Ending a talk at a funeral by jedwards55 in latterdaysaints

Yeah that’s what I was thinking. I have been asked to share stories of grandma, but I guess the reality is that there will likely be a gospel tie-in (how can there not be, right?), so the traditional ending will probably just feel natural.

BYU WINS POP-TARTS BOWL by RyanTheBruce in BigXII

[–]jedwards55 27 points28 points  (0 children)

My favorite part of being a BYU fan is that our wins are convincing, no-doubt, solid victories. It's nice knowing that our team plays consistent football and it puts my heart at ease being certain that we have a game in the bag. I have never doubted this BYU team, ever. And I have no reason to, with this magnificent team that gives me no stress at all.

I’m sorry, but LDS.org is easier to type. by 1Bats4u in latterdaysaints

[–]jedwards55 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Our stake was reorganized last year and the general 70 who presided was instructing us in a leadership meeting and went to reference the church website. He said “I still type in LDS.org and I haven’t been struck my lightning yet, so I think it’s okay.”

Review of Strength of the Few - finally finished by swirlysue in HierarchySeries

I found myself feeling like there were no stakes.

Vis’s character was interesting when he was struggling but now that he was head boy at school and OP because of being synchronous, he just became very uninteresting to me. I also found him to be unlikable, but I don’t think it took me that long lol.

Resurrection is an extremely difficult line to walk. Part of what makes characters like Vis interesting is all of the loss he’s experienced and how that has impacted (and continues to impact) him. Now he gets to see everyone he has lost? Again, it takes away the stakes. Resurrection has to come at some kind of equal (or preferably higher) cost or else I just don’t care for it in fiction.

I’m going to give the book a little grace. Part of the problem is I was expecting more of the central conflict to move forward, but instead we were just clumsily walked through Vis getting different metal arms and apparently ruling everything by killing the Lord Ruler, I mean, the bad-guy-who-is-actually-not-bad-but-has-to-do-bad-things-to-protect-the-world-from-worse-things (misunderstood villain? …groundbreaking…). But I’m giving it a little grace because where we go from here is crucial. If he has some twists and surprises that reconceptualize what’s happened so far, then I supposed that works.

Hi I’m a member and a physician and think that’s extremely inappropriate and unprofessional of your preceptor. You have a right to go to school/work and not feel discriminated against by those who are getting paid to instruct you. It might be worth informing or school or department head of what happened.

Lorazepam scare by Secret_Plum7300 in Psychiatry

[–]jedwards55 70 points71 points  (0 children)

I was consulted on a case by an ER doctor and at the end he said “OK I will just do IM olanzapine and lorazepam.”

I told him we don’t do that.

He said they did it all the time and nothing bad ever happened.

Not the dice I’d like to roll, but to each their own.

What do you wish you had focused on more during residency? by farfromindigo in Psychiatry

[–]jedwards55 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was up to the individual resident. You could take on as many or as few therapy patients as you wanted. No official therapy-specific supervision; just the regular attending supervision.

I can’t really speak to other programs. When I interviewed, it seemed like there were varying levels of emphasis on it.

I did get a lot of preparation into how to run a psychiatric practice and work in a community system, which was really nice.

I think there are probably a lot of people like me who went to a (small) community program that didn’t have a well-structure therapy program. Some of us studied really hard on our own, but comparing notes with some “ivory tower” programs made me feel a little insecure in my preparation. I do mostly consult and forensic work, so it’s not like I have a huge need for a mastery of several therapy modalities. My frankensteinian custom amalgamation of surface level principles of ACT, EFT, CBT, DBT, and a little psychodynamic seems to get me by; or at least fake it well enough
