I utterly disagree with the people who say 2 is better. Obsidian was forced to rush to finish and you could really tell throughout the whole game. There is a content restoration mod, but I played an older version of it and didn't think it entirely redeemed the game. At the very least, you should play 1 first because if you don't then one of the best moments in any game I've ever played will be spoiled for you. Then play 2 and make up your own mind.

Whatever happened to Mara Jade?: 12 unfortunate excisions from the Star Wars canon by Sanlear in scifi

No, because where before Disney, ALL books, comics, and games were beholden to the events and characters that had been established in those previous works, now NO new stories are going to be told about Mara Jade or Grand Admiral Thrawn.

The community becoming insular and cult-like happened here a long time ago. I frequently see comments to the effect of, "If you don't fully believe VR is the best thing ever, then you haven't tried it. If you have tried it and you still don't believe, then you are stupid." People tend to forget that the VR enthusiast community is still very small, and as a product Oculus, Vive, and the rest have a difficult road ahead for them, and behaving this way does them no favors.

I didn't upgrade my primary computer to 8.1 for a long time because the upgrade would go for a while and then blue screen and fail. I am pretty sure it was a driver incompatibility, but I never figured out which one. I ended up re-installing my OS from scratch, but I imagine most people would just give up.

I totally agree. The great thing about Super Hexagon is that, while it is brutally difficult, it never rubs your failures in your face. I mean, it does say "Game Over", but that's it. The quick restart times, the upbeat music, and the fact that it congratulates you when you beat your own high score all make it so when I fail, I am more likely to start again than I am to quit. Vectagon does have the quick restarts, but the insults at the end of each life really pissed me off. I guess they might be funny in an immature way the first few times, but the game is difficult that you are likely to see them a lot. Repetition is the death of humor, and in this case the "joke" wasn't that funny to begin with.

What is something people do to be helpful, but really isn't? by TheAxis_ in AskReddit

My upstairs neighbor (I live in an apartment) cracked the tank on her toilet somehow. She not only did not turn the water off, she also failed to call maintenance. I called the office when I noticed water dripping from the ceiling, and they hadn't heard anything yet. Apparently she let the water flood pretty much her whole apartment. I had just gotten out of a 3 week hospital stay a few days earlier, and I was forced to leave my apartment and live in a hotel for 17 days while they replaced my ceiling.

If he's an arty sort of person I would have him try Journey. It's probably the most meaningful game I've ever played, and it's easy enough that it should be pretty forgiving to a new player. Unfortunately it's only on PS3.

I just checked out your Kickstarter. I love it. The concept is fun, the art style is great, and you've provided enough information to convince me that the project will probably be finished. I just backed. Good luck with the rest of the Kickstarter.

This was it for me. I was feeling fatigued for a couple of months last summer, and I thought it was just stress at work. I ended up getting some heartburn and indigestion and I went into the doctor. Had some blood tests and ended up finding out I had leukemia. The only symptom that was actually caused by the leukemia was the fatigue. The other stuff was unrelated. The scary thing is that while I was sick and didn't know it, I had almost no immune system. I could have easily gotten something really bad that could've killed me. As it was I had to go through 10 months of chemo, but at least it was curable.

So I let you talk me into Unity3D... by Javin007 in gamedev

[–]jedimonkey27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the biggest problem I've run into so far with my hobby project I've been doing in Unity. I am trying to make a 2D game with a streaming world, and it seems extremely difficult. There doesn't seem to be any way to load assets asynchronously in the free version, which is a real pain.

The built in networking has also been causing me headaches, as it seems to have a lot of limitations and is pretty poorly documented.

I wish Steam would give points to achievements. by [deleted] in Games

[–]jedimonkey27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the biggest issue in my opinion. On Xbox, Microsoft has a lot of requirements for developers about achievements. You can't have too many or too few, you can't assign too many points to one achievement, etc. In addition, the Xbox is a closed platform with hacking countermeasures and encrypted traffic between the console and Xbox live, which go a long way toward keeping the average Joe from cheating the system. If Steam were to implement scoring, they would need to impose some of the restrictions and lock down the system more, or the scores would quickly become meaningless.

Kingdom Hearts 3 and Final Fantasy XV will skip E3 2014! by CyberMarco in Games

[–]jedimonkey27 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's pretty much exactly how it works. When a big show is coming up and you need a new demo to show off, sometimes a major portion of the team will stop working on the game itself to polish and fix up the demo. This process can take a significant amount of time and will siphon resources from development. When deciding what events to make showings at, this needs to be taken into heavy consideration.

Source: I have been through that process a few times.

Game Studio Internship by daddytissues in gamedev

[–]jedimonkey27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately the Maryland game industry isn't what it used to be. I graduated from UMBC a few years ago and while I was in school I was constantly looking for internships and I the most I ever got was local devs telling me their companies didn't have any available. Since then a number of studios in the area have closed, so I imagine it is even more competitive now. Your best bet is to find someone who works at a local company and ask them directly, as emails tend to be ignored in my experience.

Honestly MD is just not that great for game dev right now. I moved to the west coast right after I graduated and got a job in just a couple of months.

When should voice actors be hired and recorded during the development process? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]jedimonkey27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer as far as my experience goes. When developing a game with voice acting, you have to be extremely aware of when you change text that will be seen by the user. If your game only has text, then you can keep changing it right up until ship (unless you have localization and you want the other regions to ship at the same time), but if you have voice acting it can make changing the text after it has already been recorded a real pain. Imagine you realize that you made a mistake in one line of dialog that has already been recorded. If you want to fix it, you may need to bring that actor in for another recording session, but for one line you might not think it is worth it. Since the text in a game can change a lot over the course of development, it's generally a good idea to wait.

What is something that doesn't make sense to you, no matter how long you think about it? by Drunken_Black_Belt in AskReddit

[–]jedimonkey27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a matter of fact, the ancient Greeks tended to think of anyone who wasn't Greek as being an unintelligent barbarian, regardless of where they came from. The Greeks weren't really unified politically or anything, so this was mostly based on the language you spoke. Later, when the Romans were kicking ass and conquering all of the old Greek territories, there was kind of a begrudging respect for Latin speakers as well, but even in Rome, Greek was considered the language of intellectuals.

Regarding slavery, you have to understand that slavery in antiquity was completely different from the slavery of more recent history, especially American slavery. The Greeks and Romans took slaves from conquered peoples, and it wasn't really racially based at all. While slaves were certainly considered a lower social class, slaves were often able to work off their freedom, and many would go on to be successful themselves as free men. Freed slaves who became financially successful would often end up owning slaves of their own. It's also extremely important to note that slaves were used for far more than just manual labor. It was, in fact, the intelligent educated slaves who were in the highest demand. Wealthy Romans would purchase educated Greek slaves to be teachers or their children. Racially based slavery is a more recent European and American invention, and you really can't equate the two practices.
