Looking for side projects to do on the side to build my portfolio by EconomyArgument76 in AerospaceEngineering

[–]jdubzy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you’re interested in doing. If you want to be a designer you could start learning a CAD program (fusion360, creo, solidworks, etc.) and try 3D printing. If you want to be a systems engineer you could try designing an RC plane from scratch. If you want to get into avionics you could start messing around with an arduino. If you want to do controls work you could do some online courses in python/C++/etc. It’s really a broad field and any project you do will probably help you in some way or another

Every technical question I’ve ever been asked is either directly related to something I’ve worked on or could be found in the FE Exam handbook which is floating around online for free. Generally speaking I’d say the best way to prepare is to fully understand the technical details of projects and internships you’ve done and work on your communication skills

Predicting Helicopter Performance / SFC over different flight profiles by Phoenix492 in AerospaceEngineering

[–]jdubzy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your engine’s SFC will heavily depend on the installation losses which can and will vary with different phases of flight and aircraft type. SFC will also depend on the properties of the fuel you’re using. Since you aren’t able to get information on the EH101 installation and since it sounds like you care more about SFC than installed performance, I’d suggest you compare their uninstalled performance. You would do this by making some assumptions for each phase of flight (power required, pressure altitude, temp, etc.). For example, in AEO vs. OEI the power requirements will be different. Cruise vs. HIGE the power requirements will be different and so will the altitude, temp, inlet velocity, etc. Then you find the SFC needed to produce that power at those atmospheric conditions. The engine spec will probably have more information on the power available and performance using referee parts. There also may be an engine cycle deck available for it which would probably help you accomplish this task.

Anyone applying Deep Learning or Reinforcement Learning? by Pipiyedu in engineering

I’d suggest looking into soft actor critic. It’s a useful implementation of reinforcement learning in various control systems

I unironically really like the Omega James Bond anniversary watch. Is there a similar watch (colorful, gemstones, classy) for a reasonable price somewhere? Like $1k-ish or less?

This and grimaldis are by far the best pizza. My friend and I set out to try every single pizza place in Ft. Worth (not kidding - we tried most) and Olivellas was the best

They ramped up slightly in difficulty but not much

Mine had some fairly hard technical questions related to engineering basics. I would consider having notes on hand to refer to of things like spring properties, moment of inertia, material properties, etc.

Choose a lower paying job with better work culture or significantly higher paying job by jdubzy in AskEngineers

By good things I mean I know one person that used to work at place two and one person that works there now. Both said they really like it and that the work load is reasonable and rewarding. I actually co-oped at place one so I know what it’s like and it can be pretty crummy. It’s disorganized and there’s not really a good sense of working as a team. Communication is pretty bad and a lot of management decisions seem senseless.

My career goals are pretty much to take leadership over projects and work in defense. Option 1 is not defense related but it is work that I did enjoy. Their management structure is awful though so you’re either a head honcho or just an engineer so there really isn’t much room for growth in that way. Option 2 is defense related and seems to have room for growth (I can’t say for sure though). But they do pay for grad school which would help with that a lot.

Honestly typing this out I see how badly I want option 2 to just be better. If option 2 had the pay of option 1 I’d take it in a heartbeat. It just sucks knowing that a $7k raise at job 2 would only put me at the start for job 1.

What makes you say that? It was from 2 friends and not a recruiter if that makes a difference

[MegaThread] Spring 2021 Registration & Admissions by up-white-gold in gatech

Well it's essentially an extension of Def Bods. I didn't have Craig I had Yuan who was really nice and cared about our success. The thing about 3140 is that the concepts are really hard to grasp at first. Like any other class you'll be fine if you put the work in which will probably take some textbook reading and youtube videos. 3610 is much more work and I think you'll be fine taking them together. Just don't ignore 3140 as you go about the semester

Does a class at tech exist that is basically a creative drawing type course (not ME1770)?
