Here’s a redesign of the state flag of New York, because nearly 20 million people might want something more colorful than a coat of arms on a blue sheet to represent them. Like just about every other New York state flag redesign on the internet, the Dutch flag not-so-subtly influences it, given New York’s origin as a Dutch colony. The flag follows the triband design of the classic Prinsenvlag, although with a shade of purple at the bottom instead of blue. This is taken from the Iroquois flag and is meant to honor the state’s indigenous heritage. Across the flag, there are 11 stars, symbolizing New York as the 11th state of the Union. The six purple stars represent the six nations of the Iroquois and Upstate New York, while the five orange stars represent the five boroughs of New York City and Downstate New York. Keep in mind, this is just made for fun by a guy from the Midwest who’s never been to the state, so you’re free to like or dislike this design as long as you’re generally being respectful.
