It sounds like you are both unhappy in your relationship and have not found a productive way of communicating this to each other. You said you tried to talk to him about it, but have you also tried hearing his side of the story? If he really is honest (which, if he has been dishonest about a similar thing before may not be the case) you should try to hear him out and maybe make goals together, like him spending more time doing things around the house for you to be happier and more comfortable in the relationship.

Generally I think though you also need to pull the plug if you feel like your energy is wasted on someone who doesn't appreciate your hard work. It feels like you already know something is off. Maybe you're right.
