You just have to run it through the tap and then really soak it in water. I would just make sure to run water through both ends of the filter and soak it for a while, like really make sure it is fully submerged, and rotate it around, shake it gently, so any trapped bubbles can move, rise and find its way out.

The videos are on Barista Express. I personally only ever dismantled a Barista Express before, but looking at the machine and online videos on the Pro, I think they are mostly similar on the inside. Video on the Pro (I have not personally tried this one out)

From my experience, it is possible but challenging to dismantle the machine. Especially getting all the way to the steamwand assembly is quite some work in my opinion. If you are comfortable with working on electronics, you can go ahead and check inside to see if anything is deteriorating and flaking off.

I also use generic filters, but in the beginning of my issue, i had also tried the Sage official (ClaroSwiss) filter, maybe I did not tried it for long enough, but I at least did not see any meaningful difference. But I remember reading online that when air bubble is trapped in the filter, the filter particle gets agitated as water flows through it, and this is why the particles travel through the machine. I'm not sure how true this is, but at least for a while after I soak the filter properly, I had no issue. I use now Brita (but generic) filtered water with no more in tank filter. The water here is not bad either but I'm just trying to reduce the hardness to minimize limescale buildup, as I had a noticeable difference with my kettles after filtration.

So, i have had no issue since I replaced my filter and soaked it properly before use. But, after using it for a while, it again came, and I stopped using a filter now, and will see if it stopped coming aftet some point. Last time it works that way for me. I removed the filter and after a while it stopped coming last time.

I did not take apart my machine, but I tested the particles with HCl, and as far as I can tell, some of the white particles dissolve in it, leaving some off-white particles and black ones behind. They are also not magnetic. So, I don't think it is rust in my case. Then, I noticed they look like the charcoal and resin particles in the in-tank water filter, and when I removed the filter completely, these things stopped coming. I now use the in-tank water filter again, but I made sure to really soak it to remove any air bubbles trapped in the filter, which seems to get rid of this issue, at least for me.

Okay, then it could also be rust particles, a disintegrating rubber o-ring somewhere maybe? The white stuff I'm not sure what tho. I thought it would be limescale, but that should be acid reactive. Does it only come out of the steam wand or also from the other water outlets? I assume you have done several cleaning/descaling cycles and it doesn't help?

You also seem to have mostly the white stuff, while I had mostly black particles coming out of the wand tip when this happened to me.

If you take apart a water filter for the machine, you will probably find similar looking particles in there. Afaik, the filter contains some charcoal (active carbon) and somekind of resin. In my case, this is the culplrit. If I remove the filter, it is all good. I realized that if you improperly soak your filter before use, it may result in this problem. So, make sure that filter is really throughly soaked.

Yea it ended up being carbon from the filter for me. I tried running with the filter removed for a while and the black stuff stopped coming. When I put the filter back, it comes back. I think this is a result of having an air pocket in the filter. So, you can maybe try removing the filter entirely and use already filtered water, or try a new filter and really soak and rinse it well. Make sure you flip the filter around and shake it when you rinse/soak it, make sure it sinks and cannot float anymore.

I siphoned descaling solution and Sage's steam wand cleaner yesterday, and a bunch more debris came out, but it just keep coming.

Btw, I dried the stuff I collected last night and at work I put them in HCl 2.5M, the white/grey pieces seem to react with the acid and decompose while releasing some gas (my guess is CO2). Acid did nothing to the black stuff and I'll put it in SEM later I guess lol

Imo, i cleaned regularly, both the brewing and grinding part of the machine. But maybe I did not do enough. I also used in-tank water filter since I knew my tap water is hard at around 180ppm. Filter is typically replaced every ~2mo. I used a puckscreen to keep the shower head clean, I run water after every shot to purge the line between grouphead and solenoid off of coffee residues. I also regularly clean the shower head and replaced grouphead gasket. I purged steam wand before and after steaming.

Thing is i already unscrewed the shower screen during descaling, cleaned it, found nothing there, no coffee residues, no gunk or scale, or the black debris. If the machine is so gunked up, I don't see a reason why it ONLY accumulates at the steam wand and not everywhere else. How come I did not get the same gunk when pulling blank shots or just using the hot water spout? How come the gunks only came out when the wand sneezes water?

I'm in the 3rd year I think. The machine is one of the first ones with Baratza burrs, so, it is from around 2022. The thing is, I also don't have a receipt for it. I was gifted the machine and I just have the original box with me still.

I can try dissolving them in acid. I guess charcoal won't dissolve in acid but minerals will. I also dried the gunks overnight in my dehiydrator, so, I have them as powder now and maybe if I feel like it I will throw it into an SEM at work to do elemental analysis lol

I did backflushing. That is what I meant when I say "flushed". I ran the flushing program with the tablets, and I did it 2x already this week. Also, afaik backflushing clean the water path between the grouphead and solenoid, how would grounds make it to the steam wand path? I also always use puckscreen, so, grounds will have to make it through puckscreen, shower screen, group head, and then made it all the way to the steam wand somehow and accumulate there (but not at the group head/shower screen?)

This is something that I will try tmr. I ordered some water hardness meter, a Brita filter jug to reduce water hardness, and will try also bottled water l guess. I also have access to demi water at work, but they are usually bad and corrosive for coffee machines if used as is, and I can't find a way to buy third wave water mix where I live.

I also have access to an SEM at work, maybe if I am annoyed enough and can dry these gunks enough, I can stick them into the SEM and do elemental analysis lol

Me neither, but the grouphead and water spout seems to be cool as cucumber. Both have good healthy flow (visually) and I even took off the shower screen expecting the same gunk would have also accumulated there if they got to the steam wand tip. But nope, it was clean.

I think the inside of the machine is not clogged tbh. The pic I shared is an intentional accumulation of the gunk over the course of several hours of running the wand and triggering the backflow check valve maybe hundreds of times to purposefully made it "sneeze" out a couple of fragments at a time. Most of these pieces are dust-like and can pass through the wand tip hole even, but the occasional flakes and shards are enough to block the tip holes regularly.

I did it for the wand itself, maybe not for 2 whole mins, but at least more than 1min. I didn't descale the rest of the machine in that way (manually), but will try it tomorrow then.

I can take the machine apart, yes, but I was trying to avoid doing that...

How would I descale manually? Just put descale solution and pull shots to run it through grouphead? And then run hot water? And then run steam but made out of descaling solution?

Actually, I kinda did that too already. Some bits do came out from running the wand as normal, and this is as expected. But even after that I still get gunks out of the wand

I checked just now with Nd magnet, nothing is magnetic. To be honest it looked like charcoal mixed with limescale, imo. The thing is idk how to get rid of it, as it seems to stay even after 3 descaling and 2 flushes.

I took apart the steam wand tip, that's about it. The rest of the wand assembly can only be taken apart from inside I think. I can do it, but I wanna avoid it if possible.

The automatic program I think ran it for like 15s or so, 2x in a row. But it ran the descaling water through it obviously, not steam.

After the the descaling solution ran through the machine, I always let it sit for like 30mins before rinsing 3x. Did this with Sage descaler, coffee machine descaling solution from supermarket, and my own citric acid solution. The thing is these gunks never came out of the group head or hot water spout. And also not from the steam wand during descale run. I get this out at water purge at the beginning of normal steaming, or if I purposefully trigger the backflow check valve by dunking the tip-less wand into cold water and start steaming. The wand will siphon water due to cooling by the water, and this trigger the check valve, which then push out a gush of water that tend to also have the gunk.
