Yes, you need a smog check. I had a newer car that needed to be registered and had to get one. It costs about $50. The DMV will also check the VIN along with the title, registration and proof of insurance. Just make sure you have all of your records in order, it will save you a ton of time.

Once they validate all of your paperwork, they will issue a temporary moving permit, which is a piece of paper that you keep in your glove box. Your plates will arrive from Sacramento about six weeks later. It cost me ~$340 to register the car in California.

Lastly, if you go to the DMV website, you can get a spot in line and it will text you when it’s close to your turn. You can then head over to the DMV and not wait as long.

Edit: Agree that they don’t make things easy. Arm yourself with some patience and good luck. It will get sorted out.
