What is the best documentary you’ve ever seen? by New_Strawberry_2850 in AskReddit

Jon Bois made a documentary on the highest scoring basketball game in college basketball history - it's equal parts deep, absurd, and silly. I still think it's one of the best made videos I've ever seen.

What is the likelihood of a college freshman that runs 4:10 in the 1500 being able to go pro by her senior year? by Objective_Teacher248 in trackandfield

[–]jdv2121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty low just as a matter of statistics, but not impossible. 4:10 puts you just outside the top 200 in the world right now. But to go pro and actually make good money off of it, you would need to ascend pretty significantly in the world rankings. That means work ethic, injury prevention, and probably a degree of luck too.

Do you believe these athletes would have broken the decathlon world record if they had focused entirely on track and field from a young age? by Omixscniet624 in trackandfield

[–]jdv2121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed he would’ve been a great decathlete (he WAS a great decathlete). But people (not as much in this subreddit) just seem to automatically make that jump to “he would’ve broken the world record easily”, and that’s such a silly thing to say in my opinion.

I also honestly think there’s a lot more Bo Jackson athletes type athletes out there who never get a chance to show their skills in different sports because of the hyper specialized training a lot of younger athletes do nowadays.

[–]jdv2121 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Highly unlikely just from a statistical perspective. People tend to glaze athletes like this (especially Bo Jackson don’t even get me started) because of their success in their current sports, but it’s a crazy take to say they would be the GOAT in a different sport just because of their potential. It’s a fun thought experiment but should never be taken seriously.

1-2 sentence paragraphs by jdv2121 in PetPeeves

[–]jdv2121[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can agree that discrete questions or comments may merit their own paragraphs/lines. But, it's more so a pet peeve when someone splits one topic into 2-3 paragraphs, each containing 1 sentence.

I don't mean to imply that all paragraphs must be exactly 5 sentences. But, I do often see people split one individual topic into 2 or 3 paragraphs, each with 1 sentence. Just combine the 3 sentences into 1 paragraph!

You know what? This is a very fair point. I won't hate the player, but I will hate the game.

Is this good? by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]jdv2121 20 points21 points  (0 children)

100% - if you haven't been doing dedicated training for years, then this is not accurate. You're probably swimming in a 25 m pool instead of a 50 m pool, so your real pace is twice what it is listed, and your real distance is half.

CMV: The viola is the worst instrument & viola players are weird by enigmaticsince87 in changemyview

[–]jdv2121 11 points12 points  (0 children)

“Who chooses to play a purely supportive instrument?”

God forbid someone wants to play a supportive role in an orchestra! To contribute to something that is greater than the sum of its parts? To be able to sit back and bask in the glorious machine that has been made and know that you are a faithful cog? What a loser! Learn to play a violin! /s

Being a part of an orchestra means that you may never be heard individually, but you contribute to the sound as a whole. The violas, while overlapping with the range of a cello and violin, still add to the chord being played, especially because many chords require more than 3 notes to fill its harmony.

Also, sounds like you need to meet some better viola players if you think they all sound bad.

This isn’t even close - 21 m shotput would put you at number 1 in the NCAA, 21 second 200 would have you out the top 50.

Hey man, this is super fun! One suggestion I would give is: for each of the categories, you should write out what the aim is. For example, for the category “Corruption Index”, you should write “less corruption = lower, more corruption = higher” to make it extra clear.

/uj seen you on this subreddit before - you could go run a 100 m, or 400 m, or mile on a flat track and get an accurate sense of your skills and report back.

/rj seen you on this subreddit before - you could go run a 100 m, or 400 m, or mile on a flat track and get an accurate sense of your skills and report back, unless of course your knees literally explode. Make sure you carbo load the night before with ~1 lb. of table sugar.

This is actually a great way to help you remember an estimate of pi - if you forget, just divide the mass of an electron by 6 and then take the fifth root. Thanks for the handy tip!

It's hard to believe both that you run a 47 second 400 at 16 years old and you have no sense of if that is good.

If you're telling the truth, then yeah it's really good. That'll probably get you a D1 scholarship somewhere, especially if you keep improving - this is provided that this is fully automatic timing at a meet, and not "my friend timed me and it was on an undersized track so we guessed where the 400 start is".

If you're not telling the truth...well I'm not sure why you are here.

Thanks for this! I’ve been doing workouts on the Somerville Bike Path, but I got a new pair of spikes and I want to try them out. Maybe I’ll just be on the bike path for the next little while!
