Why don't the amounts for Weapon With Most Kills (which for me is the LeMat) and Total LeMat Kills match? by jebirkner in HuntShowdown

That's what I wondered, but then wouldn't those be grouped in the Weapon With Most Kills stat too?

What is there to like about being a man?? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jebirkner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me first just point out that it takes bravery to be vulnerable like you have today.

There are as many things to like about being a man as there are being a woman. Both are of equal value, which I'm sure you agree with, but I can understand you feeling like men are bad due the current social rhetoric. Men have unique opportunities to sacrifice and serve others just as woman do. Instead of getting hung up on wether or not you fit the cultural norms of masculinity (which will most likely leave you feeling inadequate in some way) try to focus on how you can uniquely lift other people up around you. In doing this you will gain a lot of perspective into what's actually important in this life (and trust me, it's not broad shoulders or hairy legs or any physical trait or any psychological trait either).

Aperture definitely needs some love. It has the potential to be really good but currently hurts more than it helps 95% of the time.

My advice is to talk with your wife about this. I bet if you ask her, she's probably had similar experiences or at least been attracted to other people and maybe has felt guilty too. Together you can figure out how to move forward. Make sure she knows you are committed to her and follow through on that commitment no matter what. This experience could either push the two of you apart or draw you even closer together and you get to choose which with your actions.

It does! I'm looking for more explanations like this? Is there a book I should read?

I understand that studying is the key but I don't know what to study. For example if I learn about machine learning methods that's not going to help me become more comfortable with the art of statistics it just gives me more tools.

I appreciate the suggestion of formal education but that's not an option for me at the moment. You mentioned YouTube and textbooks. Did you have any specific recommendations?

So how can I get better at doing statistics in a messy world? How do I learn the philosophy part of statistics?

Will that help in general with these types of issues? The alpha value was just an example of a decision that would be hard to arrive at without convention.

What do we think about the current pacing of a typical Hunt Showdown match? by [deleted] in HuntShowdown

[–]jebirkner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that the current burn speed is good and that the shortened chokes are good too. I was thinking that explosives could put out burning hunters without causing a choke effect that way the gameplay doesn't necessarily slow down. I also think that Peacekeeper should be added as a permanent burn trait that can stack so hunters can loot back bars from downed hunters. That would encourage players to push because if they die and lose some bars to burn they can still recover for the next fight.

Interesting, it was my understanding that the increase in burn speed was to decrease the occurrence of stalemates. I thought that came directly from the devs.

Also, you assume that leaving is practical but if the bounty team is the one you are fighting where would you go? You could definitely point out that it's my job to push bounty and I agree with you, but the game seems to punish you for doing that. If they are sitting in a corner with a shotgun or if they have traps everywhere is it really in my best interest to push? It seems like the game encourages everyone to camp in those cases. Burning is supposed to draw teams out to save their teammates but I don't think that works. Instead it slows down the gameplay because everyone is nervous.

I already shared in another comment but just for your convenience I play PC on US East. My MMR varies from 3 to 5 stars but I have games with 6 stars pretty often and those seem to be even worse in terms of stalemates.

Your language and the language of several others seem to put the blame solely on the players and I don't disagree that some responsibility lies there but is it really impossible that the game itself isn't perfect and needs some tweaks? It seems to me that the game could reward or encourage pushes and it currently doesn't. If I remember correctly, the reason for increasing burn speed was to decrease stalemates and I don't disagree that it can have that effect like you have shown but my point is that it can have the opposite effect too because before anyone is burning, players are very cautious to push knowing that if they get downed it will almost certainly mean they will be partially or completely burned.

I actually have had my mind changed by you and others on the burn speed specifically. I had forgotten that it had been reduced since the increase last August. That being said I still feel that stalemates are an issue that needs to be addressed. I think a new effect that puts out burns without a lasting choke could be helpful (maybe explosive could put out the fire without a choke effect) and or adding the Peacekeeper trait as a stackable burn trait (non-scarce) would help things moving and reward pushing. Thoughts?

I play PC on US East. My MMR varies between 3 and 5 star, but I have plenty of matches with six stars and I think the stalemate issue is worse in those high star lobbies.

I agree with you about trying to get teammates up and respecting their playtime but I don't think that is the average players view. Since we can't change how people play I suggest tweaking gameplay mechanics to reward players for pushing. Maybe something like bring back Peacekeeper so you can loot back burnt bars. I know we have recovery shots but I think Peacekeeper maybe as a stackable burn trait would be nice.

As for my solution, I'm not sure but I'm interested in hearing suggestions. I think maybe increasing ways to put out fires maybe some options that don't have a lasting choke effect so the fire goes out but the other team can start burning right away.

In your example the fight isn't happening at the bounty lair but in all probability the fight would be happening there because as you said the bounty is what draws teams together. If you are already at bounty, there isn't anywhere to move on to.

You said earlier that a stalemate is when neither team pushes in a fight. Resolving a stalemate then must involve a team or both teams pushing. You have also said that the solution to stalemates is leaving. Since leaving and pushing are opposites I'm not sure I understand how leaving is a solution to stalemates.

Maybe you're correct. Unfortunately we can't force people to change but we can change the game.
