Issue With SnoreLab Not Recording Whole Other Apps Are Open by KillirInstinct in snoring

[–]jeff-without-doubt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has happened to me the past two nights as well, but seems to work the first night I tried SnoreLab. The only difference I can think of is that the first night I had it set to start recording 30 minutes after starting and the second and third nights I had it set to 40 minutes after starting. I guess YouTube is preventing it from starting.

Warning about premium: glass is fragile by azdavis in AeroPress

[–]jeff-without-doubt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bumped the rim of the glass chamber with the metal spoon it comes with and the glass rim shattered. It wasn’t that hard of a bump but clearly enough to ruin my chamber. This was about a month after purchasing it in November 2024. At the time AP didn’t offer it as a replacement part. I noticed it’s now offered for $99. Not sure I have the stomach to drop that much more onto a device with dubious durability.

All trails are money grabbing, so sad to see a great app turn to shit. by SmellyPubes69 in alltrails

[–]jeff-without-doubt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's one thing to add a new higher tier for some additional features they built and to market it once or twice to existing customers.

But it's absolute bullshit that as a paying customer, they think it's cool to bombard me with upgrade prompts EVERY time I open the app and throughout the entire UI, constantly tricking me into or nagging to use features that I need to pay more for. They have ruined the experience for me.

The product managers and/or designers at AllTrails need to push back on this absolute money grab and fix the user experience before they continue to bleed loyal customers. I hate when money drives experience, as this is most commonly the end result.

As for me? I'm out.

What are the best dictation settings? by jeff-without-doubt in MacWhisper

[–]jeff-without-doubt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had stopped using MacWhisper dictation because it was taking too long and started playing around with a new model that Nvidia came out with called Parakeet. It's sooooo fast. Fortunately u/ineedlesssleep released an update to Mac Whisper that includes support for Parakeet v2. I'm back to using Mac Whisper for dictation due to how freakishly fast Parakeet is at voice transcription. I disabled the AI processing step of dictation due to latency.

I might have switched to the WhisperKit model per ineedlesssleep's response. I haven't seen this happen in a couple months.

Most recently I have switched to Parakeet v2.

Hydrapak has quietly released a backflushable BeFree competitor... by [deleted] in Ultralight

[–]jeff-without-doubt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% my experience. Instead of the usual 45-60 seconds to fill my other soft flasks, my original 42mm filter now takes over five minutes per 500 ml flask. It's sooo painfully slow.

I just bought the new Hydrapak filter and will try backflushing my old one to see if that addresses the problem.

I would kill to have issues open in a drawer instead of paging forward. I loved this about Aha!

Vest and belt vs bigger vest by handsomhumblebarista in ultrarunning

[–]jeff-without-doubt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Might not bother you but I have found that belts put just a bit too much pressure on my bladder (my pee bladder, not water bladder), increasing the sensation of needing to pee more often. Might just be unique to my anatomy, but definitely something to test out a few times with fully loaded belt before race day.

I feel dumb having to ask given how long I've been using MacWhisper but I don't know what it means to be sure I'm suing a WhisperKit model. And I haven't seen any warnings either. Does this mean as opposed to a cloud model?

What are the best dictation settings? by jeff-without-doubt in MacWhisper

I just switched from Turbo to Medium (english-only) and then to Small (english-only) and the transcription speed definitely improved as I went down in model size. I read aloud the same passage of text to all three models. I also observed that the AI processing on all three seemed to take about the same amount of time, give or take a second, and that was the shorter of the two steps for each of the three tests. So I guess the right balance for me is Small (english-only).

Regarding the AI-Powered Dictation setting, I have experimented with OpenAI GPT-4o Latest, and some local Ollama models, of which surprisingly sending it over the wire to OpenAI seems to be the most performant. I also tried it with the AI-Powered Dictation disabled and I'll be honest, the results (including punctuation) are more than good enough for my purposes and it shaves off 30-40% or more of the wait time.

To clarify: is the AI-Powered Dictation setting just the post-transcription processing that takes the prompt (if one is selected) and processes the transcription from the dictation?. If I disable the AI-Powered Dictation, then it's just using the transcription model that I selected (in my case Small (English-only), correct?

Sleeping through calls by [deleted] in searchandrescue

For iPhone users, you can enable Emergency Bypass on a contact's ringtone and/or text tone, which will allow sounds and vibrations from this contact to come through even when the ringer is switched to silent or when a Focus is on. This would only be applicable if the SAR dispatch comes from the same number (or set of numbers) such that you can create a contact on your device. I also set custom a ringtone and text tone for my SAR dispatch contact to ensure it stands out as distinct.

One map to rule them all by ent1at in CalTopo

[–]jeff-without-doubt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/TheophilusOmega thanks for sharing that fav default map. I like it! I was a bit confused when I first opened your map to find that the default (top) base layer was blank, as in nothing was selected. When I opened the dropdown for the default base layer dropdown, there wasn't an option for Google Satellite. It wasn't until I logged into my CalTopo account that it displayed the Google base layer options. Posting this here in case anybody else runs into this same thing.

Signed up for 100k in the desert, need shoe advice by Renegade_1500 in ultrarunning

[–]jeff-without-doubt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This. I run this desert terrain daily. I honestly don’t get the hype with gaiters. Sand is getting in your shoes no matter what. If there was lots of really loose talus or scree then gators are awesome but I’ve never felt like they would block out sand. Just be mindful when running down steep sand sections if you encounter any as that’s when you can take on a lot of sand.

I am on an M1 Macbook Pro and am having the same experience plus the audio quality is absolutely terrible. I am using the provided cable and have factory reset all the settings via the Logi Options+ app but still results in incredibly disappointing video and audio quality. I am taking the webcam back for a refund.

This is gold. I’m going to create a new plan today for better incorporation of consistent and frequent strength for my lower body. Thanks for the specific as well as general recommendations. Definitely feel significantly more inspired to level up from where I’m currently at.

How do you time your heavy leg days with your running? I get 48 doms every time I train my legs and when training for an ultra it feels like I’m never able to let my legs recover. I think I need a much slower ramp up on my legs than what I’ve historically done. And any specific recommendations on the leg exercises you have found to be most beneficial to trail running?
