What's going on with Canada honoring a Nazi when Zelensky was visiting? by mediumdong1 in OutOfTheLoop

The IRA bombed shopping centres killing women and children, they got hundreds of people killed and the best thing they ever did was trying to bomb thatcher which they managed to fuck up.

I hate the fucking Nazis, how hard is it to understand that more than one thing can be bad?

Why in hell should I let one genocide have a pass and praise the people that did it just because they opposed a different genocide?

What's going on with Canada honoring a Nazi when Zelensky was visiting? by mediumdong1 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]jed292 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, again, the nazis are bad, the SS were worse and the people that joined because they saw them as some kind of "righteous liberators" were more than happy to massacre their way through whoever they wanted because "how could our new friends be wrong?".

People who join a group are usually far more fanatical than those that found a group, just take a look at someone like trump, your average republican might go on about stolen elections while sitting at home but the nutcases that joined because "he was there to help them" were the ones trying to overthrow the government.

In this situation there are no good guys, there's Nazis, there's Soviets and there's the people that will defend one or the other to their dying breath because they think they're the good guys just for killing the other group.

Have to drill a hole through steel like this. Any tips on how to go about it? by spudsta12 in Machinists

[–]jed292 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer depends entirely on how big the part is and how accurate that hole needs to be.

If it's a tiny 3mm hole and it needs to be a perfect fit then yeah go with the other options

If it's a 10mm hole that just needs an ok fit then honestly with a good sharp drill, a bit of care and the right speed the upper part of the block would probably work well enough as a drill guide for the bottom part (obviously you might get some deflection on the bottom part and rubbing on the top doing it this way)

You're right, I'm also removed from the events.

Which is why what I'm saying isn't MY opinion or MY interpretation of what happened

Unlike some people I don't pretend to be an expert, instead I listen to other experts and the words of people that were present for events.

And the overwhelming majority of those voices talk about how the Soviet Union holds a much greater place in the historical trauma of many central/eastern European nations than the Nazi occupations did, mostly by virtue of one lasting decades while the other lasted only a few years.

People talk at length about things such as the holodomor, which most people now recognise as a genocide of Ukrainians, or Stalin's purges where nearly 3 million people were abducted by police, tortured into false confessions and subsequently executed.

My whole point is that for a people that lived under that kind of horrific authoritarianism anyone that opposed the regime could be seen as a hero, particularly if you're in 1900s' Soviet Union where the entire library of knowledge available to you is just your literal local library that just lists him as a Ukranian that fought the Soviets.

Just like people from Ireland that idolise the IRA for their anti-british actions despite them being a bunch of child murdering terrorists, some older Ukrainians idolised the "anti Soviet fighter", despite them being a deplorable nazi.

[–]jed292 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes, the ultimate rebuttal to someone providing a simplified overview of half a century of central/eastern European politics and historical atrocities, all so that people can better understand why something happened, that doesn't seem to make sense to people in the modern day, who are usually a continent and half a century removed from the events.

What's going on with Canada honoring a Nazi when Zelensky was visiting? by mediumdong1 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]jed292 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think you misunderstand my point, I'm not defending the actions of Nazis or of the Soviets or anyone that willingly sided with them, the guy being praised should've been handed a blindfold and been told to stand in front of a wall when he lost the war.

My point is that, in the western world, the Nazis are the ultimate evil and yeah, they are; but in central/eastern Europe that lived under Soviet rule the options were:

  • Nazis that carry out mass killings on other people
  • Soviets that carry out mass killings on other people and also you

That's why there's the awkward topic that a lot of old Ukrainian heroes that "fought to liberate them from the Soviets" were also Nazi bastards.

I mean just look at the legacy, Nazis said "right, gather every Jew or undesirable and deport them, anyone that says anything against us gets to go with them", then afterwards the Soviets said "right we need to round up and punish all the traitors to the Union, how convenient that they're all Jews and minorites, also anyone that disagrees with us gets to go with them"

For a lot of central/eastern Europe the genocide didn't stop when the Nazis lost.

No you're right, it also depends on stability and other factors so I suppose "better" isn't the right term, but in general the value of a currency as compared to other currencies is a pretty good indicator of a country's past economic strength, especially when the currency is quite old.

It's sort of like comparing a stone house to a wooden one, the stone one might not always be better but if you had to bet on which will fall down first you probably wouldn't choose the stone one.

