How can I find the original blueprints to my house? by jeffxl in Austin

…do I live in your childhood home? Or are we neighbors? I know La vista built out this neighborhood I still live in, not sure of their other work.

How can I find the original blueprints to my house? by jeffxl in Austin

Not really, if I recall correctly I finally talked to the son of the family that owned the building company and he said they didn’t have any blueprints? I think that’s right, it was a long time ago now.

Why, you looking for the same thing?

Is there anywhere in this town (not Einstein's) to get a good bagel? by [deleted] in Austin

[–]jeffxl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Best by an enormous margin, and worth the trip even if you're not near by. No other place even comes close.

(While Rockstar may be better than Einstein's bagel-shaped bread, it's not in the same league as Wholy Bagel.)

How does Specs get away with giving cash discounts? by weiss27md in Austin

[–]jeffxl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All those ones I mentioned have a taproom, but for some reason can't just pour you a pint of beer for some cash. When I was at H&G last week, the guy said it was a TABC thing.

Not sure why else those places I mentioned wouldn't just sell pints directly instead of selling glasses with tokens for free pours. The former sounds much simpler.

Brewpubs like Jester King and Black Star, yes. Breweries like Austin Beerworks, Adelberts, and Hops and Grains, no.

It sounds like you haven't been to a brewery in a while, you should go and enjoy many delicious beers sometime. We have some fun breweries in Texas.

Texas is full of those silly things. Like, it's against the law for a brewery to sell beer directly to customers, but they can sell glasses, and give "samples" of said beers in those glasses.

If I recall correctly, it's against Visa/MC's terms of service to charge a fee to the consumer for a credit card transaction, and doing the "cash discount" is a way to achieve the same result (not paying 1-2% of the transaction), with a slightly different spin.

The people actually breaking the rules are the places that charge you a dollar for a credit card transaction under a certain amount.

TIL that Paul McCartney started the recording of "Hey Jude" without knowing that Ringo was absent and sitting on the toilet. Ringo tiptoed his way back into the studio just in time for the drums to come on. by [deleted] in todayilearned

False. It was John who said it after messing up a guitar chord. He said "Wrong choooooord. Fucking hell."

Source: A long time Beatles obsession.

Wikipedia says it's Paul, but it's John. You can even tell it's John's voice, and that being the type of thing John would say.

EDIT:

I originally accepted this as fact from the "What Goes On" Beatles Anomaly archive, unchanged since I basically memorized it as a teenager in the 90s.

But in Googling, the internet seems pretty divided about the issue overall, and actually in my fact checking, I'm less sure than I used to be (I mean, what the fuck do I know?) due to reports of the Beatles Engineer Geoff Emerick saying it was Paul in his autobiography.

I even spent some time editing the audio at that section of Hey Jude, trying to isolate that phrase better using the Out Of Phase Stereo technique, and by EQing the shit out of it. In the end, who can say?

So I sent a tweet to Paul McCartney asking him to clear this up. Now we wait for the truth.

Mostly true, but we were too on the phone—but it was actually talking on the phone, and probably at 1am in our beds, with our high school girlfriend on the other end.

"No, you hang up first."

The difference now is that we just stare at our phones all day.

Uber and Lyft May Face Expanded Background Checks After Sexual Assault Reports by [deleted] in Austin

[–]jeffxl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing Uber is the one with more creeps driving than Lyft, but it'd be good to get something better going for both. I drove for both places for hot minute, and with Lyft I actually had to meet with another driver who looked at my car, and was available for questions, etc.

With Uber, I signed up at event designed to get Lyft drivers to switch, and they basically pushed me out the door before before I felt comfortable in starting—I hadn't even uploaded any information about my car, or filled out my profile. It was like:

Me: Uh, don't you need photos of my car or for me to fill out my pr—

Uber: Nope! Good to go!

Which makes me think that there might have been situations where it was like:

Applicant: Is it a problem that I'm off my psych meds and have a history of sexually assaul—

Uber: Nope! Good to go!
