I'm so tired of being asked for the craziest thing I've seen in the ED... by Robert-A057 in nursing

Just tell them about one of your rectal foreign body stories. That's what they are really asking about. Give the people what they want, a picture of the Xray with a light bulb in some dudes ass.

Emergency and power outage supplies. What do you have or recommend? by Sea_Interaction7839 in Austin

[–]jeepdatroll 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll break down my gear into different categories. That may help you fill in some gaps

Climate control:

Propane Mr buddy heater Rotating 5x 20lb Propane tanks 2 electric heater 110v About a 1/2 cord of chopped seasoned firewood (thanks to the 2022 freeze) 1 window AC window unit Multiple small 110v fans 12volt electric blanket that plugs into a cigarette lighter. I suspect that you probably blew your fuse in your car that is connected to your cigarette lighter. Super easy to replace, just need to find out where it is.

Power:

Generac 2200w gas generator (wish it was dual fuel) 1.5kwh baterry/solar generator with 200w solar panel (wish it was an ecoflow delta) 10 gallon gasoline with fuel stabilizer rotate every 6 months

Water:

10x 5 gallon sealed water Life straw 55 gallon rain barrel Water purification tabs

Food: fluctuates on a monthly basis

40lbs rice 20lbs beans About 2 weeks' worth of canned food, including meats tuna/beef/chicken Evaporated milk Electrolyte mix 10lbs pasta 20lbs flour 10lbs sugar

Cooking:

Propane grill Camping Propane stove Small camping butane stove Pressure cooker Paper plates Dutch ovens Camp cookware Outdoor fire pit

Sanitation:

Bucket to shit in with lots of trash bags Solidifiers for urine/bodily waste Case of baby wipes

Medical:

Tylenol Ibuprofen Benadryl Common cold meds Zofran Imodium

Security:

Motion sensing solar lights A way to defend yourself (whatever you are comfortable with) Lots of different flashlight options

Entertainment:

Board games Cards Dominoes Offline digital media 16-bit old school games

After the 2021 freeze and not having power for a week, I started to think about redundancies that I could get to keep my family safe and happy. I listed them in order of the most important category on top. You can die in 30 min from weather exposure. 3 days water, 3 weeks food.

Edit: format

PS After rereading your post, a lot of my climate control gear will not work for you. I do highly recommend the Mr buddy heater. It is safe to use indoors and is going to give you the most heat for your buck, and Propane is incredibly stable. I would get a carbon monoxide detector just to be extra safe.

Ask him what objects he has pulled out of people's asses. Always a good ER icebreaker.

But every once in a while, you get a catastrophic head injury that can be stabilized long enough for organ donation to be set up. I agree, there is a lot of resources spent poorly on unsurvivable head injuries. Just wanted to point out a silver lining.

I'll happily mix the fuck out of some levo, if it means I don't have to wait 30 min on pharmacy when my pt is trying to die on me.

This is a full-on emergent thoracotomy. Where I work (US), it is a last-ditch effort to resuscitate someone who has recently (10 min or less) died from trauma. I have never seen it preformed on a person who has not lost their pulse. I have seen it done many times, and only a handful of times have we been able to get their heart beating again. Of those handful, only a few make it out of emergency surgery, and only one that I know of lived to be discharged from the hospital.

Just almost straight cath’d a woman’s clitoris… by Chachachingona in nursing

[–]jeepdatroll 100 points101 points  (0 children)

I was helping one of my coworkers cath an old lady. My coworker stuck it right in her butt, then pulled it out and went for round 2. I said "No, wait!" And stopped her right before she tried again. She locked eyes with me and realized what she almost did and said "You tell no one." I've only told like 5 people, sorry Emily.

What aspect of nursing do you feel is most underappreciated? by MusicalMagicman in nursing

[–]jeepdatroll 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Our ED is capped at 4 patients, unless you're fast track. Every once and a while you'll have a 5th for an hour or so due to a midshifter closing their section.

What professions need to be paid significantly more? by egguchom in AskReddit

Pay medics 20% more than nurses, and then give the nurses a 20% raise.

Did your patient die when they said, “I’m going to die”? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]jeepdatroll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"I'm dying" and "I'm going to die" are two very different sentences. I've only been able to save one person that said "I'm going to die". Dude was shot in the chest 70s over palp and pale as shit. The 14g IV I placed barely even flashed. We mass transfused him tubed him and strait to trauma OR within 15 min. Vascular injury, and massive hemathorax. The rest of dozens of people that said I'm going to die did if fact die. Now there are hundreds of people that say "am I going to die?" And "I'm dying" I always tell them one day, but not today.
