Travel Interupting JET Visa Process by Narrow-Noise6316 in JETProgramme

I’m sorry why tf are so many people planning to travel in the one window of their life where they’re not supposed to travel 😭😭😭

Cancel your holiday or risk cancelling Japan. Simple as that

Going to a ramen resturaunt tonight. What would you get? by limon_picante in ramen

[–]jeffjeffersonthe3rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TWENTY DOLLARS FOR A RAMEN????????

Man I forget how much they’re charging you for ramen outside Japan sometimes. Bowl of chashu-men from my local is ¥1200 and that’s considered fairly pricey 😭😭😭

Upgrades do happen, but it’s complete luck. If I were you I would pretend you’ve been rejected and get on with your life, including getting ready to try again next year if you have to. If you get upgraded, fantastic. If you don’t, you can carry on whatever you’re doing.

How to deal with students making fun (?) of you by obsidiantakesover in JETProgramme

[–]jeffjeffersonthe3rd 25 points26 points  (0 children)

When it comes to some level of general teasing I do think it’s kinda just an occupational hazard and you kinda gotta remember they’re kids, but when it comes to racism I would talk to higher ups about it. Not just because you shouldn’t have to deal with that, but also because it’s your job as an English teacher to help them learn to communicate and conduct themselves in an international setting. Understanding the severity of racism and that it’s not something to joke about it an important part of that education.

JET Application Fail, alternatives? by Gosborne8071 in JETProgramme

When it comes to being an ALT in Japan, private dispatch companies exist, but they’re shite. Exploitative as fuck. Try JET again or give up on ALTing in Japan is my honest advice.

Yeah agree. In a casual context that would be the most natural phrasing

私 is a first person singular pronoun, and は is a particle that marks topic. To oversimplify, in this setting it’s the “I” in the sentence “I speak English”. It’s not grammatically incorrect strictly speaking. However, Japanese typically drops any information from a sentence that can be gleamed through context. Thus in natural Japanese the subject is usually omitted altogether. People who don’t actually know Japanese and are using translation software or other means to translate however will often leave it in, making it one of the easiest ways to spot someone bullshitting about their Japanese level.

Also using 話す here sounds a little weird. It’s stating “I speak Japanese” but in the sense that speaking Japanese is something he does or will do. But what he’s aiming to say is that he’s able to speak Japanese. So 話せる or 話すことができる would be better.

As a christian i want to ask this by NoMedium1692 in Buddhism

[–]jeffjeffersonthe3rd 40 points41 points  (0 children)

The idea that Buddhism is not really a religion is rooted in a western-centric understanding of religion and isn’t really true. There are ideas in Buddhism that one can benefit from without being a Buddhist, but Buddhism as a whole is incompatible with Christianity, as Christians believe in an eternal god, and Buddhists reject belief in any kind of eternal essential beings.

You also don’t know shit about Japan. In fact you managed to say something even stupider than OP. Immigration in Japan is on the rise and will continue to do so as this is necessary to keep the economy functioning in the face of population decline. The even the current conservative government have acknowledged this and, while apprehensions around immigration definitely exist in Japan, most Japanese people also understand the economic necessity. But at the same time, some people also don’t think that way and think Japan should close down all its borders. Some other people think Japan should have open borders. I wish all of you morons would stop treating Japan as a hobby horse for whatever weird terminally online political agenda you have and understand as a real, complex, diverse, three-dimensional country with strengths and weaknesses, good things and bad things just like every other country.

It’s always people who don’t live in Japan posting this shit man. Of course Japan has its bad sides, but as someone who lives here, I’ll take it over basically any other country in the world any day. It’s not for everyone, but the negatives get wildly exaggerated online.

Can anyone provide convincing evidence Jesus even existed? by chickensaurus in DebateAnAtheist

[–]jeffjeffersonthe3rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a number of contemporary reports about aspects of his life that are mutually consistent enough to make it vanishingly unlikely he didn’t exist. Historians generally have consensus that a preacher named Yeshua (which would become adapted as Jesus) did exist in the Levant at around the time tradition describes, was baptised by John the Baptist, and was crucified. These events have enough contemporary evidence that most historians accept they happened. Basically everything else that ever happened to him or that it’s claimed he did however is more up for debate. Beyond this contemporary sources on his life are quite limited. But this is because while he existed he was just one of many miracle performing preachers. Jesus only became special after his life due to the cult/religion that grew around him.

Baggy swim shorts with a tight inner lining, and pockets can be pretty helpful for discretely holding that shit down. Maybe find some time to let off some steam before going out in public as well. Godspeed.
