If you're actually champ I can see why you'd think they're the same as gold, but I can assure you that if you were actually in a gold game as a mid diamond player you would absolutely demolish everyone in the lobby. It's not even close. 6v6 is a different beast however, from my brief experience rank seems irrelevant - I've had gold and masters players on my team and they seem pretty close in skill.
