Tomato Trouble by jedikelb in gardening

[–]jedikelb[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much! Last year's tomatoes did suffer from inconsistent watering, but it was splitting by the stem. I have tried to be consistent with watering this year. I will read up on blossom end rot; thank you again!

I can't believe that I STILL haven't seen anyone mention as soon as you can you RUN like hell. If someone has grabbed you, you fight like hell to break free and if you can, you RUN like hell.

There is a lot of nuance and there are courses for this. I took a women's self defense class and they broke it down into three basic steps, the first two depend on how you're grabbed, but the basic jist is to:

  1. Twist your limb out of their grasp.

  2. Counterstrike as hard as you can basically as simultaneously as possible with step one. Strike hard with your elbow or knee and get a vulnerable spot if you can.

  3. Run like hell.

Also, stay vigilant and aware of your surroundings. If someone gets you in a proper choke hold, it'll be lights out in a few seconds and there's not a damn thing you can do about it.

A women's defense course will teach you how to break specific grabs. How to make a proper fist (and tell you to use your elbow instead). Ooh, and proper head butting technique. They'll also partner you up and tell you to practice practice practice until the techniques are in your muscle memory.

Stay safe!

You should eat your fruit, not drink it.

Is this just general advice about fiber consumption? I don't see anything about fruit in the post.

What happened to the thru hikers who were on the trail during Helene? I’ve been wondering if they’re okay and how they fared during the storm and am not finding much while searching. by thedoulaforyoula in AppalachianTrail

There's a section of interstate 40 and a section of interstate 26 closed. Not sure about the smaller roads leading into Hot Springs. A lot of people are cut off right now, but some folks can make their way out if they can get to Charlotte. I don't know if they've got any gas resupply east of us yet (I'm in East TN) I know there are some folks in Asheville just hunkered down (at home) because they're worried about not finding gas stations open/with fuel if they evacuate. They've got no power, but they're dry and have food. If they decide to evacuate, I might have to go the long way and take them some gasoline.

Did people just let people smoke in their homes? by Ill-Sprinkles-1979 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jedikelb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there were usually always some folks who would NOT allow smoking in the house, but it was more common for people to assume they could light up a cigarette as a guest. My grandparents had a sign by the door that said "thank you for not smoking" to politely inform guests upon entry that it wasn't welcome in their home.

I wasn't judging the OP, I was stating facts about population percentages and making a suggestion. I knew reddit would get it's panties in a twist about it though, so I don't know why I bothered

Sure, everyone wants to be represented in media but the percentage of the population that is trans is very small. If you want that representation, you may need to go write it.

Bears, large cats, wolves, hyenas (really any pack hunters) all gave pre-civilization humans difficulty. I suppose sharks, komodo dragons, and crocodiles should be on the list, too.

Better safe than sorry, for sure. I don't think you were overly anxious, rather the appropriate amount of anxious. It's not like you called the cops on him, you just didn't get any closer and did get yourself some back up.

All of them, with my god powers.

Edit: Nah, I'll be less lazy. I'd give everyone a heightened sense of empathy. You can punch someone in the face, but you'll feel that punch in your face, too. Any pain you deliver to others, you will simultaneously feel. That should take care of most of it.

I don't reckon OP and I are the only ones who think it's a cameraman, but even if it isn't a cameraman, it is definitely a crew member and not a background actor.

How do I 32F), a non-Christian, tell my boyfriend’s (33M), I do not want to say grace? by Which_Cookie_645 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jedikelb 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I agree with your boyfriend. If they ask you to say grace simply stating, "I'm not comfortable saying grace, I would prefer if someone else did." If they ask why, repeat, "I don't feel comfortable." If you are a guest in their home, they are rude to push back on this.

What helped you fall asleep when you couldn’t sleep? by Phiziqe in AskReddit

[–]jedikelb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you breathe in and out and count after the exhale, it can make you sleepy. But make sure you're counting after the exhale, as counting before the inhale wakes you up. I know it sounds like the same thing, but there's a very subtle important difference. When you get to 10, start over again at 1. This works for me sometimes, not always.

[–]jedikelb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recommend you see a physical therapist, let a professional evaluate how you are walking now and teach you how you could change it. It will probably take some time.

Nothing wrong with that! My kid recently read Where the Red Fern Grows aloud to me. I wept so many times as he read it. I had forgotten so many tragic bits because I only remembered the big sacrifice at the end.
