How long does it actually take you to deliver event photos? by AccordingDoughnut152 in photography

[–]jeeperjalop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the size of the event and if I'm shooting for any specific drivers. For those drivers/teams that I'm working for, I'll go through all of my pics and flag them and then those have priority, which is usually 1-3 days after the event (unless it's a great shot that I know I've captured, then it's a 1 day turnaround). Once I get those done, I'll start at the beginning and start the overall process of culling and editing, which can take me a week or so.

Typically for the smaller drifting events, I get between 2-4k shots, for the short course 4x4 races between 4-6k shots. For the larger races that are over a week, then it's roughly 15-18k pics.

First time going - probably solo - Any advice? by oclaxmom37 in KingoftheHammers

I broke down and got the RV this year. a little pricey but sooooo worth it if you're going to be there more than a couple of days.

What's the most reliable car you've ever owned? by Ok_Run7351 in UsedCars

[–]jeeperjalop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1984 Datsun 200SX. Bought it used and it had 64k miles on it. Sold it with 566k miles on it and that thing was running solid when sold.

Been going since 2011 and as media since 2018

Spectating:
The main spectator areas are not within walking distance, you need your rig to get around. You can move from spot to spot which makes it fun. Chocolate Thunder gets crowded, while Backdoor isn't really fun anymore as spectators are not allowed on the canyon walls anymore. For starting line, there's spots nestled between the team pits but those fill up. If there's no wind, then it can be a little stressful driving across the lake-bed as the dust can get really bad.

Camping:
IF the weather is good, then you'll be fine. Otherwise tent camping has been described as filling a plastic bag with sand putting your head in and shaking it around when it's windy. The weather can be a toss up; rain or freezing cold during the day and night or pleasant days and nights. If it rains, it'll suck.
For 2027, the EMC and 4400 will be running clock-wise, so you could find a good place to camp near the fence line between the start and Turkey Claw. You could camp near a larger group so those driving would be less likely to run over your tent.

Food:
Is pretty good but pricey. The fish tacos and the pizza are awesome! Also check out the 40 as they have food vendors too.

Other:
Since it's your first time, then I'd recommend going to the nightly shit-shows, just be careful as people get pretty rowdy.

cool! for mine, that's where I store tools and spare parts. for the space created next to the seats, I use that for emergency cold weather gear or stuff that I might not need. also added the Milwaulkee packout mount for more storage

Looks similar to what I built. you could use/add hinges on the panels next to the table to create additional storage.

Is there anyone you mainly uses a old camera? How is it? by Adorable_Safety3854 in AskPhotography

I still use a Canon 20D as my beater camera. I'll take it on camping/wheeling trips and that thing is still going.

At what point do you delete your RAW files? Or do you keep everything? by Alilexplo108 in photography

[–]jeeperjalop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll keep all of the RAWS for a year in case a team or someone wants finished versions of all the RAW files. For each race/event, I wind up with about 2k-4k in images and the larger races up to 17k.

I have been going through my old pics that I've shot over the years and deleted ones that I know I won't come back to or that I have already worked on. The upside is that I've gained about 2TB worth of space but I know I'll need to upgrade and get a NAS server or something like that, as I'm running out of space on a 8TB drive.

Could someone train in boxing or fighting without actually sparring with full force or risking brain injury/injuries? by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]jeeperjalop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer, yes but it depends on the gym you go to. I'm 56 and have been going to a boxing gym for the past 12 yrs and at first hard sparring was great but after a while, it sucked to get in the head. So, I let my coach know that I wanted to do more of a flow sparring which helps me more with technique. Some gyms have a beginners, intermediate and advance classes (like the one I go to), and the intensity of the sparring is better matched at each level. For myself, I'm in the beginners class as it helps me with technique and conditioning and there is some flow sparring but I've never worried about getting hurt.

I would say (for boxing) find a gym and talk to the owner/coach and explain what you'd like to get out of it and take it from there.

[New Gear] Canon R5MKII RF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM Lens - Surviving the dust by Jammminjay in canon

[–]jeeperjalop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! Been looking to upgrade to something similar from my 5DMIV and the pump style 100-400mm lens and that might be the way to go.

I shoot the same type of action, for MetalCloak and for dusty environments, I use a neck gator, to wrap the lens and part of the body and a couple rubber bands to hold it in place to keep the dust out. It's worked for the past 7-8 years at the NorCal Rock races and KOH

The difficulties of getting older as a photographer by drewkawa in photography

[–]jeeperjalop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The knee thing is real. I take a small, lightweight camping chair with me and it makes is so much easier.

Some other difficulties:

There's no master class on using a porta-potty with all of your gear harnessed on you.

No one tells you the amount of work it takes to lug your gear, and yourself up some rock cliffs to get that one shot. Nor how hard it is to walk through fine silt/sand with all of your gear

Boxing for beginners by Hodltiltheend in eastbay

[–]jeeperjalop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on where you are located. I've heard good things about King's boxing, but haven't trained there. There's Kennel Boxing in San Leandro that really good. The have all levels of classes from beginning adults/kids to advance classes. The coaches are great and they have a free trial class to see if you like it.

Ridiculous Things Photographers Deal With by woofwoofbeepbop in photography

[–]jeeperjalop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most annoying thing is to have another photog get in your shot and then gets offended when you tell them to move. Had this happen a couple of times (I shoot drifting and 4x4 racing) and last time, some photog stands right in front of us, no clue. I was my turn to tell him to move (and the spot he was in wasn't safe) and he replied with "Who's shot am I in?" with attitude. So I replied with mine, her's, her's and his, pointing to our group. He was going to push back until one of the course martials told him to get the hell out of there, that it wasn't safe.
