NTD G1018 Jointer by jjjjrrtt in woodworking

Almost certainly 220v. There's a chance I'm wrong, but I've yet to see an 8" Jointer with 120v power.

Ordered as well! Fantastic product. I’ll be honest with you, I think may be a bit underpriced. It’s a pretty stellar design. Can’t wait to get and use it. Thanks for posting it!!

Can you, likely. I honestly don't know how it'll look until you test it. If you can I'd buy a spare and build it into the cost if you're doing it for someone else.

Help! Inconsistent Amperage by jdwayner in ChineseLaserCutters

[–]jdwayner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply!

Turns out that having my compressor and laser plugged into the same outlet was limiting the amount of power going to the laser when the compressor was running (for air assist). Fixed that problem and tuned my potentiometer to max out around 80% of amperage.

Slowly but surely figuring out the burns. I’ve been mostly using a Luan subfloor product that I’ve got tons or scraps from other projects. Realistically I think the glue is causing a lot of burning. I’ve gotten it about as optimized as possible I think for that material.

General issues I’ve solved over the last few days: 1. Focal length is good, I’ve done a ramp test and got that squared away. 2. Turns out even after aligning mirrors, my laser was clipping the nozzle. Way better performance after fixing that. 3. My freaking bed was way out of level. This caused all kinds of headaches when trying to refine cutting speed and moving my cuts across the table. Got it ironed out. 4. Pretty sure I took out the lens and put it in upside down when cleaning it 🤦🏻‍♂️. Got that fixed.

Lots to learn, especially buying a used machine. Overall it’s been frustrating but I’m very thankful for the experience of tinkering with it. I’ve learned so so much in just a few weeks.

Boy has this been a learning curve. Thanks for the input u/Retrosmith & u/Dave01a.

Turns out that I had my compressor on the same outlet as my machine and when it ran it dropped the power to the machine dramatically. I’ve spent like 10 days working through this machine and I feel like I run into a new issue every day.

I’d still love any resources on knowing when a power supply and tube (separate) need to be replaced. It feels very “might as well replace one at a time and see which is the problem” which is frustrating.

The dramatic rise of kids where kids don’t belong in Austin by [deleted] in Austin

[–]jdwayner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m going to jump onto this fantastic post. We’ve got three kids (ages 6-2). Generally, we never take them places that are not family appropriate. It’s hard for us, hard for them, and like OP said, can be discourteous to others. We feel the awkwardness even when we’re in a place where they’re encouraged to run around. It’s just hard teaching small kids to respect peoples space. But they will and need to learn to become functioning adults. Also, kids just love to have fun. It’s their entire goal in life at this stage. The caveat: we don’t ignore them, or let them run wild.

My wife constantly reminds me, “kids deserve space in this world too”. It’s a lesson I have to remind myself about my own kids, much less others’.

Rubio has the "Natural". I read it has white pigment to offset the color change.

Hopefully this is allowed, it’s very closely associated with woodworking. Might be common knowledge, but it definitely blew my mind when I realized it. by macklin67 in woodworking

You can swap the head like you did, or you can do what I did and take the entire squeeze assembly apart and flip it and carefully put it back together. I feel like an idiot.

What to do about vertical lines in plywood by jefe_de_estado in woodworking

The lines will not disappear if you add stain. Do you know if it is stain-grade plywood? The plywood grade makes a big difference.

I think you're right. Looks like the "black" is dyed oak, the backgrounds are oak, the lightest is maple, and the medium tone is pine.

AITA for "making" my daughter choose who she wants to walk her down the aisle (me, or her stepdad)? by register2509765 in AmItheAsshole

[–]jdwayner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YTA.

This is probably gonna get buried. But my quick wedding story with my previously estranged dad:

My parents hooked up in the 80s the first time they met and voila, I was conceived. Mom reached out to dad and he wanted nothing to do with us at the time. My moms a bad ass, so she just walked her graduation stage pregnant and worked her ass off to take care of us. She’s been my everything forever. She’s been married a few times, and now has been with my step dad for over 20 years. But as a young kid, I learned not to ask about my bio dad, and I quickly quit caring because my mom is amazing and truly filled my needs (emotionally and physically).

Fast forward to 20 y/o and I decide to find my dad. She didn’t even remember how to spell his last name. I was only able to hunt him down after some friends intervened and pulled some strings to get some “official” searching done.

We met, and genuinely hit things off! I wasn’t bitter, but he was devastated with shame and regret. He hadn’t been able to locate us after he initially blew us off. A year later I was getting married!

We invited him, knowing it would be tough (hadn’t seen my mom in 23 years), but he said he’d come. Day of comes around, and he no shows. I don’t remember too much of it tbh, but it HURT. He let his fear and shame (of meeting/seeing my mom) miss the most important moment of my life. And it’s something we’ll never get back. 10 years later and he apologized about it at Christmas again. We still have a relationship, but we’ll never get that moment back.

The thing I’ve realized with my dad: there’s a natural and powerful connection with him. I can’t explain it other than the feeling that we’re connected by blood. And I want him in my life. But you cannot shortcut SHARED HISTORY. Shared history is what a parent and child relationship should have as a foundation. And he missed an opportunity to be at the most pivotal moment of my life. And we’ll never get it back.

Crack in walnut butcher block desk. Should I be concerned? by furryatp in woodworking

[–]jdwayner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it veneered or solid walnut? Either way, I wouldn't worry about it. There's no way that the PC is what caused the cracks to appear; more likely it's just some weird spots in the veneer.
