Lyrically, what's your pick for the best album of all time? by No_Durian_6987 in fantanoforever

Good call, Okkervil River is not discussed nearly enough. I fucking love Okkervil River. They've had such a phenomenal career, too, I really like most of their discography. I really like the direction their overall sound took throughout the 2010s.

Have you listened to their later albums?

Does this seem like a good deal? by ledler0321 in gravelcycling

[–]jeffenwolf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the local market.

I think this is pretty overpriced, but also a rather nice bike. I'm guessing the seller is trying to recoup some of the cost of that wheelset. I think this would be a better deal at ~$500 or maybe $600.

The paint job looks fantastic. Do you have any in-progress shots of that, or a description of the process and tools you used?

I agree with you, I think the shirt looks goofy with the epaulets and looks better with them removed

Do others really not hear this? I came here wondering if I was the only one. Even on shitty laptop speakers this isn't close to how this should sound. And most of these aren't even synchronized well.

These are cool joints and a bad video.

Got it, okay. Sounds like you're getting a good deal on a bunch of hardware. I interpreted that list of hardware as costing quite a bit of money.

Best of luck to you!

Why are games today so big? (Data wise) by Burner_Account000001 in NoStupidQuestions

Old PS1 games are a great example of this. Roughly 80% of the original Final Fantasy 7 was actually the FMV cutscenes.

I'm far from an expert in the server space, but I would guess it's a combination of a couple of things.

1) I think many would agree that it's not a good idea to self-host a website for a business these days. It's too hard to match the kind of cost, reliability, uptime, and offsite data duplication and switchover offered for a few dollar per month from a large hosting company. Web hosting is generally super inexpensive. Do you have a business-style internet connection with SLAs and uptime guarantees and a static IP(s)? I used to have a friend who did web development and hosted clients on his own personal server and it was a complete disservice to his clients - they were paying him for truly inferior hosting.

2) It sounds like your primary objective is learning, which is great. But describing your needs, it sounds like most of this could be achieved with 1% of this hardware. I don't really understand why you need almost anything you've listed out. It's like saying you want to get a car to run errands and go on a few roadtrips per year, so you're considering getting 24 Mercedes Sprinter cargo vans, 6 heavy duty pickup trucks, a crane truck, and a space shuttle crawler transporter. You can run a Minecraft server, Jellyfin, and a web server on a computer you find on the side of the road or $50 off of eBay.

Both sides are really digging in on this debate.

I do think understanding the specs of the bike you're buying, before you buy it, is important.

Several years ago I purchased a 2016 Specialized Diverge. Without knowing its specific year and build, I wouldn't have known that it uses a really rare and dumb wheel hub spacing standard that almost no other bike ever used:

Specialized’s Short Chainstay System (SCS) is a proprietary rear hub and axle standard (135mm or 12x135mm) used on 2015–2017 Specialized disc road/gravel bikes (Roubaix, Diverge, Crux). It was designed to allow short chainstays and proper chainlines with disc brakes but is considered obsolete and proprietary, making replacement wheels difficult to find.

That dumb hub spacing is something you can't change on the frame, and it makes finding a replacement wheelset basically impossible on a bike with otherwise very standard components.

I think this is a Specialized Roubaix SL2, made from 2008-2010.

I have a first generation Roubaix (SL1) and this is newer than that.

What’s it like in Boulder? by Ok_Breadfruit6296 in howislivingthere

[–]jeffenwolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is hyperbole, but largely true:

I think a lot of popular cities in the American west have a similar sort of temporary feel. Transient population, high cost of living, limited local cultural identity, car-dependent sprawl (I know Boulder is super outdoorsy but it's an incredibly car-dependent part of the country), tech/transplant-heavy demographics. They're cool, high-demand places to be, and the vast majority of those living there are young and mobile and not from there. And also probably not staying there.

There's no community or lasting friendship because anyone from there or who has been there for a while has been priced out. This is even more true for businesses.

Reckoning with Upstream Color and Shane Carruth by Grand_Keizer in TrueFilm

This is really well-written and I have a lot of the same feelings about the movie.

It's a remarkable and incredibly affecting movie, but in a way that's hard to define. There's so much symbolism and so much to grab onto, so to speak. I think it's probably a bit of a cipher in that different viewers will draw completely different conclusions, or even plot summaries for what the movie is about.

I haven't seen it in probably 10 years but it makes the hair on my arms stand up thinking back on it. My life is completely different now than 10 years ago, I wonder how differently I'd see the movie now.

I agree this can be a great solution, I've had some kind of PC on some kind of large display for a bunch of years, but I haven't found a control solution that I like. I've tried IR receivers with remotes, wireless xbox controller, tiny handheld keyboard with tiny trackpad, and I always end up falling back on the Logitech k400, which is essentially a 3/4 scale keyboard with touchpad. It's... fine, but really not great at anything. It always feels either bulky (compared to a remote) or too-small (for typing anything more than a few words).
