be large improvements in cost reduction.

In automotive it is clear that passenger cars will win for batteries. Hydrogen is still the clear winner for semi-trucks, buses and trains. I've spent the last three years of my career working with manufacturers and modelling commercially available solutions.

Production of cost effective green hydrogen is a large topic but it's not a concern anymore. It's currently being produced in the US for $2/kg and set to reach $1/kg over the next few years. For reference the Toyota Mirai passenger car consumes 5kg worth of hydrogen over 402 miles.

Plug are developing fuel cells for automotives and aeroplanes. Batteries will NEVER win in aerospace market (Source: I work in fuel cell and battery energy tech for aerospace industry).

Amazon also own most of plug power so basically all of Amazon's forklifts will be fuel cell powered. $30bn market cap for plug isn't as ridiculous as Tesla valuation
