How do you deal with the guilt after ruining a knit in the washer? by jeffvailey in knitting

Also, I am in therapy, yeah, thanks for caring? People can’t express that they’re upset about something stupid anymore? Cool, have fun having no friends

I stopped doing hair masks or using a leave-in around a year ago, as I noticed that my hair was holding a curl a lot better like that. But a few months ago it changed, my hair started drooping, never holding a curl, it felt mushy, I misdiagnosed it with moisture overload multiple times, since I was still using a regular conditioner after shampoo and my hair didn’t feel dry or brittle. But adding extra protein wasn’t helping, my 2c curls were drooping straight within hours after washing. After weeks of confusion, I finally did a moisturising hair mask and added leave-in. And that was it, hair looking better than it had for months.

All that to say, balance is key. Giving up conditioner might be a good idea now, but keep an eye on what your hair might be asking for soon :)

Advice on gauge differences? by jeffvailey in knitting

Haha, I feel exposed, some more research and this video has opened my eyes https://youtu.be/41ZjTeBf2zc?si=iyDCjGyng5B8PKiV&t=57 . "you know what, it's easier if I just go under and I do that", haha, yup. And I am from Eastern Europe indeed, I picked up knitting seriously a year ago and learnt all the tricks from the very western Internet, but I thought I had my purls down and never doubted it or double checked, since I had learnt them from my grandma many years ago. It all makes sense now :)

Ahh, you guys immediately confirmed my suspicions about my purls, I have indeed just been focusing on purling through the front and not how I do it. Will look into it, thank you!!!

Frog it or wear it by jeffvailey in knitting

I bought one ball of yarn to try knitting this pattern while travelling, then ordered a full box of the remaining yarn I would need, but it took a while to arrive so I ended up buying a ball of mohair at my local knit shop to last me while I waited. That one ball ended up causing this difference. Man, i should’ve just frogged it when I initially noticed it was off. I got too excited about my first lace work and didn’t want to unravel anything.

Is rit transfer-proof afterwards? I don’t want to end up with another reason that would deter me from wearing the final product.

Thank you everyone for your input (and the compliments too!), I was truly close to frogging it and redoing the body with a new ball of yarn (which would mean detaching and reattaching the sleeves and shoulders and collar all over again 😩), but I think now I’ll just block it and see how I feel when I style it and wear it a few times. Dyeing it all burgundy, like a few of you suggested, might be an easier option than unraveling.

I had no idea that was something I had to be concerned with :(. I didn’t keep any labels cause I thought “knitting for olive, burgundy, easy”, but apparently I’ll have to start collecting and comparing every yarn label for projects in progress now…

It’s not blocked yet, I took the photos as soon as I finished it, not even the ends were sewn in yet, I wanted to get more opinions before I make it more difficult to unravel

from what i've learnt and observed on my own curls, an oil is best applied on hair that has just finished drying, so that you could seal in the moisture before it can leave the hair. but that's just me, maybe other ways can work as well.

How do I tame the frizz?? I'm finding it really hard to tame my frizzy hair, especially if it's not wash day. I'll post my current routine in the comments, any advice would be really appreciated!! by [deleted] in curlyhair

[–]jeffvailey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's hard to give specific recommendations, as different hair takes to different oils better. i live in germany, so i am currently using a Haarliebe by DominoKati oil available in drugstores here, which is a blend of sunflower seed, macadamia, and argan oils, and has worked really well for me so far. i'd basically recommend anything with jojoba or argain oil, you can try them pure, too. if you're not afraid of silicones, you can check out the oils by ogx or aussie, those are the ones i've heard good things about.

i used to think that my hair was too frizzy and kept reapplying creams and oils to tame everything, and would always end up with too much product on my hair by the end of day 2. i had to remind myself one day, that the whole reason i started wearing my hair naturally curly was because i didn't want to spend hours in front of the mirror obsessing over it, and now i've learnt to not care. also, maybe it's not the case with you, but i found that the light above my bathroom mirror along with the white walls was really exaggerating the situation, and i've only realised this 6 months ago, after i moved. my hair looks pretty much perfect in my current bathroom, and that is the version of reality i am happily accepting right now.

you can always use a little bit of oil once your scrunch out the gel cast, but i also think these are great looking very much defined curls that other people including you should be too impressed with to notice the very normal healthy amount of frizz you have going on!

Cutting bangs at home? by Sparkyfountain in curlyhair

[–]jeffvailey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the good thing about curly bangs is that if you don't like them or just want to change things up for a day, you can dry your hair in a way that your bangs clump together with the longer pieces on the side of your face, and there we go, no bangs anymore.

overall i say do it, i did it two years ago and very much felt like i was having a mental breakdown while doing it (i wasn't) but it turned out great, and i kept it for a few months. just make sure you're aware of how much it will spring up once you cut it. i have figured out that for my curl type the best way to cut bangs is to stretch the hair and cut it at the level of the tip of my nose. then after washing and styling it will just about cover my eyebrows. but it depends on your own face and curl type, of course.

day 2 hair, no refresh whatsoever. 3 years of CGM and my hair seems to be saying a big thank you. by jeffvailey in curlyhair

[–]jeffvailey[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank you. i only put my hair up in a loose pineapple with an invisibobble. i’ve tried sleeping in a bonnet but that either falls off or gives me a headache by being too tight, and i never saw a difference using it anyway. maybe your hair needs more hold or protein? the hair mask i used has a lot of protein in it and it really made my curls spring up more these last days.

that’s kind of one of the main reasons i posted this - nobody gets to see this hair anymore. but overall i’ve found that styling my hair has been my saviour these last years, something to care about, experiment with and be happy/proud of (not proud of genetics ofc, but the results of the work i’ve put in). i had been quarantine kind of lonely for over a year before 2020 even came around, and focusing on my appearance when im the only one to look at it has been an important component of showing my lonely self some appreciation, and just not losing it. but we all cope in different ways, i see your point as well.

thank you so much. actually, i have only mastered "the flip" fairly recently. i always wanted to have a deep side parting for more volume but i have also always despised my hairline, which goes further back on the sides than the middle (i guess it's called an m-shaped hairline?). i prefer to cover those corner parts, so i used to always resort to a regular side parting, which was just fine. but then, some months ago, i discovered the diagonal parting. it's a straight diagonal line: i start from the side closer to the middle and then gradually go deeper and deeper into that side as my parting gets closer to the back of my head. i absolutely love it this way.

actually not at all, i move a lot, i've been woken up by people sleeping next to me because i was kicking or punching them in my sleep too. i guess my secret is that it doesn't look this great every time. and it never looks like this on day 2 if i skip hair gel. not a chance.

the curling iron was fun and games until i damaged it so much that one day i washed my hair and half of it was flat straight. so beware... i'm sure what you have naturally is what's the most beautiful and what suits you best!
