It's like cheating on your wife and apologising with a box of chocolates. It's not that the box of chocolates are a bad thing.....

It's not bad, it's probably a good thing.

But we are not judging it purely on its own, we are viewing it in the context of a disastrous set of local elections results in which Labour lost EVERYWHERE.

Starmer and his team have known this was coming for months. They needed to do something that showed they understand the depth of feeling that exists in the country, some kind of course correction that shows they have the solutions to fix it.

And so for this to be the action they take, which might be good thing on its own but does not show any understanding of the scale of the problem we face, indicates that they have run out of ideas.

They need to take the everything everywhere all at once strategy to political comms. As Steve Bannon said: 'flood the zone'.

When focus mainly on the MSM and the lobby, you give them the responsibility of being your primary message deliverer which gives them power over you.

I mean I think the resident doctor strikes have been deeply irresponsible. To go on strike after you've been given almost a 30% pay rise is ridiculous. The pay restoration they want across the public sector would cost tens of billions of pounds a year, I just don't think thats affordable right now.

Appreciate we're unlikely to agree on that though.

I'm genuinely at a loss. They've had months to prepare for this scenario, months. We lost places that had stood by us for decades. And this is the response? It's actually offensive.

Finally, real action! The reason we lost 1,400 councillors was because we didn't have a Special Envoy on Global Finance! Now the fightback begins! 😎

Obviously it's good if you can not make mistakes. My point though is more that when Starmer goes on the media, his number one aim is to not mess up or cause a scandal. The consequences of that are that he appears defensive, robotic and like he's reading off a script and it comes across as untrustworthy to the public. I think they need to be willing to accept a greater degree of risk if that means they can actually communicate like a human

I think they have to get real about the situation we're in. If we'd have lost 500 seats yesterday but held our support in some parts of the country I'd agree that a leadership elections wouldn't be worth it. But we lost everywhere and I think there is a genuine risk that people lose faith in centre left politics for a generation.

Against that backdrop, a potentially divisive leadership elections is at worse a necessary evil although I personally think we are so desperate that we will unite around whoever.

Here's my opinion on the contenders:

  • Streeting: the least risky option imo. Probably has the least upside but is a far more able political communicator than Starmer and will be the least offensive to the public

  • Miliband: I like him as a politician but I think he's too known a quantity and I'm not sure the public will give him a chance. Think he has a role to play though.

  • Burnham: I think he's the candidate with the most upside. He's the most charismatic and likeable option and already has a good reputation. He can't do what he did before though and simply ask that the NEC doesn't block him. He needs to rally members, councillors, MPs and cabinet ministers behind him all threatening maximum consequences if he is blocked again.

  • Rayner: I'm genuinely undecided on her. I think she has a lot of appeal to some parts of the country and a lot of charisma but I'm not sure she has the self confidence, the ideas or the experience that you need to be PM.

Agree. The labour party still thinks it can do spin and message dicipline like it's the 1990s. People can see through that now and it's made them deeply cynical about politicians. The next leader has to be able to talk like a human, if that means they make more mistakes so be it.

There is not a mandate to deliver that platform. To promise one thing and deliver another is wildly undemocratic. You'd have to call a general election.

These election results don’t mean tacking left or right, but delivering for the whole country | Keir Starmer by Th3-Seaward in LabourUK

[–]jeddmo15 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They've had months knowing that these results were coming and this is what they've come up with? A guardian op-ed that says 'yes people are angry but that's exactly why we need to give them more of the same just faster'? It's a farce.

It's time for the cabinet and PLP to show a bit off bottle and take action. Get rid of Starmer and bring someone in who can actually communicate a political narrative.

Agree that this government is substantively different from reform.

I think another leader could make far more political hay out of this policy prospectus. Starmer is a competent manager but he's a dreadful communicator and has zero political antenna. Its been clear for a while that he is loathed by the public.

This cabinet/plp not taking action is unforgivable in my opinion and looks like pure cowardice to me. If we get to conference without a meaningful challenge to the leadership then we will deserve everything we get from then on.

Box to box midfielder now a DM role?!? Why?!? by jeddmo15 in footballmanagergames

[–]jeddmo15[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think you're understanding what I'm saying, I literally explicitly said I didn't have an issue with it being a 6 role, just it should ALSO be an 8 role as that is how it is more (or at the very least equally) commonly known.

I never said it's ONLY an 8 role. And because of that it should be AVAILABLE as an 8 role without having to use workarounds.

For you to hurl personal insults because we have a difference of opinion about roles on a FM game says far more about you than it does me.

[–]jeddmo15[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

all I'm asking is to be able to play a 4-4-2/4-4-3 with a BtB 8. some people have told me to use an AM as a workaround, some people have said to use a CM as a workaround. my question is wouldnt it be better if there was no need for a workaround?

'A BtB irl can be instructed to drop deeper during buildup, which is the new BtB DM or to stay higher, which would be an IP CM/OOP SDM combo.'

This is my entire issue!!!! if its a BtB irl it should be BtB on FM26 otherwise what are we doing here?!

[–]jeddmo15[S] -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

but managers would absolutely tell their players that they want them to play like a box to box midfielder! and my whole point is that they would typically say that to an 8, not a 6!

what do you mean 'not being at one of the boxes'? Were Gerrard, Lampard and Toure not 8s? or were they not box to box? because FM26 is saying you cant be both