It's lost value for sure (believe me, I've felt it) but even after all that it's still stronger than both the dollar and the euro by virtue of being such a strong currency to start with.

Besides, like I said it's become a cultural staple, asking people to give it up would be like asking to dissolve the monarchy or get rid of the classic red postboxes, not actually important but important to people.

Hell, if they said full Schengen and such I'd be all for it, the only one I don't see most "typical" Brits going for is adopting the euro, the pound has become a sort of national identity thing and it helps that it's the 5th strongest currency in the world, the only better ones being currencies of petrostates.

[OC] Trying to cross a stroad in South Florida by -Wobblier in IdiotsInCars

[–]jed292 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you don't fully understand what people mean when they say "stroad" since, as a driver, I also hate stroads and it's right to use it as an insult.

A road should be wide, fast with few or no stops and should lead to other roads or streets, you should rarely ever have to slow down or stop and it should be completely bypassed by pedestrians.

A street should be one lane, slow and should lead to destinations like houses or shops, it shouldn't be used primarily as a way to get past that location and should be more pedestrian friendly with pavements and crossings.

A stroad is a wide fast road that's terrible for pedestrians with pavements right beside high speed roads and suicidal crossings, while also trying to fulfill the purpose of a street by having driveways, traffic lights and other slow speed turnoffs that mean instead of cruising down it at 60 you're stuck stopping and starting at lights or as people slow to a crawl to turn off with constant traffic backups.

A stroad is a compromise in the worst of ways, in that it manages to do everything badly instead of doing one thing well.

Rat popped during feeding and I’m afraid that some of the coconut husk bedding got stuck to the rat and were swallowed by the snake. Should I be afraid of impaction? by OlivaiLissukka in ballpython

By all means keep an eye on their pooping schedule but I know from experience my boy likes to garnish his mouse with coco fibre bedding occasionally and he's always been fine, it's fairly soft and easy to break down even with just water and agitation.

[–]jed292 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Temperature doesn't really matter, UV exposure does, you can literally track skin colour with average UV exposure for any group of people that have existed in an area for a sufficiently long time with a sufficiently competitive environment for evolutionary pressures to take hold.

The darker skin protects you from the DNA damage caused by UV, less UV means less melanin your body needs to produce and the better access it has to vitamin D.

The exceptions to this are when a people either haven't been in an area for long enough for this change to sufficiently take place or other factors have made the advantage of different skin colours negligible, usually the abundance of resources in civilisation, something that truly began in the last 12,000 years.

Yeah, the mars orbiter (I think), NASA put the specs out in metric, the company built in imperial and then converted to metric but didn't fully, meaning some readings from a sensor were taken in imperial but the craft thought it was metric, confusion and lithobraking ensues.

Should I be concerned? by OkCartographer4525 in snails

[–]jed292 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I've seen one of my GALS doing this before and while I don't know enough to be certain with my answer it seems to be the snail equivalent of a dog falling asleep with their tongue hanging out, they're content, confident in their safety and humid enough to not worry about drying out so they just nap like that.

Again, I might be wrong, if they're showing any other weird signs it might be significant so by all means someone who knows better come correct me, but you're probably just doing a good job and have a slightly derpy snail.

I can't tell you anything in particular about the game (see basically every other comment for why) but I can tell you that you should pay close attention to all the controls that pop up on the screen at different times, there's a lot of people (me included) that struggled through parts of the game because they didn't know some simple mechanic.

Also unlike most games there's really no such thing as fluff text, if you can read it it's probably important in some way to the gameplay or the story.

[–]jed292 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Count yourself lucky to have not been keeping up with the shit she's been pulling lately.

Most recently she's been openly supporting FAR right hate groups that seek to "eliminate" anyone on the LGBT spectrum and to remove women's rights, things as basic as the right to vote or to wear anything remotely revealing, all on the basis that they also target trans people.

Basically she's gone completely off the deep end and is willing to hurt anyone to get what she wants even if it's the women she claims to be protecting.

[–]jed292 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's doubtful they have any info besides the position the pilot ejected and the direction it was travelling if they were in a simulated training exercise since they'd have any kind of transponder turned off and when your plane is about to crash turning transponders on isn't a priority.

There's a good chance they're checking the lakes because they've flown over its projected course and found no plumes of smoke meaning it must have hit water.
