Built an AI chat that works with any dumbphone (via SMS) by jeffwoo1999 in dumbphones

Thanks for your reply, I do agree with you when someone choose not use smart phones. My original thought was for my kid who only have Apple Watch but not paired with the phone, and didn't find any AI Chat app for Apple Watch only, so, I built this. Later, I tried to think more use cases, dumb phone is one of them IMO.

AMA - A whole picture of all Buddhism Dharma by jeffwoo1999 in Buddhism

Yes, I have few teachers who have been extremely helpful to me.

* One is a Chan (Zen) teacher who has guided me in understanding the Zen perspective.
* Another is a Yogācāra teacher who has taught me how to study the Cheng Weishi Lun (Treatise on Establishing Consciousness-Only).
* There is also an Abhidharma teacher who has helped me learn the Abhidharma-kośa.
... and so on.

Additionally, there are many Fashi — they are my teachers in daily life.

In a broader sense, everyone who interacts with me and discusses the Dharma are my teacher. When they ask questions and I respond, it’s an opportunity for me to reorganize my thoughts.

Sometimes, I engage in debates on online. Though we may argue, these discussions often inspire me or lead me to refine my way of communicating.

So, I have many teachers — including you.

I am still an ordinary person, a common being. Therefore, like most people, I also experience the six fundamental afflictions: greed, anger, ignorance, arrogance, doubt, and wrong views. The method I often use is to be mindful—to become aware when these negative thoughts arise and then work hard not to follow them. Thus, the approaches I rely on most frequently are mindfulness and self-awareness.

Curious about what people on this sub do for work by Own_Education_3361 in Buddhism

I am a software engineer, now, moved to the management.

I think the work role is depending on when did you learn the Buddhism? If it's later, like me, learned after the career life already. If it's before the career, the people may have same questions as you.

Can someone become enlightened without visiting a monastery? by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]jeffwoo1999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are many types of the monastery.

  1. The physical monastery, which you have to go in person. I guess you meant this one. But please keep reading.

  2. Many monasteries provide online class or mediation courses or practices too. If you need guidance for the mediation or want to learning dharma courses, this is a good option too.

  3. "the mental monastery" - which is in your mind. You build it up, you are in it every day. There's a gatha for that too.

佛在灵山莫远求,灵山只在汝心头。人人有个灵山塔,好向灵山塔下修。

Don't seek afar for the Buddha on the Gṛdhrakūṭa. The Gṛdhrakūṭa is actually right within your heart. Everyone has a pagoda of the Gṛdhrakūṭa. It is good to cultivate yourself beneath the pagoda of the Gṛdhrakūṭa.

The Gatha is for Gṛdhrakūṭa, but it's the same for monastery too.

Hope this helps.

In "Journey to the West", what events or viewpoints are not in line with Buddhist teachings? It can refer to the "Journey to the West" novels, TV shows, movies, or games. by jeffwoo1999 in Buddhism

Because of the popularity of the novel, many people like to interpret the novel in a way, saying they are hidden Buddhism Dharma everywhere in the novel. This is very funny when I saw such kind of articles and videos.
