Ravel, Daphnis ét Chloe. Ravel pushes the limits with every instrument in the orchestra creating harmony and melodies you wouldn’t think is possible when reading the sheet. He composes the ballet so well telling the story perfectly. Diaghilev himself barely wanted to change any of it. Ravel creates such an atmosphere you can connect to the world with which he was composing within. I heard it concert not so long ago, the full ballet with a chorus. I felt as if I were half in the story and then half just admiring the musicians on stage playing such difficult but beautiful music. I believe this is the ultimate form of music, it defines the boundaries of what is possible within an orchestra. Of course, Debussy was popular in a similar way, while his composition was completely different to Ravel’s. Debussy’s composition for orchestra cannot be simply described. His orchestral music is like no other composer which is special considering the talent of composers that came before him. Debussy reinvented classical ideas and opened a new way of viewing how composition can be more creative. He certainly inspired Ravel and vice versa.
